This drama is so much fun. Not recommended if you're looking for a proper romcom or a drama with no age gap between the leads (they are both consenting adults though). This is more comedy and romantic at the moment, honestly. You can still see some sparks fly in between all the comedic moments. And yes, there are some ridiculous scenes, e.g. bubbles. Cnetizens actually had a good laugh over it on weibo and dubbed this drama "a real soap opera" because of that. It actually reminded me of the dinner scene from the movie version - let's face it , both were quite ridiculous. But if you were able to watch the movie and enjoyed it, you might enjoy this one as well.
Finished. This is going on my rewatch list especially for Su Ci and Pei Zhao. Other than that weird misunderstanding in ep 22/23, their relationship is so cute to watch. I also like that once they got together they still had romantic moments but also worked together to solve murders. It was a good balance of that. Now if only we can get an epilogue of their married life. I'd imagine it's somewhat like what we saw in the ending where the prince himself had to go fetch his wife from work. It's like she works while he's used to doing nothing, like Fei Yuan once said lol.
I think the original novel is unfinished? Or if it is... the ending certainly felt abrupt... and i'm pretty sure…
You're probably right about the scriptwriter being a different Chen Yao, although I wouldn't be surprised if she has some involvement considering actresses these days wear several hats. As for the original work, I thin it's three short stories. I was able to access the last one on jjwxc and there doesn't seem to be a continuation anywhere else.
I just found out that this drama is based on three short stories by Wu Qu Ke Tao (Nowhere to Hide - what a pen name!) and the author is also part of the dramas scriptwriters team along with our leading lady, Chen Yao. I skimmed through the third story and it's completely different from the drama in terms of relationships. Pei Zhao/Prince Qi and Su Ci are students of the same teacher so she refers to him as shi xiong.
I've just finished ep 17 and had to stop myself from watching 18 since that's the most recent episode available. And wow, this drama is just so underrated. Here are some things that I really like about this drama. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD
- Dong Rushuang finding out that Su Ci is a woman. Of course I expected her to be upset since she had a massive crush on SC, but she got over this pretty quickly. Like yeah she was cold and bitter towards Su Ci after finding, but all it took was Xie Beiming explaining to her that Su Ci was probably also suffering from not telling the truth. (XBM didn't actually know what was going on since Rushuang just said a friend lied to her lol). Rushuang just cried a good cry hearing his words and got over it. In other dramas I've watched, Dong Rushuang's type of character would have acted super unreasonable and incredibly annoying for at least a few episodes. Not the case. So she gained a jiejie in her life and she's fiercely protective of her too. This is the type of SFL that we need.
- Speaking of misunderstandings, most of the conflicts are resolved pretty quickly. Su Ci finding out that Pei Zhao is actually Prince Qi, her idol, was something like Rushuang finding out about Su Ci. It barely lasted. Lol. But I think it's mostly because Su Ci has a good head on her shoulders and it would be so out of character for her to have an angry outburst over this. Maybe some people find her boring but I love that she can be so professional at work and let her guard down in front of Pei Zhao. (Can they please have more date scenes?)
- The absence of a third wheel in the main couple's relationship. Ok, I hope I don't speak too soon on this. At first I thought Xu Zhi was going to be the third wheel, but nope, she was killed off. Then came the foreign princess. I was so afraid she'd fall for Pei Zhao but it's evident she has eyes for his friend. Unless the scriptwriters decide to throw a third wheel this late into the game, I'd say we're not gonna have one in the form of a person. There's definitely something bigger lurking in the background for our leads.
Finished 9 episodes and enjoying it so far. Both leads are mature in their line of work but inexperienced when it comes to romance. This makes their interactions really cute. Chemistry is definitely there. Yeah sure the mysteries aren't strongly written but I'm hoping it gets better when it comes to the leads' respective background stories.
I really like her as an actress but I wish she'd stop filming anything Yu Zheng produces. I'm afraid she'll end up like a lot of actresses who've collaborated with him before and be thrown under the bus like them.
Overall a good choice if you have nothing to watch, but the humor and novelty faded really quickly for me. I'm pretty sure I would have dropped this halfway if it weren't for the acting and chemistry from the leads.
I'm really liking the opening theme and can't seem to get it out of my head. They picked really good vocals for this and I love that they used poetry as lyrics. It's been a while since I've seen Yan Jidao's works.
Meeting as children and then reuniting as adults, or in this case, adolescent is the least of their problems,…
I can't wait to see the romance between WSY and SMQ develop. I also like that Zou Ting Wei is finally playing a character who has a more playful side to him. This is my fourth drama of his and I'm finally getting to see him play something totally different.

Made it to ep 8. I think what makes this reunion even more meh for me is that she was the one who abducted him. I understand her motive and his obsession is borderline disturbing for me. It's Stockholm Syndrome. I do like their characters respectively, just not together. Meanwhile, I feel like I'll be more interested in Wen Siyuan and Shen Manqing. So much eye contact lol.
I think just seeing a Chen Yao in the credits twice and in two different categories is super confusing in general lol
