Loved the rich use of literary elements, especially the juxtapositions between the rich and the poor through a window.

Loved this movie as it is very different than the martial arts movies from Hong Kong that I have recently watched. It is more like the dramas now where the women were fighting for their right to be women and equal to men. This is different because in the other Hong Kong movies the women knowing martial arts is just a given. No one bats an eye at it. So it was strange to watch a movie that portrayed women as weird knowing martial arts. Now, in the end the way the woman won was by just being herself.

While I agree with your analysis of the drama, there is far more going on in it than you are letting on. If Sang…
You are the second commenter that I have chatted with who has read The End of Eternity. The End of Eternity does not give a right or wrong way of doing something when it comes to the use of nuclear energy. It simply allows nature to take its course after Noys and Harlan send a letter to the person who discovers nuclear energy and Eternity is destroyed.

The same goes for Hidden Love. The drama does not come right out and say that the age of consent law is wrong (that would be foolish), nor does it say this is the right way to handle age gaps, especially when a person is 14 or 17. It simply gives reasons why the pairings of 14/19 and 17/22 should be thoroughly thought about before jumping into a full blown relationship which could include sex as the person would be of age. If the writer had followed the novel Hidden Love, Sang Zhi would have been 13 when the two first met. She would have been a minor in every sense of Chinese law. The fact that they changed her age to 14 allows the writers to examine the age of consent law without judgement of it being right or wrong or that this is the right way to do something. Let nature take its course.

As for the period scene phone call, you have fully supported what I was saying through your explanation. DJX is literally not her brother. By him saying, "I am not her brother," it allows the possibility of him being her boyfriend. If he had gone ahead and bought the pads and clothes for her without Sang Yan, it would have solidified that DJX indeed only thinks of Sang Zhi as a sister. Sang Yan has already given him permission to be her brother, not her boyfriend. That identity has been shut down for the time being. The fact that he doesn't buy the pads without Sang Yan shows that he is establishing a different identity to her. Your conclusion isn't wrong, it is the perception a viewer has after that that allows for DJX to either be her boyfriend or brother. Again, it depends on how comfortable the viewer is with 17/22 year olds hanging out together.

Thanks for the discussion.

What is an action film? It is not this even though it has the ear-markings of one with car chases, shoot-outs, etc. What a waste of HHJ's, JJW, and CSW's talents.

Of the two, this movie is the strongest. This was definitely modeled on the Hollywood film The Usual Suspects which is a masterpiece.

You're right in drama world more and more stories are coming out about strong, intelligent, rebellious women. Women who want to forge their own path and make their own decisions. Some of them know martial arts and some do not. This shows that the Chinese people are slowly changing their perceptions of women, even though throughout history, there have been powerful, intelligent women leaders.

So is this drama a profound drama when it is much like other dramas? In my opinion, no. Even I didn't really understand why it was called Rebel Princess because I watch only dramas that have strong, intelligent female leads. However, when looking at the drama through a historical lens, I can see why she is called the Rebel Princess.

Thanks again for your insight and discussion.

Thank you for your insight. I understand where you are coming from and your definition of rebellious. What does it mean to be rebellious? It means to fight against something. Yes, the most apparent form of rebellion was her entering the political arena as a woman. Every woman during that time period had to follow the will of the males in her life father, brother, grandfather, etc. She, on the other hand, fought against all of them. She forged her own path with the help of a very understanding husband.

Let's analyze the conception idea. Remember that after her miscarriage the doctor said she would die if she were to have a child. Without talking to her, her husband fed her conception medicine to stop her from getting pregnant. He thought he was doing what was best for her and her destiny was not to have children. He loved her anyway. Her nanny found out and stopped it. When the princess found out, she couldn't accept this fate and sought out ways to change her fate. She ended up going through a series of acupuncture treatments in order to become pregnant and not die in the process. She rebelled against fate and her husband's short sighted decision. She took matters into her own hands. In the end, the husband supported her decision. It was her maternal instincts that told her to fight against this fate.

Hope this helps and thank you for the discussion.

Finally watched this movie after watching Fist of Legend. It is interesting how the title is called Fist of Fury. It should be called Fist of Death. However, I did enjoy the action sequences and the plot. I can say they really lightened up the Chen character for Fist of Legend.

Not really, he does have two male friends that he is close to. This is a straight up revenge drama.

Loved this movie. Most Hong Kong films are very choppy, but this was not. Also, I loved that it was based on actual people as I feel most Hong Kong films lose their plot pretty quickly. This film had it all a strong plot, strong fight scenes and romance. Hats off to the cast and crew.

Despite the choppiness of the editing and total lack of plot, I loved how the women protected the men with their martial art skills. Additionally, I love how no one cares that the women are strong instead of meek and timid. Thank you!

I actually thought the graphic sex scene weren’t necessary or at least the graphic-ness didn’t add to the…
Even in the movie she is above the age of consent. Until 2020, South Korea's age of consent was 13 without restrictions. Which means at 13 she could have sex with anyone 13 and above. In 2020 it was changed to 16 with restrictions in order to protect younger teenagers from people older than 18. That is if the internet is right, but I do know that at the time of the movie 13 without restrictions was the law.

Yes, this was a beautiful movie. I first watched Kim Go Eun in Goblin or Guardian of the Lonely God. I found her acting okay. Here she does her job, but I wouldn't say that it is outstanding even though it did catapult her to stardom.

Recently, I have been watching more movies than dramas. I finished In the Name of Blossom (season 2 of Flourished Peony) and was greatly disappointed. So much so that it has been hard for me to watch anything else. Some great movies though that I have watched have The Night Owl, Masquerade, Homme Fatale, and The Magician. None of these have nudity in them.

Good to hear from you!

Title A Muse Spoiler
A beautiful movie about a high school girl (who is the age of consent) and two men, one is 70 and the other around late 20s or early 30s. The old man is in need of inspiration for his writing. To be clear even though there is sexual content with both men, each are portrayed in very different ways. The old man fantasizes about her and then writes an award winning story about this fantasy. He never actually has sex with her or even touches her in that way. He is not a pedophile as she is of the age of consent. There is nothing perverted about the old man's fantasy. When people get old, does their sex drive or wanting to feel love disappear, no. We all want to be loved and cherished at any age. Also, the older man knew the girl did not like him in that way.

The young man, however, is a different story. Both have sex because they are lonely and are trying to fill a void in their lives. Only to find that they feel even more empty afterwards as it is just sex. Her in particular as she wants to feel like the girl in the story that the young man supposedly wrote about her. In the end, she realizes it was the old man who wrote the story, and she thanks him for making her feel beautiful.

Hey, how are you? I know it has been awhile since you watched this, I just finished it today. Actually, those sex scenes were very needed as they illustrated the difference of how both men treated her. The older man treated her like a woman (a human being) and made her feel beautiful with just his writing. She was a beautiful muse. He never violated her or made her feel bad about herself which is what she needed. The other sex scene was just the opposite. It was two lonely people using each other to feel something and ending up feeling more empty than before. It is how she knew that the young man was not the one who wrote the story as he could not make her feel like the man in the story. It is also why the old man tried to kill the younger man as the younger man had taken something beautiful and made it ugly.

Hope all is well with you!

Title Hidden Love Spoiler
While I agree with your analysis of the drama, there is far more going on in it than you are letting on. If Sang…
Again, your analysis is correct for as far as it goes and your perception of DJX and Sang Zhi's relationship, but, like many viewers, you have failed to notice an important detail shown multiple times in the first few episodes, the novel The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov. This drama is based on (not adapted from) the novel Hidden Love. Based on means that the writers have used the source material for a certain purpose and not just for entertainment value (which it can be as well). In a nutshell, The End of Eternity is a social commentary about the use of nuclear energy. It does not come right and say that nuclear energy is bad or good, it is a cautionary tale.

The same goes for this drama. The writers do not come right out and say that the age of consent law is bad or good (that would be foolish on their part), they just explain that a 14 year old Sang Zhi is still a child and not ready for that kind of relationship (hence the actress who played 14 year old Sang Zhi was actually 11). Also, again at 17, even though she has caught up to him in height, she is still not equal to him in maturity. Sang Zhi says while she is reading The End of Eternity, "I know the words, but I don't understand them". The people of China are trying to get the age of consent changed, but with no luck. If you can't change a law, change the mindset of the people about the law. If this were a drama set even 100 year ago would we be having this conversation, no, as 14/15 year olds were married off for family social standing all the time. Our definition and idea of childhood has changed throughout the last 100 years, so should the law. You're right Sang Zhi doesn't have to deal with that because DJX is a green flag male, but not every male is like DJX. This is a cautionary tale.

You may look at this drama as an entertaining, simple, fluffy love story. However, once you have read The End of Eternity, you come to understand that there is much more to the story.

As for perception, this drama is driven by perception for the audience as well as the characters. The audience, Sang Zhi, and Sang Yan perceive DJX as a brother to Sang Zhi from the time she 14 to when she is 19 when DJX confesses everything to SZ and SY. DJX perceives that Sang Zhi thinks of him as a brother. Yet, we know that she has other thoughts as well. You have missed the most important part of the period scene when DJX calls Sang Yan and says in no uncertain terms, "I am not her brother." He is using distancing language and stating very clearly that he thinks of her in a different way. It is the audience's perception that allows us to think of him as a brother to when she is 19 and ready for a relationship. Up to that point it is how comfortable people are with the age gap and the age of Sang Zhi.

Thank you for your insight and discussion. Happy drama watching.
