I actually teared up at the bond between 3rd Sis and her stepdaughter. 🥹 The way her stepdaughter worried about her standing in the rain was such a small but touching moment. It really shows that 3rd Sis must have treated her with genuine love and care, like she was her own daughter.
3rd sis, Lady Marquis' hair is interesting. It reminds me of three temples on her head. Also, if 3rd sis is 26 already then how old is LX? Even though 3rd bro can be childish and seemingly lacking in booksmart and street smart and ambition, I actually appreciate that he’s self-aware enough to recognize that his official position was largely thanks to LJQ's connection, rather than something he earned entirely on his own merit.
I honestly thought he might resent LJQ for losing his position, but instead, he seems to understand where LJQ is coming from. For someone who can be rather clueless at times, that little bit of self-awareness and loyalty is touching.
It really does make one wonder about the value of holding an official court or government position when titles can be handed out so freely. Unlike LJQ, who had to earn his position through merit and struggle, it seems the king is now willing to reward anyone who finds the right cricket.
When officials and nobles start competing to curry favour with eunuchs, it’s hard not to wonder whether merit has taken a back seat to flattery. A rather unfortunate state of affairs for any court.
Kissing aside, episode 39 is still brilliantly directed and written. What makes this drama compelling isn’t the consummation of the leads’ marriage, but the shifting power within the court and LJQ’s growing realization of what it has become.

They have become the intermediary between the ruler and those who serve him,able to suppress communication or manipulate what reaches the throne.
That is what makes the situation so unsettling. Officials and generals who once held real authority have been reduced to pawns, while the palace itself has become hollowed out by those who control access to power. LJQ recognizes this decay, and perhaps more importantly, realizes that remaining within the court no longer serves any purpose.

In the novel, I find that fl gave up and was whithered down by ml's posession, love, attention. Also society's expectation and all sorts of things. Ml definitely loved her more. There was a phrasein the novel, he said to her "Even if you don't love me, that's ok. I have more than enough love for the both of us". That's when she confessed that she also loved him. But it was not the exciting passionate love, but more of being willing to accept him and their marriage. Her personality in the novel was always very restrained and subdued. Very quiet, sometimes too calm. Sometimes, when ml can't get the attention or reaction he wants from her he becomes either angry or desperate. It was definitely an interesting read.

Don't get me wrong, Ep 39 was good too. I liked the politics and LJQs innter struggle to come to his own resolution. The courage he had to muster to give up his power. I also enjoyed the couple back at LX's adopted parents home. It was so natural, the Xu parents sat down first instead of waiting for LJQ to sit. Shows LJQ vists his inlaws a lot and everyone is now very comfortable with each other. the Xu couple now sees LJQ as their daughter's lover and their SIL. It's quite nice too see that tidbit of their daily lives. It would've been perfect if they did a bit more of the kiss, even 10sec more I would've been more satisfied haha. I do understand the director had more direction of what their consummating meant. I just need to understand it, I'm aware it meant their paths, ideals, body and soul now align.
