I saw some posts on Weibo. Some inside people said the drama actually only presented 50% of what is in the script. The production team could not get enough budget since Youku did not really have much expectation and did not pay much attention to this drama at the very beginning. The production team did amazing job with very limited budget. Imagine what they can do if they get a full budget. But again, if the production is on the spotlight from the beginning, we might not get Xiao Chu, a rookie script writer as the main script writer, ZZH as ZZS and GJ as WKX. Such a dilemma!

The popularity of WOH is not simply because of its BL/bromance contents. Its intriguing plot, interesting characters and beautiful choreograph attract a big group of Wu Xia fans. Then there are a lot of female fans who are not really into BL but are deeply affected by the equal and mature relationship of the two leads.
The C-drama land is filled with stereotyped pretty, innocent but stupid female leads who keep getting herself into troubles and need the help from the male leads again and again, or cliche cold, loofy and bossy male leads who torture the FL because of some stupid and unnecessary misunderstanding, or beautiful female supporting roles who has no better things to do other than frame the FLs and be clingy to the MLs. Gosh!
Finally there is one drama which comes from a female novel writer, a female script writer and a female producer who fully understand what female audience want about relationships. The love between the two MLs is beyond gender. This kind of relationship is the ultimate dream for many people, no matter they are into BL, GL or BG. That's why WOH is so popular in China. If it is only about BL, there won't be nearly 300k voters on Douban.

And not all female fans are BL fans. For a lot of female fans, it is maybe one of the very few c dramas which present an equal and mature relationship. Finally no pretty, innocent but stupid female leads who either chase after loofy male lead or are saved from her trouble by the ML again and again. Also maybe because the script writer and producer are both female, there are no annoying side female roles who cat fight each other over to just get attention of other male roles. Hurrah!!!

BL fans and Wu Xia fans. It did very well as a Wu Xia drama. A lot of Wu Xia fans are hooked and praise it as one of the best Wu Xia dramas in recent years. Saw quite some posts sharing how their male friends, parents and even professors are watching WOH.

On Douban if the number of voters is so less like 26k, the high rating does not mean it is popular in China or reflect the real quality of the drama but only means it is well received in a small circle. High rating + high number of voters = successful drama on Douban.

Totally. I read somewhere. The director talked about these two actors. ZZH teased GJ a lot behind the scenes. GJ was unable to tease back against the troll king in the real life then he ended up enjoying so much teasing ZZS in the shooting because ZZH could not tease him back because of his character. That's why there is so much sizzling chemistry between them. :-D Of course ZZH did find some chances to tease back. The famous line interchange in ep3 "is it pretty? Perfect" is the result. It is not in the script. ZZH just could not resist to fight back and GJ responsed perfectly in the WKX character. They are really two very good actors.

WKX is an intriguing character. He's both- bad and good. It can be confusing in the beginning. I think it is better to just let it go, watch the unfolding of stories and judge it later on your own. :-)
BTW, it's ghost valley not ghost realm. This is a Wu Xia drama, so there are no ghosts, immortals or magic inside. Ghosts in the story just refer to the outcasters and criminals of that world. They have nowhere to go like ghost which could not walk under the sun. They hang out together to stay against the so called righteous side of Jianghu(the martial arts world). They are more loosely structured, unlike the assasin organization. I enjoyed the story of the characters of the ghost valley more than of the righteous side. Especially after I saw netizen in China call the ghost valley the cosplay fan club because of their exaggerating makeups, especially the eyeliners and lipsticks on the male ghosts. :-D
