Agreed. Exactly my assessment. The ML is carrying too much of a burden and she needs to understand that . And…
Yeah, I'm enjoying Deng Wei's performance. I do hope he gets better/different scripts to play with in the future because I'm not that into xianxia anymore. But I've tended to like the scriptwriter's dramas even with all the meandering. I know it doesn't work for everyone.
Random thoughts after Ep 19: While I'm most invested in the central plot, these small side stories have been quite enjoyable to me and very much thematically related to the main story. They show SYS working along his disciples, as they and he continue to struggle (Bai Bai Shan for example) to grow and develop. While the previous mini arc showed the resentment of a mother losing her son alongside the ML's mother selling him away and then regretting it with great emotional resonance (at least for me), this arc shows a parallel between a man's love for his lover and what has been developing for 20-plus years between SYS, MQG and Su Yu.
Old man Liu was willing to kill others to save his lover. SYS in the past was willing to do similarly to gain what he thought he needed - power and strength over others, and yes, even to gain MQG by his side forever. And while I could barely tolerate SY's smug face during these past few episodes, his presence was necessary to foreshadow what is likely to come against the background of this mini-story.
I think it will come - it is on the slower side agreed but arguably, the group has been busy with dealing with…
I disagree, until he can actually talk to her honestly, he hasnāt had the ability to move on. Some people can, but someone like him needs more time - and he desperately needs a therapist lol
Ep 20: SYS and XRR watch an entire saga about obsessive love and not letting go leading to death and tragedy.…
Yeah same writer. She spares no angst, but I think in general she understands characters, their motivations and development, which I appreciate. I liked The Last Immortal that she wrote too, but I know people disliked the ML at first (and he actually did ākillā the FL in that story). As long as the hardships lead to growth and change, Iām ok with some angst.
Judging from the previews and some spoilery clips I've seen, I think we're headed in classic xianxia pain territory at some point - which is not for everyone of course.
There are other stories/dramas with the leads getting together sooner and working together as a couple. This is not one of them - at least for now. SYS in particular still has a lot of issues in himself to sort out - his past trauma, his jealousy, and ultimately figuring out what exactly he wants to be and do in life (not just everything related to MQG/XRR). XRR needs to know who she is to become wholly herself - not just someone attached to her shifu (as she is growing and getting stronger, I see more of MQG in her).
As for MRW and SY - I don't see things going well for them the way things are progressing, which is typical second lead stuff in xianxia and can be off-putting for some. Unfortunately, it is a true thing in life that some live stuck desiring something/someone they cannot have. Instead of moving forward and finding new joys and fulfillment, they resort to shenanigans to try to get what they want - inevitably losing everything including themselves.
