I am glad you shared - I thought I was deserting my K drama obsession by myself because K dramas always seem to get higher ratings (esp on Viki).

I agree except that I am an overly emotional person and my sister died from leukemia making the death sting even more. Just finish crying my eyes out and hoping for a satisfying end that was rational healing from a sad event.-- however = well the reason I have started more 90% Chinese dramas and rarely 10% K dramas even though I was an avid fan. My favorite drama for so long -- well - not so favorite anymore.

One of the most tortured dramas (for me) I have watched in a while. Kept asking myself what drugs was the writer on that morning. Story all over the place but couldn't drop because I have that problem sometimes when investing too much upfront time in drama. Should have skipped to end and I would have been happier. I should have rated a 6.0 but generously gave 7.0.

Your article is so good. I started to watch this drama back in October because I was curious as to HOW BAD could a story or actress be after noticing a fellow reviewer/commenter had given it a 1.5 review. As soon as I started watching I was hooked - LINE AND SINKER. Watched as many dramas as were translated then started watching for notice of any additional ones. In the end I gave it a 9.5 rating and yes - IT IS A GEM. Very entertaining and unique because the FL is just too cute - young and immature but growing up as each new episode was aired. A drama that is highly recommended as this article clearly states in the excellent critique and review for any possible viewer.

This was a dossier of immature love maturing beyond its ultimate capacity to sustain. Long-distance, jealously, selfishness, and expectations of another party that was never satisfied leads to a good case study on how emotions and deep physical connections do not always line up to result in the same level of commitment. Just happened to find this one on YouTube while recuperating from back spasms. I have recently finished My Sweet Love and Go Ahead and it was refreshing to see them both in earlier roles. This drama is driven by the background music which is excellent. Ratings for this one are off - definitely an 8.

it appears you are not going to watch the last few episodes -I will give a quick outline for you: additional deaths (later episodes)
1, FL eldest sister and Emperor 1st wife (later Empress Dowager)
2. Emperor's younger brother (6th prince) commits suicide - lovesick [ for kite flying love interest of the Emperor - rejected by her and marries Emperor and becomes the Emperor's only love interest]. She is abused by the Political ally, Empress.
3. Emperor's 2nd child - baby dies - Emperor was attempting to
name this child Crown Prince -- before 3 months of age.
4. Emperor's wife that he loves (childhood kite flying friend) dies - grief stricken after death of her baby.
5. Emperor Dies - smallpox
The main female lead almost dies -- but writer decided to keep her alive so at the end she would be responsible for raising the 1st born surviving blood child of the emperor. This is the best I can do without writing an essay. I actually enjoyed the drama although I lowered the rating because in the end I could not understand the need to make the FL an "idiot" and a "conniving woman".

Major SPOILERS WARNING . You missed a whole lot of the story. After ML died -- the emperor basically ruled alone. There were 2 Empress Dowagers. The oldest sister died leaving the FL. Then the young emperor was forced t marry a woman (political allegiance) he didn't love -- plus he was given two Princess Consorts. He never slept with the new Empress. But apparently, with one of the consorts (1st child boy), The story continues with the woman that he truly loves -- this is why you should watch. The mayhem of death and sadness continues throughout to the end. You should watch -- just put on 2x speed and you will get the gist of the amount of "tragedy" that follows.

I watched Viki (not finished translating); Drama Cool and FAst Drama - completely translated.

Cried a river. Just finished yesterday so I didn't have a chance to read your post before then. I am glad you are warning viewers that like good or satisfying endings. The writer didn't leave an ounce of joy in our hearts.

I just finished this drama. It is a sad one. It really is good until about ep. 50 when they decide to try to tell a second story -- paralleling the hardships of the first 50 episodes or so. It is good -- worth watching. I am easily drawn into the lives of the characters so I cried - a lot. If you are trying to watch only for Cheng Yi -- He nailed his role.

I am binge watching him...and several cast members.. in The Promise of Chang'an. I have already planned to track the works of Yuan Bunyan. Too many dramas... not enough time to enjoy them all. You stay safe and well.

No disrespect to her acting. I watched it twice. Second time with hubby. . My consistent comment was her tremendous acting skills and the emotional transitions that had to be extremely stressful as an actress. Innocence to badass in one scene. The Sifeng comment should not be misunderstood. Rewatch and note how many times she screams. "Sifeng". Noticed it more the second time watching.

Sifeng!! Sifeng!!! I wanted to rename this drama Sifeng. Good story and the graphics = over the top good. Loved it and a MUST WATCH.

A drama that teaches viewers - you need to learn to use your time wisely. This is my drama confession yes I am guilty. At first interesting - the first couple of songs. Then it became annoying with people breaking into songs at any minute during the drama (no problem FF). When you look back at this drama you realize that this is a 10 episode story (at most )viewing experience that is being dragged out every week. 9 more to go -- skimming most episodes while I watch other things at the same time to try to figure out when and how the screenwriter is going to (drum roll) -- WELL we all knew the answer from EPISODE ONE.

I started watching because someone wrote a review with a 1.5 rating early in the series. My question - how bad could a drama actually be - so out of curiosity started to watch. From beginning to end this was the most enjoyable romantic story with excellent acting and story progression. The FL was cute and the ML was handsome and steady in his responses when you are learning to love vs living in logic. I gave it a 9.5 and from all the positive reviews and comments from the end - well I'm still trying to guess WHY? Definite WATCH!!!

Just want to agree with you 100%. It was a very enjoyable drama and the relationships were more realistic than many of these "young adult/teenage dramas" The actors were mature and their responses were mature. The story line progressed at a even pace and the ending - yes perfect. You wrote a good assessment and thank God - not all Chinese men are "sexless" as is currently being portrayed in many of these dramas.

I agreed 100% with you on this debacle of a romantic drama. Had a promising beginning but lost its way fast and never found direction or purpose. Thanks for your honesty. Usually only binge watch. Made a mistake on this one... Couldn't drop because hubby was watching with me..he got so tired of me complaining about all the dragging dialogue and lack of communication he asked me to just shut up ..it will be over soon (smile).

I am glad you "outed" this drama. It was pure torture trying to get to the end. I love classical music and thought I was going to get another "Secret Love Affair" type vibe with quality music and some passion. I wrote earlier - this was the "ice cube" of all romance dramas I have seen in a long time. No chemistry --- PERIOD.

Decrescendo... a drama that started strong and fell off a cliff. Except for enjoying the OST's which were over the top good. I don't know how many times you can say I'm sorry. I am not going to write a spoiler - I like warm-blooded romances and this was ice cold.
