Except societies where people can't find love see a dramatic drop in those having sex and getting married. According to statistics anyway. So from this we know that although some do both as stated, for the majority, the motivation for both sex and marriage are still feelings of love and connection.

She is not parenting though. That is my beef.
Everybody wants to give this portrayal a pass because parenting is hard.
The writers took it too far and ended up only showing pretty extreme verbal and emotional abuse as well as neglect. It is not believable that a loving parent is straight abusive and neglectful purposely nor is it believable that a character will accept and just get past it because "oh I get it now I am grown".
They overdid it.
Maybe they are not parents themselves and so did not know how to write the complexity of a parent confronted with a hurt and resentful teenager who is lashing out?
That would have created the need to discipline and teach, the teen refusing to learn from and rejecting the mother while really wanting to be mothered, resentment and misunderstanding building...that could be cleared up later with communication.
But that would require our female lead to be less than and so they gave us an abusive mother.
I am just saying. The writers could have and absolutle should have done better on that.

Bull. The mom is not stuck at all. She could have first showed love and teaching followed by punishment.
They keep showing us other women who see clearly how to teach and parent who also never bonded with NN in her childhood. Why can theybut not her own mother? Come on.
There was a choice between 'you are extremely smart and capable and I know you can do better now that I am here to teach and protect you' and 'you are the worst example of human not worth my time nor protecting and teaching. I am ashamed you are my child so I shall neglect and punish your character out of you'.
We are just supposed to find this reasonable because they tell us the mother loves her? LOL!!!!
