Long post ahead... You are not wrong TMoPBs has garnered over 60 billion views and YM benefited a lot from it. But I think (and many people that know will agree) she has gained more from other roles and there were smaller ones that were less popular and more impactful like strange tales of Liao Zhai (2005), beauty's rival in the palace, Detective Di Ren jie and Beijing love story (2012) In terms popularity older dramas were not measured in terms of views. For example we don't know how many views Chinese Paladin 3 (2009) and Palace (2011) garnered but they still have high topicality today in terms of OSTs, characters, cosplay, CP ships, etc. YM encountered a temporary setback bcos she fell out with her boss at the time after Chinese Paladin so Palace is the drama that got YM really popular. It's not my cup of tea but people thought YM's charismatic and bubbly acting was very fresh. Over 14 million people liked it enough to vote her most popular actress (1 text 1 vote). After that she jumped from 92 to 13 on Forbes (https://www.jaynestars.com/news/2012-forbes-china-celebrity-100-list-jay-chou-in-1-spot/#:~:text=In%202011%2C%20Yang%20Mi%20(%E6%9D%A8%E5%B9%82,headlines%20on%20a%20daily%20basis.) and started mixing in different circles. The high profile endorsements and magazines started pouring in and her topicality was very high. Then in the new era Swords of legend was the first drama to hit 10 billion views. You see before getting entangled with her former studio's nonsense she had no issues playing more varied roles. Even after she got famous she was willing play supporting roles as far as she liked the role. Then later there were a lot of fast food movies and dramas to meet the financial goals of her former studio a lot of good roles were rejected on her behalf (reportedly) but YM insisted on taking TMoPBs. Even then they put their own spin on the whole thing thankfully it didn't affect it's success. So in summary I think there were some really good acting details in TMoPBs especially as SuSu. YM made that character her own however I think it's sad people think it's the single best thing out of YM.

Unrelated but TMoPB is popular on an international scale however it's not Yang Mi's representative work. It wouldn't have been as successful if she wasn't already popular (Not that the rest of the cast didn't contribute). There have been far better roles though not accessible.

This isn't a childhood memory for me, I saw it three years ago and it has become one of my faves. There's a lot of scheming and competition but if you're looking for a "story of yanxi palace" kind of thing this is not it, it's more on the slicy side. It has that classic feel and there's a lot of character development. You should see the first 5 or 8 episodes to decide though.
