I love this drama but this is one of the things that bothered me about it. It's never explained why everyone magically knows sign language. The audience is supposed to just accept it, I guess.
cuz we all know The Untamed was a monumental failure of a drama
I haven't seen much "Mary Sue" calling from C-drama fans but I've seen the double standards you mentioned.
Male leads tend to get far more leeway than female leads when it comes to character flaws and making human mistakes. The general audience will happily excuse any bad behaviour (e.g. lying, manipulating other people, acting like a rude asshole, even murder) that male leads show whereas female leads are strongly condemned for the same or similar actions.
The ML or SML (second male lead) aka the Fandom Favourite can do no wrong, it's always someone else's fault. Sometimes, they'll even hate on male characters who get in the way of the ML or SML, lol!
I've watched a few historical C-dramas where, for example, ML and FL both lie and keep important things hidden from each other that leads to misunderstandings in their relationship. It's a bit cliche but still a perfectly normal plot development. And guess which one the majority of the audience almost always chooses to criticize and hate on for "creating stupid misunderstandings"? It's so predictable by now that I don't even need to scroll down to the viewer comments anymore to see their reactions.

I think my personal opinion is actually closer to yours. I was just trying to explain why some people might be hesitant to watch dramas without FLs or major female characters and that I can understand their POV.
To me, though, a well-written plot and characterizations are more important than whatever gender or actor/actress is casted. I like it when I can tell that the director, scriptwriter, editors and actors genuinely cared about making a good and enjoyable drama instead of a quick buck.

The Untamed still had pretty cool female characters in supportive roles and it worked. When this drama airs, we'll see how it treats its female cast.
Some people want major female characters because it makes a story more realistic and true to real life, and because they're female viewers who want to see cool women on screen. I can understand that. Maybe the user you replied to thinks that way and that's why she's disappointed there's no FL.
Except she believed in the bad guy and stabbed our Ml lol
It wouldn't be a xianxia romance without some misunderstandings between the lead characters 😁 And I posted my comment when I only finished around 10 episodes. At that time, I didn't know what would happen later in the plot.
The production quality is so bad, it's unwatchable. The editing is all over the place and the sound mixing doesn't seem right. There are far better short C-dramas out there.
I'm not that far into watching this, but genuine question... I agree the actor playing ML is hot, but how come…
You're not wrong but I'm sure many viewers are aware that his behaviour wouldn't be acceptable and even off-putting in real life. We just enjoy him as a fictional character, a guilty pleasure. This type of male lead used to be really popular in Chinese and Korean dramas for a reason.
LOL nah it's more because both are abusive to each other, except the male lead also protects her (even taking…
If the person you're replying to has a double standard, then you also have one. You have decided to take the male lead's side while she takes the female lead's side. You see the story through the male lead's eyes while she's being understanding of the female lead's actions and thoughts. It's just a matter of perspective.
I'm only around 10 episodes in but I'm loving the relationship between Sifeng and Xuanji so far!
This is one of the few romance dramas where I can totally see why the male lead falls for the female lead and where both leads have an equal give-and-take relationship. Xuanji defends Sifeng in front of their elders, tries to understand him and cheer him up, doesn't hesitate to tell him that she cares about him and stays behind to protect him. It's only natural that he takes a liking towards her.
In comparison, many romance stories revolve around male leads doing everything while the female lead only receives which always leaves me a bit unsatisfied. I want to see women defending their men too, lol.
To anyone still visiting this page: Take this with a grain of salt but I found a Twitter fan account for Tim Pei who plays the male lead. It was in Japanese which I can't understand, so I used Google Translate.
She posted (leaked?) screencaps of this drama in July 2022 and mentioned kissing scenes, that's why I'm guessing it has already finished filming. It just hasn't aired yet.
fed up of this hate train for the female lead. you people want a perfect character with no flaws who always makes…
I find it kind of funny that many C-drama watchers want perfect, strong female leads who never make mistakes, never act dumb, always do the right thing in the right moment and only have acceptable flaws. Because people in other fandoms call such female characters "Mary Sues" or criticize them for being unrealistically written overpowered self-inserts 🤣 But it seems most of the C-drama fandom actually wants to see more of this kind of female lead 🤷♀️
