Lovely review. 😊
I didn't want to give anything away if possible. It's the unfolding of the relationships that's fascinating to watch. I had the same feeling about the rating. Close but not quite.
The hardest for me was the daughter-father scene near the end. Had a similar moment with my mom. 😭💔
Thank you for the flower you gave recently. 🦋💕 I haven't been on MDL as much lately. It's usually a quick run through my friends feed at night before bed.
Shout! and Prime have several Shaw Brothers films that are in the original language and have been restored. Of course, there is the dubbing with them in both languages.
Michelle Yeoh used to count to 10 and they would dub her movie in Cantonese and Mandarin afterwards. So no lip synching there either. They’d also use that technique in kung fu flicks because the dialogue may not have been written at the time of filming. 😆

These old kung fu flicks are the exception because there often isn't an alternative. I don't grade off for deteriorating conditions , cropped images, or bad dubbing because it's not the maker's fault. If I want to watch an obscure Lo Lieh or Angela Mao film, it's the price my ears have to pay.
I’ve seen movies that the dubs may suddenly go to German or another language and then back to English again. Or revert back to Mandarin or Cantonese with no subs. 😵💫 But yes, the dubs are annoying. Thankfully, they don’t try to use a “Chinese” accent but it’s also jarring when you hear a Brooklyn, Spanish, and/or American southern accent all in one film. 🤦🏻♀️ There is one team that has dubbed a lot of kung fu films that sounds like maybe two men and one woman doing all the voices in a “neutral” accent. That’s assuming there’s only one team, some movies have multiple layers of dubbing. 😆
And then there is the voice dubbing for actors who speak either Cantonese or Mandarin and are dubbed in the other. And the dubbed version is an octave higher than their real voice.
To watch these old niche films one has to accept the flawed, very flawed,
nature of their condition. 👐🏻
There are three different versions on YT. All cropped and dubbed in English.
Almost to the end of my marathon, hoping to avoid more serpent violence.
