I think the people responsable for this show liked the setting of the novel so they decided to create a show with a simillar beguining but then creat their own story. Unfortunatly their story lacks any creativity or coherent story. The drama could have had much less episodes...
I don't think the actor saves the drama. And I am not criticizing his acting skills. The problem is that the story of the first 10 or so eps was building one kind of story and then it completly changed making the ml a vanilla charecter and drama turned into the usual historic melodrama with its cliches that feel forced because the story wasn't leadiing to them (ex luo mei crying for the crown prince)
