As for Sang Yan's case, he was always straightforward and verbal in expressing his feelings for Yifan when they were in school.
But now he can't do that until she expresses it first bc she clearly rejected and restricted him from pursuing her. Even though he was & is sure that she likes him too, he doesn't want to misunderstand her feelings. That's why he's waiting for her actions in present time.
The writer of the novels (The First Frost & Hidden Love) wrote Brother's (Sang Yan) side of story (The First Frost) first and the novel was very popular.
Sang Yan in hidden love is what Sang zhi sees him (silly annoying big brother) from a sis's POV.
While he's actually a different person in the First Frost basically how Wen Yifan (his beloved) sees him (calm and cool person) and how exactly he's. It explains how a person can have different personality or perceived differently from their family and friend POVS.
In HL, they didn't show his partner. We can watch HL or TFF independently, without watching the other one. But sure you can find easter eggs if you've watched both dramas...like why Sang Yan or (his sister and Duan Jiaxu who are only supporting characters here) was at certain place/city or did something in HL or TFF. Because character background/famliy is same.
But it's not a continuation of Hidden Love. Their stories are totally separate from one another.
