Has anyone found a site which consistently subs Japanese dramas into English? Please share!
To answer your question: No. (If there is such a site out there, like the DF/Viki of Jdramas, I would also love to know.)
Crunchyroll and Viu sometimes provide Japanese dramas in English subs. Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix have also done the same in recent years, even creating their own original programming (e.g. Higana, Atelier, Uchuu no Shigoto). But most of the subbing are done by fans, who work for free and share them in sites like d-addicts or Livejournal.
And since most newer Jdrama fans don't seem to realize this, I feel that I should point out that Kissasian, Dramacool, Gooddrama and the like are basically illegal. They don't pay for license, and they take the subs either from legal sites or from subbers providing them for free. I understand that some--if not most--of us, don't have access to legal channels, but at the very least, please refrain from sharing illegal links in open forum. If you really have to, maybe it would be better to share them in private messages.
I'm sorry if I sound like a spoilsport, but considering how aggresive the authorities are in cracking down piracy in recent years, I don't want MDL to get the short end of the stick because we're seen as promoting piracy.
Thank you for the article! Zenkai Girl is my go-to drama whenever I feel like watching something cute and sweet. (It does help that I adore Aragaki Yui.)
And like several people here, I'd like to give a shout out to Love Shuffle. And don't forget Date: Koi to wa Donna Mono Kashira, which was absolutely, amazingly hilarious.
No offense but I don't know man, I live in Japan and constantly try to watch Japanese dramas but they all…
Except for WOWOW dramas, Japanese dramas obviously look low budget compared to, say, Korean dramas. As for them having no depth, it really depends on the genre. When it comes to showing poignancy in little moments, nothing beats Japanese slice-of-life dramas, IMO.
Love the history summary and your movie/drama recs. Thanks for writing :). Oh, and may I ask what do you mean about "a bunch of crap on this [comfort women]"? Are they, like, trying to justify it? (Which is weird, if they are. Isn't it an accepted fact that most of comfort women were coerced into sexual slavery? How can they justify that?)
Thank you so much for the article. I love it whenever articles about older actors and actresses like this pops up on MDL. Coincidentally, I've never seen any of this so I might check some of them out.
(Oh, and are those Kim Hee-ae and Han Suk-kyu I'm seeing on Sons and Daughters' montage? They look so young!)
