Quick question, do I need to watch Season 1 before watching this? Or can this be watched as a standalone??
It can be watched as a standalone. There is a short recap of important season 1 details in the first 20-30 minutes of episode 1.

If there's anybody who was interested but unable to watch all the behind-the-scenes and making videos for TOTNT 1938 due to regional restrictions, I have all of the videos (raw and unsubbed, sorry! There's sub files for the YT videos only) available in a gdrive folder. PM me if you want the link.

should I watch the first season before this one to understand the plot?
Yes and no. The answer is yes if you want to be more invested in the character stories of Yeon, Rang, Shin Ju, and Yu Ri (Shin Ju's wife, who doesn't actually appear in S2 but has an unexplained human doppelgänger instead). No if you are only concerned with following the plot, because episode 1 of S2 gives a decent short recap of the important points you absolutely need to know.

how's the final boss fight? better than S1, same or even worse than that?
In my opinion S2 fight was better. It felt more epic and action-packed. Yeon actually went full nine-tailed fox-mode and killed his enemy, while Blue Moon played in the background.

The final fight with Imoogi in S1 was super underwhelming. Imoogi just kinda teleported around, Yeon kept having to pull his punches because Jia went there like an idiot and put herself in harm's way. Waaaaay too much talking going on in that fight scene, too. Imoogi just stands while the main couple have a tearful conversation. Then it ends basically in a grappling match with Yeon and Imoogi hugging it out so Rang could stab them both. Imoogi was such a boring and poorly written villain.

wait a minute, what happens with the original mountain god? did I miss something?
Presumably he'll be the main villain of Season 3 (if it happens). They were setting up season 3, in the hopes of a renewal.

He needed to switch bodies first see how he was waiting for the perfect time to step in when Nyudo wanted to take…
I think they wrote that particular power really inconsistently - in season 1 it seemed to take no effort, while in season 2 it seemed to be more of an effort to summon it.

Well judging by how this season flopped badly, it won't be a surprise . The only bright spot is the mermaid lady…
Honestly, whatever dude. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I wasn't saying any of this out of any spite for Jo Bo Ah, I was just happy thinking that there may be a shot at TVN green lighting season 3. I personally enjoyed season 2 more than season 1, because I got everything that I hoped for. If you didn't like it, then ok, great. If you like Jo Bo Ah, that's great.

Actually S2 aired on weekend slot which already gives them higher reach whereas s1 aired on Wed-thurs slot where…
Hm, I'd forgotten that season 1 aired during the week instead of the weekend slot. Still, I'll hope for the best.

Did Rang go to the future with him ??
No, he stayed in 1938 with Yeo Hee, but he did give a beautiful tearful farewell to his brother, assuring him that he would be okay. He also takes charge of 1938!Yeon’s recovery from opium addiction.

Season 2 ratings were better than all season 1 ratings overall. The highest rating season 1 ever got was 5.8%, while the highest season 2 had was 7.1%. Seven out of the 12 episodes this season exceeded the highest rating that season 1 ever had, and even the lowest rated episode was rated higher than season 1's lowest rated episode. Fingers crossed that this is enough to get TVN to green light another season!

Edit: rating for the finale just released. It got an 8% rating, highest of all episodes!

I need your second and fourth points addressed in season 3 if we get it.

Wow I was so happy for this ending, and then thinking there were more adventures for S3 and kim Beum posted on…
Season 3 is not confirmed, but depending on how well season 2 did, it may happen. I'll cross my fingers that it gets a green light, and that Kim Bum is asked to return to reprise his role one more time. If not, I'm honestly satisfied with what we got in this season. Everything that upset me about season 1 got fixed in this one.

I KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP WHEN I SAW THE CHANGE IN RANG’S EYES IN THE INTRO. THE SUBTLE DETAILS DAMN.
Lol, i've seen people complain that it was laziness, that they got his eye on the wrong side, but it was actually foreshadowing!
On Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 Jun 11, 2023
Wow, the finale was so good. I am still in happy disbelief that everybody actually lived to the end! A little sad we didn't get a little more with Rang and Yeo Hee at the end, but I'm just relieved and happy she survived, tbh.

The only thing I wish they'd shown is whether changing the past with Rang and Yeon reforming their relationship, Rang becoming a full gumiho, and Rang having a wife, if all of those things affected his future at all. If there's a season 3, can we get a season 1 do-over where everything is different somehow?
On Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 Jun 11, 2023
I went into this episode fully expecting Yeo Hee to die, so I was pleasantly surprised that she didn't. They have one more episode left to let me down, but I'm tentatively hoping they might just actually pull it off.

I loved that Rang finally voiced his hurt that he feels that Yeon will never choose him first over Ji Ah, and Yeon finally saying "I won't leave you alone" when Rang asks him to stay and help him fight. That was some much needed emotional therapy for me right there.

I know Yeon makes it back to Ji Ah because of the photos TVN posted, but I don't give a damn. Everything I care about is in 1938, unless they actually show that the future has changed for Rang.
On Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 Jun 11, 2023
Yeon calling out Taluipa on her shit, finally. Funny that he should be the voice of reason with her this season when he was the one being unreasonable last season, while she was spouting straight facts –specifically when he wanted to have three extra days to catch Imoogi, despite Taluipa warning him (correctly) that Imoogi would kill thousands of people in that time. Other than that one time, Taluipa's full of shit, lol.

I had to watch this one at least once, just to know what all the hype was about. My conclusion is its one of those dramas that is difficult to dislike because it is so ridiculous, illogical, and over the top silly, but all the characters take it seriously, so you can't help but laugh about it and enjoy it. Like every time Joon Pyo watches Ji Hu and Jan Di "secretly", in his extremely conspicuous, apple-red sports car.
Truly, the best couple is Yi Jeong and Ga Eul. Their relationship was far more healthy than Jan Di and Joon Pyo's.
