I noticed something VERY intriguing in the credits... [cont'd in spoiler]
It says Esther Yu plays two characters Ling Miao Miao / Mu Qing Shi - Mu Qing Shi was the highest ranked monster hunter who sacrificed herself to save the world 500 years before the events in the drama. She is Mu Yao's ancestor, and has a powerful magical weapon that can destroy all demons, reverse time, as well as create an illusionary world. Doesn't that sound awfully like what the system does? What if the system IS Mu Qing Shi's magical weapon and she used it to go back in time to change the bad ending? And maybe Ling Miao Miao is her from the present, but has no memories of what happened... omg
And it doesn't end there, because Ding Yu Xi ALSO plays two characters according to the credits - Mu Sheng and Fu Zhou, the author of the book. Maybe HE was the person who constructed this fictional world?? It doesn't seem like a coincidence that Miao Miao's father in real life looks the same as her father in the fictional world, the teacher is the queen dowager, and the girl that was bullied (whom Miao Miao saved) is played by the same child actress who plays Mu Yao when she was young. It seems like they all have irl counterparts!! (except for Liu Fu Yi) There was a scene that showed a rabbit-shaped apple on Miao Miao's desk at school as well.
My mind has been blown. I have a feeling there's gonna be a huge twist and revelation that will turn the story upside down. Perhaps they are in a time loop?
From what I remember, not really. She's an ordinary person without powers, unlike the other leads who are professional demon slayers. She does learn some simple spells from them, but not to the extent where she can battle with them side-by-side. She mainly uses her wits and her understanding towards the plot of the novel (she knows all the spoilers and twists the situation to her advantage XD)
I'm debating with myself right now on whether I should read the manhua webtoon on not. I don't want to spoil my…
I finished the webtoon yesterday, it was pretty good. I'm not sure how closely the drama will follow the webtoon though, so far they added some details and cut some less important scenes. I think maybe the key plot will be similar, so you can decide for yourself. I personally enjoyed the webtoon a lot tho
Isn't the title a little weird, it doesnt sound good in English...like, it's too long. Fox Spirit would have been…
It's because this drama is part of a novel series. There are several dramas under the "Fox Spirit Matchmaker" series, 3 to be exact, that are in the works. This is just one of them, and probably the earliest one to air.
This is honestly the best xianxia drama hands down, even though it's underrated on MDL. Ni Ni's acting is just so good. The plot gets slow in the middle but the themes explored are meaningful and emotional. ML's looks and acting aren't everyone's cup of tea and I can understand why. This is the only xianxia drama that I would actually rewatch from time to time. It is similar to Eternal Love and Eternal Love of Dream but better, imho.
I think Song Ha Yoon's acting really shined in this drama as Soomin. I've seen her previous work Devilish Joy where she was a female lead, and have always thought she was really pretty. I'm glad she's trying out more challenging roles and nailing them as well. Playing as Soomin really took a toll on her since she had to be continuously very emotional, but she successfully made Soomin into a 3-dimensional character. I hope she gets more recognition through this drama!
Don't get me wrong, I like this drama and am genuinely enjoying most of it, but the latest two episodes are quite flawed in terms of writing. The new character that was introduced is basically deus ex machina - just randomly inserted in the middle of nowhere to give a buff to the main villains and stir up unnecessary conflict between the leads. They couldn't find a more justified way to drive the plot and just resorted to outlandish plot devices. The writing had it's highs and lows throughout, so I never expected it to be perfect, but right now it's at a new low. Hopefully this new character arc doesn't drag on for too long...
I don't have problem with age gaps in general, but the way they portrayed a 19 year old made it look like she was 13 instead. I think the writers have a wrong idea about what 19 year olds are like. Many people act like grown ass adults at that point, especially for someone who had grown up under an abusive family, they would've grown to be more mature or dark/brooding. I understand the self-pity and identity struggles from the FL, but the light way in which it was shown makes it more trivial than it should be.
However, this has nothing to do with Kim Go Eun's acting and it needs to be made clear. She is an excellent actress and is one of the best Kactresses I've seen alongside Kim Tae Ri and Kim Da Mi (the 3 legendary Kims). It is more so about how the character was written. Imo Kim Go Eun did an amazing job portraying the character accurately as envisioned by the writer. When viewers bash a show, they often direct their hate towards the female lead actress, but not the male leads. Female actresses get a lot of hate that they don't deserve, even though they're only being professional and following the script.
The thing I love most about this drama is that, although the story centers around superheroes, it is ultimately about humans and humanity. Although the characters have superpowers, they are very relatable and still struggle with life, relationships, moral choices, and will, if not more than the average person due to their awful circumstances. The worldview is grim and realistic, people are used as tools and must do things they don't want to do just to survive in this world, and every choice to deviate from that path takes courage and sacrifices. This is a prevalent theme to most characters in the drama, even some of the "antagonists". Every character is like a real person, with a well thought out backstory to them, and from that you see the empathy of the writer. Absolutely phenomenal and unique take to the already saturated superhero genre. Kind of reminds me of Logan (the X-men spinoff movie) in some way?
Fyi, the story plot is completly different from the Western superpower shows. So it's not the superhero genre…
Trust me, it is actually very very different from American dramas once you find out what the story is trying to focus on. There's a grim, realistic twist to the superhero genre that comes from an Asian perspective. I hope you can give it a try :)
The problem is not about having a bad ending, it's about targeting the wrong audience and setting the wrong expectations. The drama was marketed as a campy romcom and introduced the first half of the story in that tone, only to suddenly dwindle down to a tragic over-the-top melodrama from the 90s. And then the core plot was also a scam - they told us the story was going to be about the ML seeking for a love that would make his heart beat, but the main romance ended up being pushed to the side and we didn't even get a chance to hear his heart actually beating. Whatever I went in thinking the drama was, it was surely not. It's like false advertising somehow.
I know Gu Won jumping off that cliff didn't make any sense at all, but it was so over-the-top and FREAKING HILARIOUS!! I haven't laughed that hard watching a drama for a long time LMAO
This keeps getting compared to WWWSK and Business Proposal but imo KTL is the only drama out of the 3 that actually reminds me of the old k-dramas I grew up watching and loved. I've been an avid k-drama watcher for 17 years and back then I started my addiction with k-dramas because of how cheesy, over-the-top and cute they were, but in recent years k-dramas have shifted to other genres and ways of storytelling to the point that I'm starting to miss the older days. Imo, 2017 was the last year of my fangirling days for k-dramas, after that I became less interested in dramas. KTL is one of the few dramas that actually make me want to get back into k-drama watching. Not only does it bring me back all those tropes I loved as a kid, it also added a modern, more critical perspective to them, like it's being meta and self-aware on purpose, so that the tropes can be fun to watch while still being relateable as it shows the daily struggles of the working class.

It was still above 8 a few days ago, wasn't it? That's weird.
