I think the reason it worked so well without a kiss is because the shiw treated their characters maturely. Their interactions were always laced with a sexual undertone, and the show didn't shy away from that. There was no "childish shyness" from the leads.

I understand this. I don't like her characters in modern dramas either, (I feel like she plays childish roles) but her historicals and xianxia are good.

Funny, you say that. Personally, I think that SOKP is Zhang Ling He BEST performance as an actor. To me, it's his performance in this show that made him finally shed that "pretty boy" image and became a real actor in my eyes.
It's that performance that made me finally started looking for him as an actor, and looking forward to his other shows. I think he's a good actor and all the other scripts before SOKP didn't give him the chance to showcase his acting. Thank god for SOKP

Unfortunately, there is no other word to describe this show other than boring. The plot is just blah. There's nothing interesting or enticing enough happening at any given moment.
Don't get me wrong, a lot happens within an episode, but the way it's told/shown, without much excitement, makes it seem like nothing is happening at all. I love the characters, but they are just not well written. Their reactions to things are just not well written. The actors did a good job though, given what they had to work with. Sigh.
The writers really dropped the ball on this. Maybe one day I will come back to it.
But again, don't forget, this is a personal preference. You might like the show if you give it a chance.

One thing I love about this drama is that nothing is there without a reason. Every side plot adds to the main plot, even if not immediately revealed. Just be patient and keep watching. It will all make sense to you and you will end up loving the Ye family!
