There's a petition to keep Beautiful Mind its original length of 16 episodes, if you are interested and even if…
Thanks for telling us. I don't think it will change KBS's decision, but at least by signing the petition, we can tell the production team how much we appreciate their work.

I am absolutely sick that this drama is being cut down. It is so good. And I think it actually needs all 16 episodes.…
Guys, let's not blame Doctors or local viewers who watched them. I understand your frustration, but hospital-centered romcom will always be more appealing to people than a psychological medical mystery (or whatever Beautiful Mind's genre is). Not to mention the casting mess in pre-prodution, which might put some people off of watching this drama. Anyway, the episode cut is upsetting, but I'm still hopeful of a satisfying ending.

Park So Dam is a terrible lead. I predicted it in the beginning. No wonder the ratings are down.
I respectfully disagree. I do think her character was badly written, at first, but it becomes better later on. The stuff that made viewers hated Jin-sung in the beginning (her naivety bordering on stupidity and even criminality) was written in the script itself, and not because of Park So-dam's acting choices.

Guys, let's shower KBS's Twitter (@KBSWorldTV, @MyloveKBS, @KBS_drama), Instagram (@kbsworldtv & @mylovekbs) and YouTube (@DramaKBS & @kbsworld) accounts with words of appreciation for this drama. That way, at least the production team--the director, producer, actors and all the crew--will know how highly we think of their work, even if KBS doesn't.

Just heard that KBS is considering cutting back the number of episodes because of the Olympic Games. Yeah, right. I bet they wouldn't even think about it if the rating is higher. Am so upset right now :(

As someone who enjoys this drama, I don't think it's that great, to be honest. But Jang Hyuk's character is fascinating, and that what makes me return to the drama, even if it has so many plotholes.

Maybe what I'm trying to say is, if you find the male lead compelling, this drama might worth your time. But if you don't, just drop it.

I really love Jang Hyuk and his role here...this drama is really promising..but Gye Jin Sung annoys the hell out…
God, I hope they won't force unwarranted love line into the story. I'm the kind of person who will ship a rock with a tree, but like you, with the characters as they are now, I really can't see anything resembling a romance between the two. I'd rather that they influence each other for the better and develop mutual respect or something.

Being "abnormal" itself isn't the problem, I think. It's that the abnormality might give rise to immorality--I forgot who said that and in which episode, Yeong-oh or his father in ep. 3 or 4, I think.

I wonder if it has something to do with the casting debacle. Since they had trouble securing the leads in the first place, you kinda doubt that the drama would be any good, that the script is good enough. I myself wouldn't even try watching this if not for the positive review at Dramabeans.

A Sion Sono film that you can watch with your whole family! I love it that you can take everything at face value or read more into it. Oh, and Pikadon is terrifyingly cute.

I agree with what occultangle said. And as someone who actually ship Sakura with Kohei, I don't really think the two of them together is a good idea. Since he's a mentor who has taught her many things and happened to be much, much older than her, she might not feel capable of standing on equal ground with him. And even if Kohei truly likes her, it also seems that he projected a bit of her late girlfriend on Sakura. In short, not a promising start or basis for a romantic relationship.

I second your comment on taiga dramas. They are awesome! (And I need to watch more of them.)

Oh, they remake dramas from each other constantly. Some Japanese dramas that are remakes of Kdramas that I can remember: Maou (from The Devil/Mawang), Zeni no Sensou (from Money's Warfare), the upcoming drama Hope (from Incomplete Life/Misaeng), My Boss My Hero (a remake from a South Korean movie of the same name).

Thank you so much for this article. If this fails to convince people to at least give Jdramas a try, I don't know what can!

In general, I love Jdramas and Kdramas equally, and I choose which one to watch based on my mood at a particular moment. It's just frustrating to see fans of Kdramas disparage Jdramas (and vice versa), especially since many of them based their case against the dramas of that country on generalized, incorrect assumptions (which you have tackled so thoughtfully in your article).

On a side note, I suspect that some Kdrama fans don't venture to Jdramas because Kdramas are simply more readily available. It'd be great if legal streaming sites were to offer more Jdrama selection.

The main reason I don't watch a lot of jdramas is that I can't find them subbed on legal sites.
Just torrent the files and get the subtitles from the guys who actually created them. By doing so, at least you're not helping people who profit from pirated material, though technically it might still count as copyright infringement.

Despite everything, I find myself loving this drama very much. I think what really made this drama work for me was the directing. While the acting is solid, the story itself (or a variation of it) is really nothing new. But I just love how it was shot and I love the little details, like sakura petals falling during the title sequence.

Lastly, I love it that the drama is more about how an encounter can change your life and that you can change if you want to than about romantic love, which many people seem to be inferring instantly when they saw the drama's title.
