Well, they're trying. I can give them that. There's a but of overacting they can dial back, and the editing could be a bit sharper. They did avoid tropes and cliches, so I did appreciate that quite a bit.
It's not an important point, but I do appreciate that Filipino BL characters dress for sleep like normal human beings intead of Victorian-era British aristocrats.
I was enjoying the epsisode until the stupid accidental kiss ruined it. I could barely pay attention it took me out of the story so much. The last scene was a partial redemption. I'm a bit done with the pacing at this point. It's been fine, but that was Ep 8, and I'm sure much of the rest will be consumed with external drama, although I'm thankful that it appears it will be caused by another man rathrer than the usual villainous ex-girlfriend who drops out of the sky.
This is very stupid drama for sure, but I still enjoy it, lets face it: most of BL's are stupid, something good…
Hmm. I sort of agree, but to me this is boring-stupid. And while the plot can be silly, people still need to behave like people - even stupid people, and consistent, even if consistently stupid. Plus the silly tropes thrown in for no particular reason. A Man Who Defied the World of BL was obviously silly, but so intelligently written, and uses tropes in a hillarious way. Or the current Ossan's Love - whacky but well-written and acted. Minus 10 creativity points because it's a remake, but good remake is still better than a bad bag of tropes there due to a total lack of creativity.
This series might have worked better if it had been written as a comedy instead of a drama.
Actually, I looked into it and now I feel really bad. This production company isn't just working on a shoestring, it's more like hanging off a cliff by a fraying thread. Please accept my apologies for speaking to you that way, and I'm going to contribute to them as pennace and to support their efforts.
You don't happen to know how, do you? There's no apparent way.
The first episode was alright for me this has potential! The only thing was I found some of Gun’s acting to…
He's awful. I thought he's at least be funny after his performance as Techno, but he's well-rounded in his awfulness. Boat is fantastic, but it's not enough. Bad lead plus terrible writing makes this close to unwatchable. I say close because Boat shirtless. Or shirted. Just Boat.
If it continues to be this terrible I don't know if I can make myself watch it even for Boat, whose acting continues to to amaze me, not to mention what he looks like.
Gun is downright bad - I'm kind fo surprised because I liked him in a comedic role, but he doesn't have enough ability for a serious role.
Also, a law needs to be passed banning anyone who's never been drunk from writing drunk scenes. That was so ridiculous it wasn't even entertaining.
The writing is awful. Nobody behaves like a normal human being. Nobody even behaves like an abnormal human being. It is impossible to solve a Rubik's cube without looking at it, unless all the squares are marked with something like Braille. You could if you were the one who messed it up, but not when someone else did. That was lame. The villain is a cartoon - if he's had a mustache he would have twirled it. No grown man has ever reached across the table to spoon feed another man that he barely knows - you don't even do that with a boyfriend. It's just weird an out of character unless you're 5. It doesn't even make sense that the villain is trying to kill Sky. Why? All that will do is ignite a war with someone more powerful than he is who won't stop until he's dead.
This show can't pass up a tired cliche or trope. Piggyback ride? Check. Moist towel wipedown? Check. Faces too close together and staring? Check.
The problem is that if they're going to do a story like this, they need to go a lot more OTT. This is just limp and awful.
People really hate this series, but I don't think it's THAT bad. It's certainly more watchable than TharnType2...
The main problem so far is the story. It really needed to address what a horrible thing they did to Bank - why, what are the conequences & accountability, how can Bank get past it. It feels a little like string of scenes stapled together rather than a story.
I've never thought Fluke Natouch was THAT amazing - being able to turn on the waterworks at will is not the same thing as great acting. He's solid, and in this case having to work with not-so-great a script.
I think maybe I don't hate it as much because I saw the original a long time ago, so I don't really care what happens to Bank & Golf.
But Nuea & Tar - that is fire. I knew Mon was a fantastic actor, but Kim was great too - that's some chemistry there. They should have just made a series about them - it's 100 times more compelling than the main pair's story. But I can see why it would annoy people who were here for Bank & Golf, or Fluke - they're hardly in this so far.
A bunch of old guys trying to pass as teenagers and the same old plot of a very handsome yet social awkward and…
And with skin that puts porcelain to shame. The next time you call people in their mid to late 20s "old guys", I'll slap you. (I won't.) It's a good thing the teachers dress differently or there would be no way to tell the difference between them and the students.
I'm hoping in future episodes his behavior is character-driven rather than whatever the immediate need of the plot is - I'm giving them leeway because this is the premiere. But you can see below that everyone thinks he's neurodivergent, which I don't think is supportable based on what we've seen, and that's not an encouraging sign for the quality of the writing.
taegyung doesn't seem to be an introvert, just neurodivergent. also the girl does not attend their school, they…
I just rewatched it imagining him as neurodivergent, thinking everyone else can't be wrong - but I think everyone else is wrong. It's possible that he's intended to be neurodivergent, but I honestly don't think the author knows enough about the subject to write the character.
Think about the cafeteria scene where he anticipates where the teacher is going with his story, or his awareness that dildo boy was being menacing in the hallway, his disappointment when that boy took the chair next to him, or his general perception of people's motivations. I did notice that Lee Sae On's acting is really good - the subtlety of the disappointment over the chair was really excellent.
I don't think it's really important whether or not he is ND if he's an interesting and consistent character. That's my objection - he's neither. But I realize this is just the first episode, so I'm going to be patient and give it a chance - I've been totally wrong before and ended up enjoying something I thought I would dislike.
It's irritating, isn't it? I'm guessing whoever wrote this is an extrovert. Or at least whoever directed it. Or…
Everyone seems to think he's supposed to be neurodivergent, which I don't see - I'll give it a chance, but so far it seems dull and formulaic - I hope I'm wrong.
I think a lot of people didn't understand the MC yet, he's supposed to not understand people or social rules very…
Everyone knows people like that. I've had a boyfriend on the spectrum.
He says "Thank you" when appropriate, etc. That's understanding the rules, and he seems to understand people's motivations fairly well. I don't think his character is consistent.
And in any case, whether or not he's neurodivergent doesn't change that this is a boring rehash of a tired formula.
taegyung doesn't seem to be an introvert, just neurodivergent. also the girl does not attend their school, they…
I think maybe I was looking at the poster, which has her in the same uniform - thanks for the clarification.
He doesn't seem neurodivergent, either. Other than shyness, he shows no other signs of this. I don't think his character is written very well - his behavior appears to be governed by whatever the plot needs.
Writing and acting a character on the spectrum is very difficult, especially in a romance. I hope they surprise me.
Watching it 5 minutes of the first episde, this is why Kdrama drop down, they love perfection and lost all their…
I agree - this is really dull and unimaginitive. Everyone's suddenly throwing around the word "neurodivergent" as if that explains inconsistent writing of a character. This a particularly flat excution of a tired formula. It's too bad - I was really looking forward to a longer Korean series.
I think a lot of people didn't understand the MC yet, he's supposed to not understand people or social rules very…
Yes, we have. His acting is fine, the writing isn't. One minute he's behaving as if he's on the sepctrum, the next he's not. If they want an autistic character, then have one. Don't go in and out to suit the plot. He understands social rules just fine. All his responses are socially appropriate, they're just flat or awkward.
I like lay Talay, his look reminds me of river phoenix for some reason, I don't even know why, because River where…
It's writing & directing. Perth (the dead one) was quite good in My Engineer where he had to communicate only with acting because his character didn't speak. The live BF was great in YYY where he had to be alluring in the middle of complete chaos & insanity.
I've never thought Talay was very inspiring as an actor, but he's always been at least competent.
The writing has been terrible in this series - the one with the ghost was well-written except the ending, but the rest, including (I would say especially, but I'm in a minority) Puth & Kaeng. But at least they had a plot. How many fires can you have in a single story? It would have been too much in a full-length series. The theater alone had two! If you're going to make it that ridiculous, then make it an absurdist comedy or something.
I was in love with River Phoenix when I was a kid, all the way from Stand By Me to the end.
Why is the entire cast of My Engineer in this? Why don't they just do My Engineer 3 and set it after they graduate? I'm not really complaining because I like the cast, although Cooper & Poy were kind of on-note, but that's probably the writing.
Cooper has one of the best non-malicious smirks in the business.
I get where you’re coming from but this IS groundbreaking for a kdrama. This is prob the most high production…
This is not sarcasm - I'm really asking: What do you view as groundbreaking? Is it that it's an actual series instead of a movie cut into 8 parts? I suppose that's something, but I'd rather have a short Where Your Eyes Linger than 16 hours of this.
One thing I've appreciated about kbl is the attempt to try new things - this is just copying a tired formula. I could take it if at least if they did it well - but this is really dull. When the only excitement is someone accidentally getting a dildo shoved up their a$$, you know you're in trouble.
IDK, maybe they'll surprise me. I'll give it one more ep. See? You swayed me. :)
