It was a moment of impulse which was caused by built up frustration and jealousy that Zhang Mo can be free while…
He killed the husband (the guy Xie Huai'an was impersonating at the time), who told him about that guy harassing his wife (he had to kill him or else Xie Huai'an's cover would have been blown). It was in a way to repay him for killing him. I know, really messed up stuff goes on in this show. All of them need serious mental help.
I have a clarifying question that I still can’t quite understand. Why did XWJ kill Zhang Mo? His character though…
At that point, XWJ couldn't trust XHA or Ye Zheng. He was also controlled like a caged bird under Yan Fengshan for years, so he had some built up paranoia and fear of trusting people. He had been locked up and starved by Ye Zheng prior to the face switching thing. He did not see Huai'an or Ye Zheng as friends certainly. He saw an opportunity and took it (perhaps to escape). Like others said, it was act on impulse. His reaction afterward and his subsequent guilt were well-detailed and portrayed. It doesn't negate the fact he murdered someone of course.
Also, Yan Fengshan may go down as one of the best villains/antagonists for me this year (provided of course nothing…
Yeah, these veteran actors are always some of the highlights for me in these types of dramas. I love it when the villain/antagonist is smart - a worthy adversary.

While I agree the characters are complex and not fully black and white, I still think there is a distinction between YFS and the male lead (at least for now). I think killing of Bai Wan is what did it for me.
Love the use of this line both in the beginning of the show and at the middle (beginning of 2nd half): "the…
Also, Yan Fengshan may go down as one of the best villains/antagonists for me this year (provided of course nothing crashes or burns by the end of the 28 episodes). Master manipulator, gaslighter and just a sick person all in all. He carries himself as a older man with the guise of gentility and civility, but he's still that murderous crazy man in that prison hole.
Love the use of this line both in the beginning of the show and at the middle (beginning of 2nd half): "the weather is changing" - in Chinese it also implies a shift in power (one kingdom falls and another rises). Hope it bodes well for our heroes.
That’s the latest rumor, for Bai Yao Pu. But as with any rumor, it’s all subject to official announcement,…
He’s in multiple rumors every year the past couple years haha. It’s hard to keep up. I’ve seen another one with Song Zuer and one with Meng Ziyi. Of course most of them are just fake.
This is such a binge-able show. From one tense moment to another, but well-paced with some breathing room to get to know the characters. The quiet moments and flashbacks are used quite effectively.
Finished this finally! Need a day or so to digest my thoughts. I think in brief, this script was really ambitious but ended up biting off more than it could chew. Not every storyline or arc soars and leaves truly moving impression or is allowed to delve more deeply into a topic. Trying to encapsulate decades worth of history on top of some family drama into 40 episodes proved too much, at least for me.
