Sooo I'm mostly interested in this show just because I've wanted to see Ja in a main BL role for a while now. I knew he was in TharnType 2, but I avoided that because I hated and dropped the first season. Now I see that this is an off-shoot and probably doing it's own thing, but they're still the same characters from season 2. So I'm wondering if I should bother watching this because 1. Having not watched TharnType 1 or 2, I may be missing out on a lot of context and details. And 2. I'm worried that the very things that I hated about TharnType to begin with will show up again in this show.
I'm worried about this series. Was Filmania the ones that produced the trailer? I was blown away at the production value of the trailer and thought this show could be something special. But if they're no longer making the series and it got bought by some other company, even if the series does still get made, the quality might not be the same. Actually, I'm pretty confident that it won't be the same. What happened with Filmania anyway? I heard it had something to do with a huge disagreement with the original author but also heard that they somehow went bankrupt.
I feel like the very reason we have Daon and Shinwoo teams, is because Taekyung is the endgame. If this wasn't…
Yeah, I actually retract my statement about Taekyung having no agency. Looking back, he has done quite a bit. He was the one actively trying to get on good terms with Shinwoo in the beginning and also put his foot down when Shinwoo was being too much of a tsundere, so he's definitely not a doormat. And although Daon was pampering Taekyung for over half the show, Taekyung was the one to ultimately take the necessary steps to see if they could be more than platonic. It hasn't just been Daon and Shinwoo trying to woo Taekyung, it's just felt like that in the past two episodes with the two officially declaring that they want the same thing.
I don't dislike Taekyung, but I do kinda think he falls into the "main female lead" role in a typical romantic drama. The kind of female lead that has next to no agency and is just an object of affection for the male leads as they work to win her over, because "that's the man's job." Taekyung is that, except he's a boy. I mean shit, we're all going "Team Daon!" or "Team Shinwoo!" like this is Twilight or something. Except unlike Bella, I don't despise Taekyung. I know some people find his character annoying, but I think the way he's so socially awkward and unfamiliar with the concept of friendship that he actually analyzes social situations and human behavior like some kind of AI program is kind of charming. Maybe because I remember how socially awkward and robotic I used to be in high school (and still kind of am honestly). ๐
I really just watched 10 Mafia men get beaten up by 1 Mafia man and 3 amateur college students. And the choices of music they used throughout most of the episode was so overdramatic I could not take it seriously. I'm trying to decide if this falls under "so bad, it's good". I mean, it's certainly...different. I wasn't bored at least...
There was so much that was good about this ep, but it's still missing something for me - I've been thinking about…
Funnily enough, that's precisely why I like this show. Taekyung and Shinwoo being endgame isn't surprising at all, but I appreciate that the show keeps me second guessing. I dunno, I've already watched plenty of BL with the exact same format and progression that it's nice to have something different. BL typically is extremely predictable almost every single step of the way. I'm not saying that a show where the main character has multiple possible love interests is anything new, but I personally haven't seen many like it as far as live-action BLs go. Plus, even if Taekyung and Shinwoo do get together in the end, I don't feel like the time with Daon was wasted because it made Daon a much more interesting character than he would've been otherwise. And I think 5 more episodes is plenty of time to flesh out Shinwoo's character if that's the direction they're going (unless Namgoong snipes the victory in the end).
Why are people acting like its easy to come out? Especially in somewhere like Korea where its still highly conservative…
Right. Coming out for a lot of people is a very stressful and sometimes long process. Before you come out to others, you have to come out to yourself and fully except these feelings. Daon seems to be at the stage where he's struggling to except his own feelings, but next episode's indicating that he's being forced out way faster than he's ready for. Add onto that his issues with wanting validation from his mom and being scared of disappointing people and, yeah, he's gonna panic. It's easy to just say "stop caring about what other people think", but getting to that point is a process that won't happen instantly.
I liked Bank more in this one to be fair but yes, the last two felt like fillers until the drama picked up again.…
I agree that Bank was probably at his best this episode and there was even a brief moment I thought he and Pitch were kinda cute. But overall, 6 episodes in, I'm really not feeling Bank and Pitch. I just find most of their interactions really awkward and forced, like they HAVE to fall in love because that's how it's written, but it doesn't feel believable. It could just be the acting though because some of their delivery in past episodes felt really awkward. I'm just not feeling the chemistry like most people are. ๐
Initially I was really into this show because of the bodyguard concept and gangster elements, as well as the mysteries surrounding it. Episodes 1-4 (or at least half of 4) I think implemented those elements well along with seeing the two main leads bond. But the past two episodes had those elements take a major backseat in favor of "character development" I guess? But honestly, it's just kinda made me come to the realization that I don't like any of the characters except Sun... ๐ Episode 7 looks like a banger though (literally ๐).
Daon and Taekyung. Shinwoo and Taekyung. That's all well and good, but was anyone else shocked when Namgung gave his last snack to Shinwoo to make him feel better? When has Namgung ever been willing to give up his food for anyone? Hmmmm... ๐ค๐
I might be alone on this, but I'm really not feeling Bank and Pitch so far. Everything about them just feels artificial. I'm having a hard time believing that they're falling for each other. It mostly feels like, because they're the second couple and it has to happen somehow, they're just placed into these random moments that really aren't naturally romantic or wouldn't believably lead to flirting, but it does because...BL. Pitch likes Bank because, he's cute, I guess? And Bank likes Pitch because...I have no idea.
I'm honestly shocked at just how many people seem to treat Tian like he's this perfect innocent little angel who did nothing wrong. Really? Don't get me wrong, I like Tian a lot, but I like him because he is NOT perfect. He's always trying to do the right thing, but he definitely makes plenty of mistakes and I really can't fault other characters for reacting negatively when it happens.
A big scene that everyone likes to jump at Tian's defense for is when his secret is revealed and Phupha and the village basically shuns him. I agree that Phupha calling him out in front of everyone was a bit of a dick move, especially calling him a liar when he himself kept Torfun's death a secret. But to be fair, Tian was already making his confession speech before he even got there. And the thing that made everyone reject him so hard is that he tells them that he was responsible for Torfun's death. Nobody knew that part, not even Longtae. So to find out that this man caused the death of someone they all love and basically replaced her? OF COURSE they're gonna be pissed, especially since he's purposefully not telling them the full details. I honestly thought their reaction was perfectly valid, although also very predictable since it falls into the whole "Liar Revealed" trope.
And yes, Torfun's death WAS Tian's mistake, partially at least. It's true that Tian wasn't actually the one behind the wheel, but as he said himself, he's the one who set the drag race up to begin with despite Tul telling him it's a bad idea. That's honestly kind of a trend with Tian. He insists on doing things his way and it ends up backfiring. He insists on doing a dangerous drag race despite Tul's protests. Torfun gets killed. He insists on taking the village kids to the waterfall despite Yod's protests. A kid almost drowns. He insists on catching Sakda and his goons himself despite Longtae's protests. He gets captured and Phupha gets shot.
This is what I mean about him not being perfect. His heart's in the right place and he's always trying to do good by the village which I respect. I also feel for him because trying to do the right thing, but having it constantly blow up in your face must feel pretty shitty. But I also can't blame some of the people around him for getting angry or annoyed when bad things happen because he made a brash decision.
Just because Skyโs dad doesnโt do business with drugs and prostitution doesnโt mean he is a good guy. He…
He did say "After that incident, I've been out of business." Probably after his wife was shot, he stopped all or at least most activity. The enemy mafia boss also said that he can never have too much money while Sky's dad seems to disagree. To me it seems like after stopping activity, he just kept the money he'd already made as well as his connections and followers, and planned on living off of that. But the enemy mafia boss wants to keep making more and more through drugs. Sky's dad certainly isn't a saint though, especially considering he adopted and raised up a child specifically to be a bodyguard with hardly any free will
Just because people make fun of something and recognize it's terrible doesn't mean they're not enjoying watching…
I'd argue it's good...by BL standards. At the very least, I really dig the premise. I've seen so many BL that're basically the same plot that anything different gets points in my book. Personally I'm tired of the usual college boys (probably in engineering) who slowly fall in love, but obstacles get in their way like a girl or misunderstandings due to poor communication. I fall asleep to that stuff now. But a bodyguard? The mafia? Mysterious backstories? Super cheesy and poorly choreographed fight scenes? Hell yes! Granted, this is the first BL with this kind of premise that I've personally watched. If there are others that have done it better, I'd love recommendations. KinnPorsche looks super promising, but that's not out yet.
I legitimately really hope this happens. They could be front-loading the series with Shinwoo and Daon moments, making you think it's gotta be one of them, but that could be a red-herring. Namgoong does seem like the most perceptive of the group. He acts like a goofball, but he's shown to know more than he lets on. It's possible that he could understand how Taekyung feels better than anyone and they could show that later on.
