I found it to be a very enjoyable, entertaining melodrama. :) Can't take such absurd events and plots seriously (but I always find revenge absurd), but it was fun. I liked the Rex ladies' behind the scenes plotting, and I loved the fact that it was a short drama. No boring side characters with plotlines of their own = no dragging. I liked that both the male leads were nice, kind guys and I don't think they lacked chemistry. The only thing I wish was different is that the FL could have been... smarter, I guess. Then again, she was probably supposed to be this kind, innocent "ordinary" woman caught up in the rich people's web of power and wealth. What's with that last scene though? If there's a second season coming, I'll watch it. Everything was wrapped up nicely, it felt like a teaser...
Wow, you have spent a lot of hard work on this article! It was interesting and fun to read. I'm always amused by drama titles. One that I have noticed that I don't get is "For Married Doctress"... it seems like one word (or more) is missing.
I just watched it, and I agree with every word. I only watched it for Fujiki Naohito and didn't expect much from it, but I'm glad it was cute. As someone who had a beloved cat companion for almost 19 years, I'm glad Pete the cat got a long life. :)
+100% agreed. It's why I prefer the J-version of some dramas like the Japanese ver of Signal over the Korean one.…
Yes, Signal was good - I haven't watched the K version. (To be honest, I also wouldn't watch a Japanese remake of a k-drama I have already watched, even if it would be more focused. If there are two versions of something that I haven't watched yet and I have access to both, I would watch the Japanese one though.)
I think even many shorter k-dramas (16 episodes) would benefit from having fewer and shorter episodes - like a j-drama. I often think this, and most of the time it's because of side characters and/or scenes that are too long, and/or scenes that are repetitive or just seem unnecessary.
So happy that someone also enjoyed The Disguiser. It was freaking awesome..
If your're curious, and if you like republican era dramas, you should give it a try. I don't remember enough details to write about it, but I remember that there were many things I liked about it. I know that at the time, some people complained a bit about the romance (there were two female characters, and many preferred one over the one that became the love interest) but I didn't have a problem with it. I liked many of the characters and I remember being all "oooh, what's going to happen now!?!" It was pretty violent at times though, and there was some tragedy.
This is a well-written article, good job. :) "Historical C-drama watchers rather see flying people with supernatural powers." Yeah, that is probably very true for most people! Personally, I feel the opposite way, though. I don't think there was ever a time in human history where people actually could fly and have supernatural powers, and therefore I consider those dramas fantasy. Obviously, most people put them in the same category because the setting is definitely not modern. I get that... and I might watch dramas with time travel and minor fantastical elements and still call them "historical" but when there are demons and gods and other immortal beings, definitely not (even though I loved Tribes and Empires!). And I like Republican era dramas (even though the one I'm currently watching, The Justice, is pretty boring.)
My personal favourites are: 1. Nirvana In Fire 2. Battle of Changsha 3. Sound of the Desert 4. Story of Yanxi Palace 5. The Rebel Princess 6. Scarlet Heart 7. The Story of Minglan 8. The Disguiser 9. Sparrow 10. Winter Begonia
My actual top 10 list has a few k-dramas and j-dramas too.
Everyone is talking about how the mystery is predictable, but if you actually watch dramas just to turn off your…
Yeah, I know... I think many people focused on that aspect because they expected the drama to be more like a thriller, when it's more like a melodrama about things like motherhood, sibling rivalry, friendship, etc, with a mystery thrown in. :) "Thriller" is listed as one of the genres so I guess that's why, but I enjoyed it a lot for what it was.
I love this drama very much. It is definitely a bit heavy and talks about serious issues like mental health. It…
I agree, the more I watched, the more my heart was breaking for LX. His mother should have gotten professional help 20 years ago... but yeah, it was clear from how they were all talking in the last episodes, that if mental health problem is a taboo subject now, it must have been even more so back when LX was a kid and all that happened to his family.
Yes, it was well-balanced... I find that when c-dramas get it right, they really get it right!
I just completed it and I liked it a lot. There is just one thing I don't understand, and that is why some people call it a romcom (it even has "comedy" and "romance" as genres). Sure, there are both sweet and funny moments, but it's not like every episode is hilarious, and the romance part of it isn't the main thing at all. I sometimes found this painful and almost difficult to watch because of the heavy topics and the deep emotional scars some of the characters have to deal with. This drama is full of broken and/or complicated family relationships. And yet it is full of love, warmth and healing! Li Haichao is simply amazing as a father and a person. For me, this drama is just as heartbreaking as it's heartwarming, and the combination makes it very fulfilling to watch. A nice slice of life!
It was a while ago, I admit, but I liked SH a lot.
