Actually, more easily than Americans accept it, other than a few coastal areas.
And I agree, BL is not a deep genre, nor is it meant to be. Occasionally it delves deeper, and when it does I'm thrilled, but usually it's a pile of fluff with First World Problems and occasional romantic setbacks (that are entirely caused by implausible failures of communication).
The strictly formulaic nature of the series should be the first clue. Do serious stories feature people having accidental kisses?
Hey, I don't disagree with you at all. I find all of the JBLs you mention slow as well -- and I'm glad you enjoyed…
Or the opening scene of The Godfather, which is an absolute masterpiece. Slowness has to be handled with skill, and in a visual medium needs to use proper blocking and photography to help tell the story. By the end of that first scene you already know Vito's character even though you haven't seen him yet.
The problem with BL is that the slowness is usually due to terrible writing and editing.
The early stretch of Dear to Me was meant to be a comedy - thought it was hilarious when the ganster shows up…
I like it if I'm expecting it. I do not generally like it when BL goes there, although in BL it's usually someone's ex-girlfriend dropping out of the sky to cause trouble through cringey treachery and manipulation.
If it's based on past trauma that isn't of the hit-you-over-the-head variety, then it can work, like in Something In My Room or Teddy Bear.
I guess what I really mean is dark is fine if it's well-written, which BL almost never is.

I would argue that Double Mints is a totally different genre than BL. The line gets blurred between LGBT media and BL, like for instance Gaya Sa Pelikula, which straddles both, but BL is at heart fantasy and comes from a female perspective and is aimed at female audiences.
That's why seme and uke are two totally different genders, and the seme is almost universally taller, stronger, and older, and the uke puts up with a level of infantilization and patronizing behavior that most men would find infuriating, humiliating, and insulting.
Like the wiping the food off the corner of the mouth cliche. Most guys would barely put up with that from their mother, let alone another guy - they would slap his hand away.
This is wonderful! Thanks for directing me to it. Funny, but I was not thrilled with The On1y One even at the…
The early stretch of Dear to Me was meant to be a comedy - thought it was hilarious when the ganster shows up as a teacher. Later, when it got "serious" it grew a bit tedious. That's another BL failing - they can never bear to just let a comedy by a comedy, like Love Stage. The source material is hilarious, but no, they had to make it a drama.
Light isn't a BL - the clue is the word "realistic". It's an LGBT film. It was excellent.
The BL with the guy who could hear ghosts was Stay By My Side, and I agree, it was enjoyable fluff.

History4 was actually subversive because the brothers grew up together and the older one was a semi-guardian, so the power dynamic was very morally questionable, except it was reversed because the younger brother held all the power - and used it - to get what he wanted, no matter what damage he had to do. And was a borderline sociopath.
The usual step-brothers trope usually involves them meeting as post-pubescents just as the series starts.
Several chapters ago they showed us that Wan has the photo of a "friend" who disappeared out of nowhere saved…
There's no chance I'm going to remember a detail like that from weeks ago. They should have had a reminder this episode. And did they say it was a friend that disappeared, or do we just know that now? The problem is that Wan & Beer have had most of their screentime wasted with endless staring scenes instead of moving the plot forward. Except this episode, where everything happened all at once.
It does hurt to see the poor turtle - they don't need as much freedom as we do if you feed them, but still... a little plastic box - so while everyone's at school he has to stand around in his own excrement, and even if you assume the box is cleaned every day, it's still terrible.
Nah, remembering the Past when you think about the past is actually possible lolFor example now, I've just remembered…
Of course it's possible, it's just bad writing. Also, if this is a story narrated by SW, then we shouldn't see things that he doesn't. The only exception are the post-credit scenes which are clearly delineated as JT's perspective. Otherwise, don't use the narrator approach and just tell the story.
I really, really wish they'd dump the teachers plot - it's just tiresome, annoying, and cliched. Does anyone watch it, or do you ff?
This episode was 90% flashback, and since the entire series is a flashback, they were flashbacks of flashbacks, which doesn't really make sense. You'd have to be remembering the past, and remembering in the past when you remembered about the past. Sigh.
But the ending was beautiful. What a difference it makes when you have actorrs who can act. I made fun of 30-somethings playing high school students, but it's worth it for the superior acting experience.
Four people complaining about the wilting heat. But wearing jackets.
That was boring and nothing happened, but at least God did his premature stripping before a shower and Diew reacted like a normal person and oggled him. He was ready, alright.
That was good kissing - they were actually making out. with a hint of tongue.
Anyone else cringe during any of the scenes where they're playing music? Particularly when they show God on the…
You know that old adage, "write what you know"? Yeah, BL writers don't do that. Clearly none of them have ever had a beer given they think one is enough to erase your memory and make you violently ill.
they're adorableeee. i'm confused by the negative comments, i thought we were all enjoying the softness TT
Some softness is fine, but there's a point where it's both oppressive and dull AF. I watch because I think Big is hot, but I ff through a lot it. I would honestly break up with anyone who infantilized me like he does Diew. I want a partner, not a parent.

I don't know who Tan is, so that was confusing.
