Historical romances are probably my favorite genre. Another really great one is The Story of Ming Lan. It's more of a slow-burn, so it takes a little while for the story to really pick up, but it's so worth it.

The Story of Ming Lan has some incredibly well written dialogue. While some of it can be lost in translation (the ancient Chinese sure loved poetry), most of it still holds up.

We all thought there would only be three seasons but it is definitely not finished. If you don't want to be left with a cliffhanger, don't watch it. However, it is a fantastic show.

Her agency is super fishy though. I really hope it is her own choice to not film and not that she's being controlled :/

Oh definitely. Every other actor who was in a hit show this year has been signed on for other projects but all she's been doing are reality shows/photo shoots. If she's really in this drama then I'm happy, but how she went from her killer performance as the lead in GMP to this supporting role I'll never understand. She deserves way better.

Yang Zi and Kris Wu are cool and everything, but I'm just really hoping Peng Xiao Ran will have a significant role here. She hit it out of the park in GMP, I'm dying to see her in a new project.

The ML here is wayyy less mean than Naoki. You can clearly see that he likes her and isn't a complete prick to her all of the time. Also Xiao Xi isn't nearly as big of an idiot as Kotoko is and she does have a backbone. It isn't the most healthy relationship depiction, nor is the FL the strongest woman in the world but it is an adorable lighthearted watch. Infinitely better than Itazura na Kiss imo.

I'm a few episodes in and I'm wondering how the show manages to redeem the husband enough to make everyone in the comments ship him and the FL so bad. As of now, I hate that prick. This show makes me so mad. The acting's good and it's interesting, but I am so pissed when I watch it I don't know if I can keep going lol.

This show is incredible. The best k drama I've ever seen. I need them to make more, hopefully it did well in Korea.

Luo Luo in Fighter of the Destiny. She's the best second female lead I've seen in a drama. She was so funny, sweet, and selfless. It doesn't help that the adorable Wu Qian played the role, but man did it hurt. I've never read the novel so my dumb ass was hoping the whole time that she was going to end up with the ML, was I ever disappointed.

No apology but he definitely regretted what he had done and attempted to repent afterwards. I don't agree with OP about Hua Qian Gu forgiving him though. Qian Gu wished she had never fallen for him in the end.

I'm so happy to see Journey of Flower! I haven't seen anyone mention it in so long and I absolutely love it -- minus the terrible cuts and them basically making Qian Gu's rad "curse" on Bai Zi Hua in the end meaningless. But Hua Qian Gu definitely deserves to be on this list. She endured the worst trials I've seen in a drama.

I would add Xiao Feng from Goodbye My Princess to the list. That poor girl went through so much, her comeback unfortunately wasn't the greatest though lol :'(

I love the second male lead and the kids. A lot of people in the comments of the show are really annoyed by the kids, but I think they're forgetting the fact that they're, you know, kids. I find them all endearing in their own way. I have no clue why the rating went down to 7.9 when it's not even finished airing yet, but as of episode 7 I'm still really liking it.

Worse. It's a reverse-harem with three dudes pining after the female lead and the second and third male leads are infinitely better than the male lead in my opinion.

Not really so far (ep 9). There's potential though between the leads, at least it seems like the ML may like the FL.

But I find Ling Xi to be unique in that she is selfish. She's not masked as some righteous little spitfire who's against injustice like the typical noisy female lead you mentioned.

You initially said she's a spoiled brat and I concur. And I actually like it tbh. There are really people like her. It shows that although she has MANY flaws she also has good qualities and I'm sure as the show progresses she will have to mature.

But this is just my personal take. You're totally entitled to your opinion, I was just showing the other side of the spectrum.

She's definitely not the only one at all. I agree with OP. Ling Xi isn't perfect and I'm glad she's not. I'm tired of saintly female leads that writers put on some stupid purity pedestal. She's neither entirely good nor entirely bad. You may find her annoying but many of us enjoy her character.

You are seriously good at writing. The show wasn't my personal favorite tbh. But it was filled with memorable characters and you summed them up perfectly, especially Run Yu. I am on Team Run Yu but that never meant I wanted him and Jin Mi to end up together. His character was just exceptional. Really wasn't fair what they kept doing to the poor soul.
