This is weak. The acting in the main couple is... well, they showed up to work. Of course Linus Wang doesn't have to be a great actor if they put him muscle shirts all day.
The second couple is better, but that accidental kiss was so stupid I almost dropped this.
This is really an endless string of cliches and tropes, and Sean Chang is nearly supernaturally annoying - it's gotten to the point that I consider fast-fowarding through all his scenes but then I don't because I like looking at Linus Wang's biceps too much. This is a big drop down from History4.
i really don't understand the comments, it's not as bad as some of yall be saying, even if we're talking only…
The second couple in History4 were the best in the whole franchise - one of the only pairs with complex characters with a complex relationship and with amazing acting. This series is a dull stream of cliches and tropes - they even threw in an accidental kiss - and the acting is pretty uneven, to put it kindly. The second couple are better though. And Linus Wang is hot.
What the f@$^ was that? It's like the writer said, "well, I can't answer ALL the questions in 20 minutes, so I'll answer NONE, and just because I take malicious pleasure in deliberately wasting your time, I'll introduce a few more."
That ending was the ultimate expression of lazy writing. Also, I HATE scenes where someone is asking someone something and he just stands there, literally for five minutes, saying nothing.
"And I like that Seung Hyun isn't totally useless like most ukes and Jong Chen isn't the usual borderline Dom"also…
I don't mind an unbalanced power dynamic - I just don't see why the uke has to be totally useless. That's why I loved Love Mechanics despite the stupendously unoriginal plot, or My School President, where it's not even clear which is which. I assume the school president because he's taller, and 99/100 that's the decider.
I liked the cinematography in the head-on-the-shoulder scene, but it really exposed that they were wearing enough makeup for an entire circus of clowns. I really wish they wouldn't cake it on them like that.
I really like this series. It's a fairly simple plot (so far), but it avoids being suffocated by cliches and tropes. For example, when they kiss, Seung Hyun doesn't do that stupid super-wide eyes thing which looks really not-right in live action. This kiss was also actually pretty good - they even used their hands.
And I like that Seung Hyun isn't totally useless like most ukes and Jong Chen isn't the usual borderline Dom - he's vulnerable and a realistic character. It's almost not a BL - they're both gay and identify as such, and lacking all the tropes, it's more of a normal LGBTQ+ series. I approve.
Have you ever been a repressed gay kid in a homophobic society with an even more homophobic father? Try that first,…
I agree with all that - I just thought the condemnation in the OP was too much. He's in high school with his father right there on the verge of violence, not a grown man. It's hard sometimes to look at these things objectively when the actors are quite clearly grown men and not high school students, but that's BL for you.
It embraced it with an unyielding grip for 8 episodes where absolutely nothing happened until the dessicated corpse of the drama collapsed into a pile of ash.
But for this series, the scenes from next week showed them almost naked on a beach so I suspect they'll do it better.
Love this episode! Thank God the plot is now moving. Though some plot holes are very hard to ignore, I will just…
"Hole" is kind. I was thinking more like "Grand Canyon-sized chasm." But maybe then it's so giantic that it's just part of the scenery and you just stop noticing it.
That action scene was terrible. How were people standing totally still ten feet apart able to miss each other and why did they do nothing for ten seconds at a time? It's better to just not have scenes like that and just have the action offscreen.
Nueng's family deserves to die for their horrendously bad security. Nobody heard them shoot the guard? And the prince of the family is guarded by a teenaged fisherman with a broken arm?
At the least the kiss wasn't bad, and that scene of Pond & Phuwin at the beach next episode - yikes.
Probably an unpopular opinion but for me this series was kinda meh.Putting aside the "sci-fi/apocaliptic scenario"…
I didn't care about the science - is it really important? If you fall onto someone in such a way as to accidentally kiss them, there would be blood and teeth everywhere - likewise, the chances even a strong guy can just catch a falling full-grown man sideways (for the camera angle) with one arm without throwing out his back are closs to nil. Not to mention people having cancer cured by a damp-towel wipedown (that's a slight exaggeration, but there are fevers that caused fainting cured by this method. Have you ever fainted due to a fever? That's really, really serious.)
But I did care about the ridiculous Victorian 12-year old routine that Art was pulling. Dude. You're a 20-year old man and the WORLD IS ENDING. You're almost literally the last two people on earth and you're worried about how scandalous it looks to be pecked on the cheek? If a Victorian 12-year old were told the world was about to end, you can bet she'd get busy to make sure she had as much dick as she could get before it was all over. Ugh, I'm so over the seme-uke thing. Retire this stupid trope, please.
I gave it an 8 because it's so well made, but the story was meh for me. I hope we get to see more of Art. (Does he have trouble remembering his character's names? He's "Art" in this and "A" in the BL he's in.)
Great review. You managed to encapsulate the key points that makes this such an extraordinary drama. It's a shame…
Thank you! I totally agree - a BL audience expects a fluffy happy ending, and this one was more or less broadcasting that wasn't going to happen. But because of that, it got downrated. But it wasn't really a tragic ending - maybe bittersweet. I still have my childhood teddy bear (it's actually a duck. Mr. Duck, because I was really creative as a child), and he's in a drawer - I have a fondness for it, but it also makes me sad to think about how he was my best friend throughout my childhood.
I don't blame the actors. I think they did the best they could but the writing and directing and post production…
I loved Gameplay in Ingredients and He/She/It, but he hasn't done anything for me since. I agree it could be directing, but I'm not sure anymore. I do hope he gets a good role so we can see what he can do.
I liked this series, didn't love it - I didn't really enjoy watching it and I wish it had more to say. But the acting and directing were great. I gave it a good review.
