I've seen so many dramas I can't count them all, from all over the world. And I have to say, every now and then a c-drama comes out that displays the most stunning and masterful grasp of human psychology... I think the best part of this drama is this black-belt level understanding of psychology, and the respect it shows for the fact that we're all different and we've all been through different things and that our past affects our present mindset... and our present mindset affects our views of our past.
As far as in-depth and realistic psychological content.... this is drama would be in my top all-time 20 "smartest" dramas ever.
Proving once again that china is the undisputed heavyweight champ of drama.
When I watched HL I felt Victor Ma's portrayal of SY not the real SY because he was too high energy, understandable…
why isn't it okay to compare? Jing Ting did an amazing job. They're both good actors, why not compare? I mean they both played the same character, so of course it's natural to think of them both AS that character.
I watch shows to the end that I don't like all the time. I do it so I can say "I've seen that." And also sometimes…
I keep watching Kai's dramas because I've seen him act really REALLY well in the past, and I am rooting for him to grow as an actor, but he seems, at least right now... and at least to me... like he's topped out and this is the best youre gonna get out of him, idk. I feel like he's not being cast with FL's that are complimentary to him, and just imo only I feel like he keeps getting cast for roles that don't let him shine in what he's really good at. I think he's really bad at CEO, and really good at demon-child chained up in a cave by his father for 100 years or whatever. He should play a merman or a baby dragon that just hatched or something innocent and mysterious and magical. Not an effing pencil pusher in a suit or some swashbuckler tough warrior type.
They needed an A-list actor and Victor Ma is still not a prominent actor he is C-list no offense, also they needed…
I can see not casting him because of his hi-energy, but I think it suxx that he mightve been skipped over because of lack of experience... his acting stood up very very well against some of the best in the business in HE, and I was shocked at how little experience he had because he has so much natural talent, I'd love to see that encouraged more for him. I think he could learn a lot really fast.
I watch shows to the end that I don't like all the time. I do it so I can say "I've seen that." And also sometimes…
I liked Victor Ma's sudden serious flashes where you would see the depth of his character, but they were few and far between, he's not lowkey.
Ya for me it's like "Gotta watch 'em all" lol.... some of the best shit can be hidden in some of the worst dramas. Plus even when I don't like a show, sometimes I like watching actors progress in their careers.
On this one, I have to admit I was only hooked into it because Edward Chen <3 <3 <3 He was so excellent in Lesson In Love that I was like "okayyy I'll take this drama seriously...."
He wasn't the right cast for the love story part I my opinion, like am watching HL and I like his comedic side…
like scheduling conflicts or something like that? Ya, it's weird how VM would have brought a completely different energy to the part. IDK if it would have worked or not.
exactly, i dont even waste my time and bother if i dont like a drama but people make a big deal out of something…
I almost never drop. When i finish something I didn't like, I want to vent about it too. Comments sections aren't fan pages. If someone doesn't like it, big deal. Let them vent, who cares.
My mentality is if I start a drama, by god imma finish it. It's just personality types are sometimes not all the same.
I have already watched my favorite scenes multiple times and for some reason I started over. It is amazing how…
I think for me, it was hard to get into this drama at first because the FL is really closed off and emotionally flat, so I don't relate to her very well. But I just let it go and kept watching and I'm glad I did because this was good art. But the FL might turn people off like she did with me.
She also lies. And that bothered me. But it's easy to see once you know whats up with the story, that she only lies to avoid ONE THING, and if it's about anything else, she actually doesn't lie. That adds such an incredible dimension to her character, and I think Ruo Nan portrayed her very well. She's not my favorite actress, but by the time the show was over, I asked myself "what actress could have acted that better" and no one springs to mind. In fact I can think of a lot of actress who would have completely effed it up, lol.
I just finished this and gave it an 8.5 (but I am a wicked hard grader, for me 8.5 is "pretty effin good".)
So I want to ask just for the purposes of bantz only: What do you think this would have turned out like with Victor Ma?
I was so pissed about the casting that I wanted to hate this drama, and I couldn't because it's legit very good. I mean I'm torn. On the one hand, ML was very good. On the other hand, the ML was not Victor Ma. It hurts my brain.
I'm on episode 14, and I agree so far. At the moment, it's not progressing, but it's still keeping me interested.…
IMO skip away. Even with skipping, this will still translate well and still be a good watch. Don't torture yourself, there's no reason for it. Go ahead and skip grandpa, we know you want to ;)
Why do people keep watching a drama they clearly donโt enjoy instead of just dropping it? This one is a slow…
I watch shows to the end that I don't like all the time. I do it so I can say "I've seen that." And also sometimes when you stick with a show, it can surprise you, you never know. There are so many dramas where I thought it was shit, and then there's some scene that sticks with me forever that makes me glad I kept going. And then, other shows just don't pan out for you. There are several shows I watched to the end, and got lit up by rabid fans for not liking. I didn't like AJTL. I didn't like LYF. I didn't like L&P. I haven't liked any of Kai's dramas that have come out recently.
I did like this one though. Wew lad!
It's not my type of drama at ALL. I'm PISSED OFF about Victor Ma getting screwed out of the role for this. But all that notwithstanding.... I recognize this as artistic genius.
I've seen like 300-400 dramas idk.... and I've dropped around 10-20, ever. I never drop unless it is just *unspeakably* bad.
Even though, I love BJT and he looks stunning in the drama.. I stopped the drama after halfway of the series.I'm…
In this sense, it is true to life though. He is hung up on her and never got over her because of her physical beauty. All the way through the end they show this side of him, but that's how men are generally biologically hardwired. Her beauty didn't just attract ML though... it also attracted predatory men who hurt her. This is also true to life, it's not any easier to be beautiful than it is to be ugly. It comes with it's own problems. This show portrays those problems without much of a filter, which is part of why this is a badass show. It's not moralizing. It's showing everyone "As Is".
Since you dropped, you don't see his character arc where he realizes he's a dipshit for just seeing her as a pretty girl, and he starts making *actual* effort to know all about her. He's still attracted to her beauty by the end, but he's also attracted to HER, and his love gains a lot of dimension that it didn't start out with.
Episode 13, the SML is speaking with the FL disrespecting the ML behind his back telling her "you deserve a better…
You'll find as you watch, that she "should" do a lot of stuff that she doesn't do, and the story is her workin' it out. She's a flawed character, so she will piss you off or frustrate you at times, but she figures her shit out in the end. Worth the emotional investment imo.
I must be the only one that find this extremely slow and repetitive. Felt like I was watching the same scenes…
I just finished it. The pace was a little too slow for me, but I could see while I was watching it that 1) some people like that pace, and for those people this was a 'perfect' drama because slower paced dramas are generally shit, and the ones that are good are few and far between... and 2) the pacing - while too slow for me - was deliberate and poetic... it matched the themes of the show. Between all the repetition that was going on, was also some deep psychology.
One of the things I find unique and cool about this drama is that it is skippable and 2Xable to whatever level you desire, and you still get the pull of the show, the powerful scenes don't lose impact and the characters and story don't suffer from skipping. So what you get out of this show is what you put into this show, it's really flexible for different styles of viewers.
First Frost would have cruised above 9.1 without breaking a sweat if not for such pathetic people..
DramaTears has just explained to me what the struggle session is for, because that profile has a high chance of being a bot. So I owe you a big apology
*****I AM SO SORRY I AM AN ASSHOLE, I WAS WRONG, YOU WERE RIGHT*****
And I will leave our conv and my apology up to prove that I'm entirely willing to make myself look like an idiot as a way of being sorry for not understanding the full picture. Unless you'd rather me take the conv down... in which case I will. Up to you.
Again, I am a moron and I'm very sorry. I had no idea this kind of thing happens with shows when they air where you have to deal with bot-campaigns and "fan wars". I have never heard of such shit, but it makes sense.
That's instant karma, where I'm like "Id be embarrassed if I were you" and then immediately was embarrassed by what I said to you!!!! Shit man lol....
omg thank you so much for a normal-person answer.... I take back everything I said, but I'll leave it up so other people can see that answer you just gave me.
Now it all makes sense to me... I really appreciate you taking the time to ELI5. I am sorry I went off without knowing the full story.
Do you think that user is a bot or something? I think their profile looks normal enough, they just make subjective reviews with shit-takes on stuff they don't like. Is there more to this that I'm not getting?
I think it's worth more than a 1 too, but why would you go through and try to struggle session someone just because you don't agree with the way they rated it?

I would love it if you *could* counter it. It sucks that some superfans of some shows are so rude and mean. I just don't think that people who act like you guys, making personal attacks on others simply for their opinion of a show, should come to expect that you can just say whatever you want about whoever you want without any pushback.
You can say whatever you want, i cant and wouldn't stop you.... but if you are gonna say whatever you want about whoever you want, then so will I. And my opinion is that I can't believe you're not embarrassed to act that way, because I would be. Just sayin.
