Everything would've had much more impact if we'd seen something suggesting his heart wasn't fully in it even while he was betraying them

I didn't mean struggle for the things he didn't do. The struggle for the things he actually did. We see him block ZY's each sense, without seeing him hesitate for a second. So showing him hesitate when PSJ was present and on alarm doesn't really have an impact.
Crying there also doesn't have much of an impact because he cries when he's scared too

Edit: Maybe it's my imagination but your tone sounds a bit condescending.

(That the shameless teacher actually had the audacity to guilt trip BJ to repay him, gives me blood pressure!)

Anyway one of my qualms is they never really showed us BJ struggling between saving his friends or his mom (I don't mean his past).
They did it a little with PSJ.

Even if they were strictly trying to avoid giving the twist away, there's always flashbacks.
