Thx for the friends request!
I see you dropped Woman! I was planning to watch it because of Oguri Shun who I kinda sorta fell in love with in Rich Man, Poor Woman. Why did you drop it? Wasn't it any good?

Are you watching anything else interesting?

Nameless Gangster made me discover Ha Jeong Woo & I mainly enjoyed the movie because of his contribution. There's just something about that man's eyes & facial expressions that are so intense...

I'm a Choi Min-sik fan too. He was wicked in I Saw The Devil alongside the lovely & fantastic Mr. Lee Byung-hun. As for Old Boy I mainly enjoyed it for Park Chang-woo's direction. Absolutely exquisite & by far the masterpiece of his career so far IMO. The story was wild & out there, but I loved it because of Choi & Yoo Ji-Tæ, another ahjussi I go goo-gaa-gaa over! LOL

I will add A Better Tomorrow to my weekend watch list. I'm also going to check out The Hotel Venus, recommended to me by someone who has an unique view on the technicalities of filmmaking. Have you seen it?.

I can't remember my life before drama! haha I know a fair share of work has been sidelined due my addiction! :-)

When you say the h is married, would that be in the drama or real life you mean?

I see IkPien has now joined our Lovers fan club! Haha. The more the merrier! :-)

What are some of your favourite genres and the movies/dramas which best present them?

Haven't watched Lovers in Paris, but I've been eyeing it. The reviews are a little off putting so I've been wavering whether I should watch it or not.

I'm extremely disappointed to learn that Lee Seo-jin is more interested in being a businessman (he's a NYU alum) than an actor these days! He doesn't have much credits ... omo, I need to see those dimples and hot bod again!

I see from your convo with Winnie that you're watching Shark. How is it? Is it anything like Lovers in the slightest? Are there any good kisses & romance? I really liked Kim Nam Gil as Tæ San in Lovers and wouldn't mind seeing more of him. Unfortunately nothing he's been in, other than Lovers, interests me...

Didn't I tell you? Sex on legs. S.E.X on LEGS!!!
Dimples, muscular chest, six pack, nice face, nice butt ... full 100. Dayum ... I didn't know they make them like that in Korea!!!

I'm telling you, you're gonna be lusting after this man like crazy right along with Mi Joo! Hahaha

I don't know how you manage to NOT marathon. You certainly have more discipline than me. Even though I couldn't afford the time I could NOT tear myself away from the screen.

Re finding the perfect drama, your guess is as good as mine, dongsæng.

I think you have to have a clear understanding of what you like and be vigilant in weeding out those dramas that don't meet your criteria. After about 8-9 mths in dramaland I'm starting to get a hang of what works and what doesn't for me. The rest is simply trial & error.

I read the reviews, get advice from friends, esp those who know my tastes well, and hope for the best when picking my next drama to watch.

So you're dropping your Tragedy month challenge, huh? Asian tragedies are real tragedies that can really sink your mood into the dumps. They're not like Western tragedies that leave you with a glimmer of hope. No, they completely gut you, like how you gut a fish. I saw a number of them, unawares, in the beginning of my Asian cinema watching career. I now avoid them like the plague. LOL

Yes, I have a movie in mind that I'd like to recommend since you have an above average interest in not only the entertainment value of movies, but also dramaturgy & the technicalities of moviemaking.

But first I need to know how old you are. Please tell me and be honest!

There's a good reason I'm asking, promise! :-)

Oh you're so lucky! Working from home AND having a BF who supports your addiction. lol

My BF thinks he isn't into Asian cinema, LOL. But everytime I force him to watch something with me he ends up enjoying himself. He won't take the initiative to watch anything on his own, tho.

I'm glad you liked A Dirty Carnival. Going in I immediately got the vibe that this was going to be a cautionary tale about the gangster lifestyle so for me the movie sets the stage for the ending ... from the beginning, but enticed you enough with great acting & setting to make you want to go along for the ride.

A Dirty Carnival was the 2nd Korean gangster film I saw & having been brought up on Western gangster flicks where most things tend to work out for our anti-hero, ADC was a new experience. I must admit I was half-hoping for a different outcome, romantic that I am! LOL

How about Nameless Gangster?

Oh dear where do I begin...

When Kang Jæ came to Yu Jin's place to propose. Mi Joo dropping the roasted almonds when she heard the proposal ... sooo symbolic of their unconsummated passion. My most fav scene! :)

Although I felt a little bad for Yu Jin I also loved the scene when Kang Jæ was waiting up for Mi Joo & how he jumped up off the couch when he heard her door slam. Such a small action but it spoke volumes of just how hard he's falling for her.

The roof scene when all they can do to acknowledge their feelings for each other is hold hands. The desperation, the longing ... mad!

Loved when he was telling Sang Taek hyung about his feelings for Mi Joo, that he tried to convince himself to go to Yu Jin, go to Yu Jin ... but he can't bring himself to do it. So poignant & shows the depth of his feelings for her!

Loved every second of this show. Need to find others like it.

Technically I've only seen Lovers once, but I backed up so many times during this initial viewing that I feel like I've seen it at least 3 individual times. All I did every time I rewind was ogle Lee Seo Jin! lol
OMG, when they were Hainan Island & he took off his jacket and gave it to Mi Joo. I'm a chest girl! I love broad muscular chests & he certainly had that. And then those dimples! :-)
Omo, omo, omo!
I love the show, I LOOOOVE the show! haha
How long ago did you watch it and what were your favourite scenes?

Hi Raincat, I remember sometime ago when I first joined MDL you rec'ed The Hotel Venus to me. I haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but I will this weekend when I get back home from vacation! It seems very intriguing.

Was it (The Hotel Venus) the movie you thought of after I rec'ed The Act of Killing or another one?

Hi! Just happened across your comment on Winnie's profile about Lovers and I couldn't agree with you more. The leads ARE quite different, but somehow they balance each other out quite well. Moreover, Lee Seo Jin and his dimples and his chest! OMG! :-)
Nice to meet another Lovers fan! I absolutely love this show. I watched it about a week ago & my mind is still blown! LOL

LOL, easier said than done. Junkies are the same whatever their fix. Once you get hooked there's no turning back. But having said that, I'm enjoying my holiday. Yesterday and today we spent an amazing time on the water on our friend's boat. The weather was/is hot & it's wonderfully refreshing going for a dip in the ocean right off the boat. Haven't done that in long time. We set sail for home on Wednesday, but I'm already suffering from drama withdrawal. Good thing is by the time we get home Thursday the final eps of Cruel City will have aired. I'm hoping for a good ending.

Awesome! I hope you like A Dirty Carnival. Be sure to let me know.

And oh yes, Kang Jæ will always be a bad boy, only about 90% reformed lol.

I've heard a lot about Running Man and how good it is. I've also watched a couple of clips on Youtube but I try not to get too caught up because I have too many things demanding my time. But in case I do want to check out an episode or two where do you watch them? Are they uploaded to a website somewhere? I've only seen clips, not full eps, on youtube.

I just checked your list and wow, you've seen a lot! I'm pleased to see that we rated a lot of movies & shows the same way! :)

Yes, indeed we do! :)

The ending was definitely rushed. This should have been a 21 ep show and for once it would justified! LOL

Anyway, we're gonna have to live with what we got. Most important thing is that it ended well & they're finally happy.

In my mind, they're married now & living happily. Mi Joo is pregnant with Kang Jæ's son & he dotes on her. He buys her all the crab she craves & gives her foot massages. She in turn showers him with love & lots of sex. hehe

He's no longer a loan shark. He's working his way up into the company his father left him. They'll grow old together. Kang Jæ will die first, then Mi Joo a couple years later bcuz she can't stand to live without him! :)

I'm such a romantic fool ... LOL

Re your question about variety shows. No, I haven't gotten into them yet. Not sure if I should given that I'm already addicted to drama and movies! What's WGW?

Omo, we're sooo alike in our preferences for things it's uncanny!

I too don't have the patience to watch airing dramas. I really don't know how some people do it! The only reason I watched the first 2 eps was because someone rec'ed it to me & I didn't realize it was an airing drama. I parked it once I did because I had a feeling just by watching those 2 eps it's gonna be a drama to marathon.

It's also about the Korean underworld & the male lead is tear his clothes off HOT! I saw some amazing characters & awesome fight scenes. Best of all there's seems to be a romance there as well, between 2 police officers on the same squad! My hope is that the romance & the crime will be evenly balanced throughout the show just like in Lovers!

Monday & Tuesday, when the last 2 eps air, can't come soon enough! :)

Please watch A Dirty Carnival asap! I can't wait to hear what you think!

It seems to work. The only problem is that the screen is cropped just like on gooddrama! :(

I'm going to see if I can try to download it somewhere. If not I'll just watch it as it is on viki. Thank you so much!

Now that I think more about it you have a point! Especially given the fact that he thought him pushing her away was the best thing he can do for her, the only way he could protect her. You're right.

It IS nitpicking, but it's FUN discussing it with you! :-)

I just wish he had at least accepted the gifts she prepared for him. Especially the audio of the book she read to him ... it was such a romantic gesture!

Oh, I could go on all night about this show! LOL But I will spare you! hehe

We're in the same boat though. It's been 4 days since I saw the show & I can't stop thinking about it. It's nice to have someone who feels the same way to talk to about it! I definitely want to watch more gangster shows like this too! But where to find them??? Do they even exist? If you do find anything do let me know!!!

Cruel City is the only show that may be slightly similar, but I can't be 100% sure since I've only seen 2 eps. I'm going to resume that one soon. Are you watching it?

By the way, have you seen the movie A Dirty Carnival with Jo In-Sung? If you haven't watch it, watch it, watch it! :-)

Man, I love Mi Joo! She's a practical woman & she's smart. I'm sure she would have preferred to marry someone of Sæ Yoen's calibre, but once she fell in love with Kang Jæ she didn't care that he was a gangster. Like you said, nothing like these moralistic, goody two shoes heroines. I'd die a happy woman if I never seen one of them again!

Re: that scene with Sang Tæk hyung ... yes! Indeed it did. It showed that it wasn't just lust. But a type of deep love he's never felt before, not even with Yu Jin. Loved it!

As for Seo Yeon, tell me about it! I ended up really liking his character because he remained the bigger man when he could have easily turned into a right villain. His mother is a real piece of work, but I'm glad he didn't hold a grudge against her. She may not be the most likeable woman, but I can grudgingly accept that her heart was in the right place.
