I didn't read novel but read a comment about it that in the beginning it may seem like fl doesn't love ml that much, only he seems to be yearning for their love.
But as the story proceeds we'll get to know her side of story and how she felt during those times. She loves him very much.

We can see the progression in ep 8 as well how she subconsciously feels about him.

The writer of the novels (The First Frost & Hidden Love)
wrote Brother's (Sang Yan) side of story (The First Frost) first and the novel was very popular.

Sang Yan in hidden love is what Sang zhi sees him (silly annoying big brother) from a sis's POV.

While he's actually a different person in the First Frost basically how Wen Yifan (his beloved) sees him (calm and cool person) and how exactly he's.
It explains how a person can have different personality or perceived differently from their family and friend POVS.

In HL, they didn't show his partner. We can watch HL or TFF independently, without watching the other one.
But sure you can find easter eggs if you've watched both dramas...like why Sang Yan was at certain place/city or did something in HL or TFF. Because character background/famliy is same.
