in the current incarnation, he is a scholar (in the novel, ok) and when Su Ying betrayed Tian Yao, the scholar was a war general she was trying to save that she had met in a reincarnation cycle. But...unfortunately for SY, the scholar can't stand her in his current incarnation, and fell in love with another demon girl.
Definitely agree with the latter part.But the ending???? NO IT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER
did you mean to write "that was not a HEA (happy ever after)? but an open one? So maybe I misinterpreted the final scene - I thought he prevented her from dying (body and soul etc) by using the heart protection scale, but he left the world, and did not reincarnate, just remained in purity of essence. To me that was a happy ever after for everyone, he was willing to acknowledge their love story but his love for everyone (which she says to their daughter) was so strong he saved the world - an HEA for all.

oh hey cutie .... feelz. i am still savouring the last of TtEotM - totally nailed the ending, one of the best xianxias ever made. Leo is amazing, breath-takingly beautiful and nuanced acting, and Bai Lu was so heartbreaking at the end. Now looking forward to BftB (Neo is gorgeous! Hope to like Zhou Ye too) and will share with you, good luck with college work so we can watch together (but think we are different time zones)/

KP - i think they did a great job at the end to show all the motivations and to show that he had changed so much from their love and was willing to use that learning to rescue the world...we as viewers want the "lovestory HE" but we did have a HE - he rescued the world, he proved his purity, she has that and they showed their love manifested as a bright, peaceful world with their daughter....that last scene of him shows his lasting grace. but ok - can understand that it's not a traditional HE as in a romance with them both waltzing off into the sunset.

In the novel Tian Yao stabs Yan Hui with his sword because he needs the effect of his heart protection scale that she has (by accident) to break the seal on his dragon bones. Not once but twice. He is telling her the story of how he is betrayed and . . . whammo, pops her one! She's furious, naturally. But the trailer you mention - is it from eps 1-5 or a general trailer - could just be how the drama is handling the script. In the novel, when he has to fight the xian cultivator sect leader who is most afraid of him (not Su Ying, but her shifu), Yan Hui gives him back both the scale and her neidan (which was his as well).
The lover who betrayed Tian Yao is Su Ying, one of the antagonists. Yan Hui is a completely different person.
Su Ying loves someone else, and always has done. Tian Yao only loved her once (naively, because she was just using him to get his scales for her lover). He absolutely doesn't love her now, and is sworn off love because of the way she betrayed him. There is no love triangle. He is not an ice-block, he is just dealing with how he was abused. Protecting his own heart now that he is free of the trap she laid. But develops feelings for Yan Hui because of who she is...and ... fate.
