only finished 7 today but this has been one of the best dramas I have watched in a long while. The storytelling is not draggy, is not a trope, and is award-winning. The level of emotional commitment the writer has lured me into is unbelievable. I care about every character and every scene. This has been a long time coming after tons of fluffy-filled dramas. Need more tissues if I am going to continue.

No - and not because of the actors by no means.

We were deceived and cheated on this one. On to the next adventure - I guess we win some and lose some.

The reviews posted are truly a summary of this drama. Four extremely good actors/actresses and one lazy incompetent screenwriter. It starts as a tremendously interesting story and ends with you saying "why did I invest my time in this dribble of a story?" The tears were all the people watching near the end - not IN HEAVEN upset they spent time watching 41 episodes of this tiring story. I was truly disappointed in the way the story ended and the poor writing near the end -- too long and felt wasted time near the end.

Wanted to write the same comment. This drama stood out because of the reasons you listed -and the acting and casting was perfect for this drama. The motivational speech should be a permanent trailer for everyone starting a new career or trying to achieve something that may be a challenge.

What a journey and I agree with you 100% it was adorable. I am a binge-watcher and every minute was engaging and enjoyable. The FL and ML and the supporting couples were perfect. Just watching the writer's skill as defining each character, interjecting parents, then allowing them to fall in love and grow and mature was priceless. Would have totally missed out on this one except for several comments on website Reddit recommending this drama.

Not good at explaining but my husband told me the initial scenes provide the clue of why they did not die. No power transfer. I copied this from a recaps and summary site I was using. Episode starts with Si Teng and Qin Fang watching the fountain at night. She snaps her fingers to make Qin Fang fall asleep. (In the other ending, Qin Fang is the one who makes her fall asleep). Just finished today and have to admit this is one of the best all-around Chinese dramas I have watched. The quality of writing, production, cinematography, musical interludes, OST and actors were just the best. A drama that you must pay attention to in all details for every episode. Definitely a keeper and a must-watch. Episode 31 was an alternative ending and it was well done and pleasingly more appropriate as an ending.

Great ballad and with English subs. You made me cry again today (just finished Youth of May). I guess it is going to be that kind of day. Will listen again and again it is that good.

Loved this article so much. It thoroughly defines what "character development" is and should be and why through the Long Ballad the drama continued to be watchable and enjoyable because of one strong character that is not a "lead" but a "supporting actor". I truly fell in "hate/love" with him and he added so much to the intrigue of the drama. The writer was truly on point with this character and I am so in love with him that fter the drama ended I have started searching for some of his musical talents -- right now - addicted to the theme song for Rattan sung by him. His career will grow because of his stellar performance and right now -- I can't stop calling him Hao Du when referring to him. Very good and entertaining rom-com for all 36 episodes. Not a wasted moment in story development or editing. Even though the FL voice was grating my soul at times her childish way of speaking actually balanced the immaturity of the ML. The bromance was amazing. The second leads were exceptional and the integration of parents into the story line even made this one of the best I have viewed. What was really an ancillary bonus for this drama - you could watch it continually while episodes were being released -- today we were rewarded with 6 episodes to finish the drama. I truly believe anyone watching will enjoy this drama and it takes you into the world of book editing and promotions. A solid 9.5.

In the middle of episode 29. I am "all in". I can't stop laughing out loud. This is an exceptionally well-written and acted rom-com and a must-watch. Even though the FL voice sometimes grinds my soul when she speaks the story definitely is good and worth every minute. Started binge-watching and can't stop.

What a thought-provoking article !!!! It really made me ponder your conclusion in your first sentence. I have been a K drama addict since 2014. As I read your article I pondered why I had a love/hate relationship with the drama Vincenzo. I loved it because it was different and Song Joong Ki gave off that debonair Tom Cruise vibe throughout the drama. I loved his acting and each week I was amazed at how he immersed himself into the role of a serious mafia member. This in itself would cause many viewers to search out other K dramas if never exposed to this genre of dramas before. However, as a veteran viewer of K dramas, I hated parts of the drama when - writers began to introduce silly unnecessary "comedy". The balance was awkward sometimes and distracted from the storyline. When you are sitting in front of your screen yelling WHY DON'T YOU JUST SHOOT HIS A--? you know you have fallen into the K-drama trap of prolonging the life of characters just to stretch the length of the drama without hiring extras or other supporting actors to strengthen the drama. You start waiting for amnesia and a white truck of doom. I hope in the future K drama writers take into account what viewers enjoyed about dramas and what they dislike. I really loved the thoughtful analysis and only hope that Vincenzo does help more international fans enjoy Korean dramas. Before Vincenzo, there is a huge body of quality Kdramas that are just as deserving of exposure. Netflix - has opened the door for so many international viewers to experience K dramas. It is time that a library of work is added for continued exposure to quality K dramas to strengthen the growth of international viewers.

This was an excellent thesis of C dramas to watch (many of them I have watched) and you have named many I need to add to my must-see list. Since most of the dramas you have listed are recent productions they are easily accessible for viewing. This is an A+ effort. Thanks.

I truly can't answer. I'm a binge watcher so average or dull dramas go "in and out of my mind". This one ... no memory (I am a senior..short term memory lost) sorry can't help.
