I started watching for the mystery, but it quickly became clear this is not a mystery, it's really more a romance.…
I see. I just finished ep 12 so it has not reached that point yet. I too am enjoying the kissing scenes and romance between the main leads a lot. I have never seen any C drama with so many kissing scenes before. Honestly, C drama needs more hot scenes. Even if this story goes downhill midway, I guess we can forgive it as long as it makes up for it in the romance department. :D
I like detective dramas so I don’t know why I put this off for so long. I guess it is partly because I am at the moment tired of dramas with cross dressing FLs. Also, I am not familiar with any of the actors so I was not too keen to watch it. It wasn’t until I came across a poster on Instagram that I decided to watch it. I like that both FL and ML have good chemistry and their acting is on point. The rest of the cast are talented and relatable too. Story wise I’d say it is not the most original. Under the Power and Sherlock Holmes often come to mind and I just got started. I intend to finish it as the drama is not that long. Hopefully it will not drag half way through. Fingers crossed.
I had some expectations after seeing Pete Sheng (who I think is cute) in GPG which I dropped because it was not my cup of tea despite its popularity and success. But this drama seems like another low budget drama. The make-up is terrible, looks patchy sometimes maybe because of poor lighting, the Demon Night people (Sorry cant even recall exact name) had weird make up on and you could see their original skin peeking through around the collar bone where the costume is supposed to cover it. Anyway, the CP sometimes looks like he had too much bronzer on idk lol Also, attention to details is missing as is sometimes seen even in huge budget dramas. An example is the presence of a fluffy make up brush the younger sister used. Can’t believe they had such cosmetic brushes back then. The acting is mediocre and Peter Sheng’s acting/role is forgettable. Don’t know why he signs on for such safe roles. He looks serious and boring just like in GPG. The Demon Night guy who makes trouble for the Mo family always making faces to look sinister is annoying. He tries too hard especially as he switches looks for day and night. The supporting cast is uninteresting as well. CGI is really bad too but then I say that about most C dramas too. Sorry for this review. I dropped it at ep 12 as I had difficulty staying engaged.
Cheng Yi as a 17 year-old Xiao Chengxu is passable, but Sarah Zhao as a 16-17 year-old Lan Mingyu is a bit overstretched.…
I agree. Apparently they are the same age but she looks more mature than him. They could have done more with her makeup to give her a girly and younger look like they did with Crystal Yuan in L&R.
You gave me a new prospective on XJ character. I still do think that SF suffers much more physcially compared…
You are right about SF’s physical pain. I guess that’s why we all fall in love with his character. He is so worthy of XJ too. The course of true love never runs smooth. sigh
I just watched episode 42 using google translate on youtube. The subs are not great so I am sure there are things I missed here and there. What I wanted to say is that no drama had me changing sides between the lead couples as often as this drama has done. I initially sided with XJ before switching over to SF’s side after seeing how much he had endured and XJ’s ruthlessness in the past 9 lives. But now my sympathy is all for XJ again as the story progresses. I know most viewers feel sorry for SF and I am not trying to diminish his sufferings but to me the most pitiful character is XJ. Everyone sees her as a mere chess piece in the power struggle, a heartless killing machine who must blindly submit to fate and fulfil her role as GoW instead of following the dictates of her heart. Even after she regained some of her memory, many things remained concealed from her by those she trusted the most including SF leaving her helpless, confused, torn and worst of all without free will. Her loyalty too was constantly tested by those she loved while being manipulated/lied to by them. SF on the other hand was fully aware of his identity, his past relationships with XJ and acted on his own free will to protect XJ as he promised to accompany her on her earthly trial. In the beginning I felt SF’s suffering was magnified to gain our sympathy and was presented in such a way as to make us believe he was the one who suffered the most. It turns out that XJ’s suffering is no less than SF’s. In fact, it is more because of her innocence which everyone tries to take advantage of. Having said that, I like SF’s character a lot (not so much of the actor yet but he is growing on me). I think what makes him a great male protagonist is his unwavering love and faithfulness. His character reminds me of Ye Hua in TMoPB which to this day remains my no 1 fave Xanxia/Romance/Fantasy drama. As for the villain HC, I love the actor, his character and acting. He is probably my favourite villain in C drama to date. I want to see him in a lead role in the near future.
I have just finished 28. Poor Si Feng. He endured so much for XJ and it made my heart ache for him so bad. So in all those 9 tribulations he recognised her but in this life he did not before he saw it in the mirror? XJ has so much hate in her heart and is so ruthless. She needs to wake up fast and give SF hope. She is gonna be badass once she finds out about HC.
The story at first seemed interesting up until the time she “ran away” to find herself and her roots post her wedding to YWY. After that the drama became repetitive and boring to a point that you could guess what was going to happen next. The scripts too were trite, and in some scenes the characters had long lines explaining plots that needed no explanation. I watched it continuously up to episode 35 and then lost patience and skipped to episode 45 which I watched half way and skipped to episode 46 and watched till the end skipping a few scenes in between. I initially felt sorry for the FL. I felt sorry for her plight especially for some one so young. She was being manipulated and there were many things that were out of her control. Her tragic love story with the Prince of Lanling really moved me and I was willing to make allowances for most of her behaviour. But then some things also did not make sense to me, some of which I listed below. I think this drama is a flop because of the FL’s acting and the long boring repetitive plot. 1. A married woman with no identity and possession leaving her husband not caring for her reputation or her future sounds a bit far fetched to me considering the time and setting of this drama. And the fact that she left him not once but three time (if I remember correctly) and twice for another man makes this story very unrealistic. No respectable man/ husband would allow his wife to do what she pleases. Even if he loved her deeply, there are other things to consider like his own rep, pride and most of all her own rep as ‘fallen’ woman. Back in those days especially it is unheard of and especially with a noble family like YWY‘s. 2. When she was in Zhou her thought was on GZG and vice versa when she was in Qi. And the first 30 something episode were all about her fleeing Zhou and Qi back and forth. Another unbelievable part is how she fled on foot most of the time that too unscathed even with zero fighting skills. The first time she did she even got caught in the middle of a war between those two states. 3. She fell in love all too easily with her ‘savior’ GZG (whom she did not recognise after her memory loss) and trusted a complete stranger with her life over her own husband. This happened right after she discovered that she had been manipulated by her ‘family’ but she still trusted a total stranger GZG and that too an ‘enemy’ at the time. 4. When the FL learned what YWY had done for her, she still resented him and longed to be with her lover. She felt exactly the same way when she learned the truth about GZG. Her inconsistency and indecisive in matters of the heart made it really hard to relate to her. It was so frustrating to see such a weak FL. What’s more, whenever she decided to give up on the men, she made it sound like she was making huge sacrifices or doing it for a good cause. 5. Too many Soul Pearl snatch scenes and each time some one from the underworld palace would mysteriously appear to snatch it. It is like they never sleep. 6. The all too powerful PM which not only the Majesty is afraid of but also the entire imperial court. He is so powerful that he could already rule Zhou state. 7. The FL’s lack of chemistry with YWY even after she fell in love with him. Both the male leads were OK but she only had romantic scenes with the second ML. No intimate scenes in a love story is totally ridiculous too. 8. Her memory loss was dragged out too long just like the Soul Pearl story. Yes one cannot cure memory loss but it was a bed post that fell on her not a rock. 9. The title is completely misleading. She never became the princess or queen of Lanling.
I like XJ when she is in her bad ass mode. I don’t get why she loses consciousness right after her battles? After shocks because of low cultivation? She seems be doing much better after she retrieved her sword though. I have only seen upto ep21 and cannot wait to see her kick some more asses like HC and YL’s..
HC is more of a snake than the actual snakes in this drama
Aren’t snakes and dragons related though? I think everybody hates his character. lol I personally think he is a good actor. I have seen him before in The Destiny of White Snake (where he played both the villain and heavenly emperor) and more recently in Autumn Cicada and was impressed by his performance. He makes a good villain.
I am currently watching it on productive Procrastination site which is great and I cannot thank the subber enough for her hard work which is solo volunteer work. I am also curious why this drama does not have Eng subs. It is such a good one and it is sad that many international viewers have been left out.
