My first rewatch in a long time... I'd forgotten how much the mis-cast FL ruins the show. She's not a good enough actress here to be a part of that cast. Compared to everyone else, she's overacting and it sucks. So does her tragic haircut. And she eats like a trucker for some reason I don't understand. I get that Koreans eat with a lot of gusto, but girl. Are you literally starving and homeless rn. And in a few scenes her posture is so bad. So you've got this pinheaded juvvenile overacting FL with TERRIBLE posture who SHOVELS food in her face and has the most unfortunate bowl haircut I've ever seen. Just why. There are some scenes - including a kiss scene - where the combination of bad haircut, bad posture, and awkward facial expressions makes her look LITERALLY like a retarded person.
The Korean version slaughters the story as well. One of the coolest parts about watching BoF is watching the nanny lay the smack down on ML's mom. That part is totally written out. 2ML is given way way too much screentime. 2FL who's about to marry ML waits to the very last second to call it off, which is totally unnecessary to the story and makes her look like sort of a bad person when the original character isn't a bad person and isn't that stupid. ML is supposed to be very volatile and a little bit dumb, they also took most of that out of ML's character here.
But I'd just emphasize over all the gaping flaws, the absolute biggest flaw is the FL, who is so so horrible here.
This had a lot of the elements that imo make a good drama... good soundtrack/ost that wasn't intrusive, aesthetic and style were fine, side-plots kept me from skipping because they were interesting. The FL is pretty and relatable. The ML is handsome.
There were a few glaring flaws that made me give it a 6.5... Firstly, the angst lasts nearly the entire show. The ML and FL don't get together until the last episode or two. And they put the audience through torture getting there. Hours and hours of torture. Secondly, there is ONE kiss scene. One. And it's not a screen-scorcher, it's very average. Thirdly and most importantly, I don't feel ANY chemistry between the ML/FL, and Gong Yoo is supposed to be playing a highschooler but it isn't convincing at all. He's just too old here for the part. This is supposed to be "forbidden love", but I don't feel anything from the actors that support that plot dynamic. This is the main reason I gave it a lower score.
I was ready to get all wrapped up in this drama, and then in episode 6 the FL cuts all her hair off, and spends the rest of the show wearing a boy-cut. I know that because I skipped to the last 10 mins of the last episode to check.
It looks absolutely awful, I'm peacing out on this one.
This was absolutely terrible. I HAAATE the FL so much, she's a bitter dried up old bish, she screams a LOT, and I mean like a horrible ear-splitting scream, everyone cries from beginning to end, there is ZERO kilig, ZERO spice, ZERO romance. This is a straight clean unrelenting tragedy. Ugh.
But you gave TTEOM a 9. And she's constantly trying to kill the ML in that one too! :P
Lolling rn... dude the only thing truly good about The Long Ballad was HAOOOO DUUUUUUUUUUU!!!! If that story was just The Long Ballad Of Hao Du, I'd probably give it a 9, but there was all this other boring stuff in there so I just couldn't. Descendants of the Sun had a distinct lack of spice component, and not enough side-character funnyness like CLOY. I found it to be average. Love is sweet was totally stupid except for that kiss in front of the apartment weeeewwww that was truly a great kiss scene. But they put her in that stupid brown leather jacket through half the show, didn't make her look as sexy as she can look, and the plot was so boring!!! Like dude, I don't care about your business reports or when they're due. I just so don't.
Did you see I trashed Love o2o too... and gave The Rose like a 9 or something. The Rose features an ML who CANNOT ACT AT ALL. Why'd I give it a 9? I don't know that show just thrilled me to no end. I mean the ML and 2ML are HOT, they're all siblings, the ML kisses his own sister on the mouth the first day she arrives, then he gets in bed with the FL every time he gets drunk which is like every night, the gay brother who dresses like the ML's dead wife to get him interested, and who also kisses his own brother every now and then for no reason, suddenly turns not-gay over a little plain chubby girl he affectionately calls "Little Meat Bun"!!! The high drama of the last 2 episodes? ---> How she can lose enough weight to fit into her wedding dress! Now THAT'S entertainment right there.
I also gave I Love My President Though He's a Psycho a 9. That's right, a NINE.
So obviously I'm crazy, kekekekeke....
What I'm looking for in a drama isn't "quality" in the conventional sense. I just want excitement, ridiculousness, drama, and SPICE SPICE SPICE.
Like take the Long Ballad for instance. ML FL? No spice! Where's the spice?!? I must have it. Dilraba, she has no chemistry with this man at all. Usually imo Dilraba doesn't have chemistry with her ML. Every now and then she does, like ELOD was kind of fiery, I liked her in that. And also... the ML has no lips. He looks like a bird, he's kinda weird and goofy lookin. They should have cut all that stuff out and just made the whole thing about Hao Du and Lu Si.
But no, obvs this is not anywhere near like TTEOM, at least we both agree that show was sheer badassery. Man, when he tried to die next to her by setting the bed on fire, my eyes were like saucers and my jaw was on the floor and I was like "THIS IS THE BEST DRAMA EVARRR!" I do hate how mean she was to him though. I understand it was part of the plot, but it was so hard to watch, aiyaa. Sure I think they're ultr-cute-hot together, but Love is Sweet, I just can't get over that dumb brown jacket.
This is one of those dramas for feminists... she's a strong, swarthy independent military woman who acts like a caricature of a man. He is a pale, wafish pretty boy courtesan. The dynamic between them is atrocious to me, very role-reversal. She does the prude-kissing that wrecks kiss-scenes. So so terrible.
Ughhhh FL is one of those "sit there and do nothing" kissers in the kiss scenes, this suxxxxx. The plot is creative though, I kind of liked it. The ML was not bad. But that FL ruined everything, she's not letting any chemistry happen between them as actors. I can't stand it when the FL actress is being such a prude about kissing. If you're just that traumatized by kissing onscreen, then dont take friggin FL roles ffs!!!
There is also plenty of typical chinese tragi-fashion in this one too, just to be aware of.
Average in just about every way. Lee Si Eon is difficult for me to watch in anything, and he's given a lot of screen time in this. I dislike how he overacts enough to make every scene he's in all about him. He's hammy. On top of being hammy, he's awkward looking and I don't find his antics particularly funny. The best part about this drama was the FL. I had seen her in Born Again and didn't like her in that role, but here she was good.
So I was watching this when DramaFever exploded (RIP) so I picked it up again now. I am rewatching the first 8…
I hate her in everything i've seen her in. Her voice is awful, she looks terrible with short hair, and there's something about her face like I can imagine exactly what she will look like when she's 70 years old, and I can't unsee it.
