Bad director or bad Female lead? Both i think. Just rushing everywhere.
IMO mostly director, screenwriter, editor and overall execution.
Lusi is doing what she can within the settings. If you watched TLB you know how well she can do when given a role out of her norms and better production teams.
Up to 8 eps TROTAR is much better executed than this one, both being lighthearted ancient dramas with low cost. Overall just a mindless comedy.
The problem lies with the director and screenwriter, and maybe the MLs too. I can't get the chemistries between Lusi and the MLs yet, but maybe they will be there later - hopefully. What's with the attention to details by the production teams? Certain shots and dialogues are too modern, and the cameraworks and editing are so amateur. The plot is badly written too.
Lusi is good as usual. Maybe she is the only thing I enjoy in the show. There is nothing new, but she did what she could with the shoddy script and direction. If anything I still can't wait for her S+ productions WRTW and LLTG. Other than better roles and stronger production teams, YY and Wu Lei will make awesome MLs. And also Hu Tong which is a serious production said to have a good script. HMH is not bad.

Low budget dramas doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable ^^. Besides wasn't Lusi get recognized last year after her low budget drama streaks of TROTAR and DITK? People were talking of how much $$$ she brought to Tencent after the 2020 performance report got out a few months ago lol
Oh man! I don't really like the main actor if Xu Kai Cheng is the ML. Seen a few of his past works and not a fan.
Honestly although XKC isn't one of my favourites either because I think his acting is mediocre, but let's believe in Lusi. She has never let us down in her chemistries with her MLs. I remember reading someone said you can push anyone or anything to Lusi and she will make it work. Who knows she can bring up XKC just as fine? They look good in the trailer ^^

Personally I think the investigation part got a bit better after ep 10-ish but maybe I just got used to it lol, but the bromance is indeed adorable up to 16.
Can they make Tang any more annoying? The other love interest Yi Fei is likeable, mature and professional, I also like the team member Qi Ran but still can't warm up to Tang..

Yes like Reijir said. Maybe I should correct myself there. It should be BROMANCE instead of BL. Although this drama was earlier promoted together with other BL dramas, the novelist later come out and denied her novel is BL.

If you are looking for pure no romance bl I think can wait until they air ancient detective drama A league of Nobleman. That drama got it's license yesterday but the airing date not announced yet.

Yes in fact imo the romance is one of the drama's many flaws lol, it would've been so much better if the MLs can just be career oriented. I dislike Wang's female match. The forensic doctor is ok tho. Oh lord the subs by Mango sucks haha

Haven't heard any rumours. It's too late for Sept I think. I heard October is a commemoration month where they encourage airing patriotic dramas. Personal prediction I think Q4.

It might be the only bl/bromance related drama to come out after WOH for this year maybe because the original bromance is mild and the original novel author claid her novel isn't bl. The others don't know need to wait until when..sad.I really want to watch SPL/FHLJ
8 episodes in and yes to sum up this just a light hearted comedy focusing on the master/apprentice line as the main line and the detective work is just a background. Doing well as a fun easy drama but badly written if viewed as a detective drama. It's not bl either, it's apparent that both have official bg matches. It's just that the drama is funny and the master/disciple has great chemistry.
