Once again Netflix really messed up translating an important sentence in a kdrama. At the end of episode 10 Netflix mistranslated what the king said to Ji Yeong. The English translation read “ be my companion” which is not correct. What he actually said to her was “be my life partner.” In other words, be my equal, walk beside me the rest of our days.
Here’s a link to an excellent explanation of what the king actually said. It also includes some important background details of the scene that many viewers probably missed. The explanation is long but it’s well worth reading.
Netflix has had poor translations for a long time but they need to do better. Some of their mistranslations make a huge impact in how vital dialogue in a drama is understood.
BAYM was 😭not promoted as a romcom, the trailer also has more emphasis on her cooking, in the leads promotion…
Not everyone reads the manhwa or novel that a drama is based upon. Not every drama follows the original written work exactly. A drama is watched or rated on what it delivers, not what some other work delivered. And no, not everyone wants romance.
Again, I didn’t say BAYM is a poorly acted drama. I find it quite entertaining. I’m sure some people began watching BAYM expecting a romance and were disappointed. Some people didn’t even start the drama because they saw romance and that’s not the genre that they like.
All I’m saying is that the entertainment industry needs to be more honest in their promotions.

I feel it doesn’t help your argument to point out that other popular kdramas misrepresented what their drama was actually about. Dramas shouldn’t try to attract viewers by calling it a romance if it’s not. Advertise a drama for what it actually is.

The official Netflix Philippines trailer that was posted on yt about 4 weeks ago called it “a delightful survival romance.” (Check the clip around 3:50.) I think you even linked to that trailer a few days ago.
I feel the MDL Romance genre tag should have been removed and a Food genre tag should have been added in its place.
A romance genre focuses on the developing relationship of two main characters and the progression of their love. This is the 3rd so called romance kdrama in the past two months that doesn’t fit that standard classical definition. My Lovely Journey, Beyond the Bar, and BAYM all were promoted/advertized as romances but didn’t deliver on that aspect. People wouldn’t be complaining or trying to explain why the drama had little to no romance if Romance wasn’t listed in the promos and MDL genre tags.
I’m really loving BAYM, but this kdrama shouldn’t have been promoted as a romance when it’s basically a one sided love relationship.
Should i watch it? Like what should i exepxt please tell. I have exams in 7 days so
Definitely watch it after your exams. The entire drama will be released by then and there should be a clear picture about the the full drama and the ending.

So why did you only give this drama review a one star? Your rating is misleading to people who are checking out the initial ratings for the show.
I rly don’t understand why they thought making a food contest with no neutral side judge was a good idea 😭😭…
The Ming envoy started the whole food rivalry by saying that Joseon food was inedible. I’m 100% certain that he wouldn’t accept anyone else but himself to be the judge during the contest. And of course he wouldn’t be a fair judge.
I dont think BAYM main plot was the romance imo, according to some people the romance in the novel was non existent,…
Maybe we will be surprised and the Mings won’t win. But either way, I think Prince Jesan and Mok Ju will become much bolder.
If the Mings win, the evil duo will try to stir up more resentment against the king trying to make it look like it was his fault that the high stakes competition was held in the first place. If Yi Jeong somehow wins the competition, the evil duo will be angry because their efforts to sabotage the competition failed and they will have to find other ways to attack the king, only now more openly.
We don’t know yet what effect the king’s grandmother will have in the outcome of the competition because of her letter to the Ming emperor.
We still have 1/3 of the drama left to resolve all of the various conflicts and tie up the loose ends. That should be enough time to reach a satisfactory ending without rushing. And my romantic heart still hopes that Ji Yeong falls for the king.

In episode 1 when Ji Yeong started reading the ancient book Mangunrok in the plane bathroom she first saw the recipes and asked herself “Is it a cookbook?” She kept paging through the ancient book and then read the first page. “My dearly beloved, if you were to read this someday, may you comeback to my side.” She then comments, “It’s a Joseon dynasty romance novel.”
In my opinion it’s fair to assume that there is both cooking and romance in this drama. There may not be equal parts of each, but this drama has both. Her cooking started out as the primary way she interacted with the king. And as you or someone else mentioned “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” 😀
People acting like Mr Queen is the OG/standard for every cooking or transmigration drama when it's not. I'm tired.…
If the screenwriter of Mr Queen thought BAYM was a copy or knockoff I’m sure lawsuits would have been filed by now. The two dramas do have some similarities but they also have major differences. It’s okay for people to prefer one drama over the other and it’s okay to like both. But they aren’t copies.
Personally I only made it through one episode of Mr Queen because I had difficulty accepting the male chef transmigrating into the Queen’s body. I also didn’t like the over the top visual comedy of Mr Queen. I saw a short clip of Mr Queen twirking (I don’t know or care which episode it was from) and knew right away that the drama wasn’t for me. That’s just my personal preference.
On the other hand I love the basic premise of BAYM where the female chef time travels in her own body back to around 1500 and has to deal with a so called tyrant king before she can go back to her own time. In this fictional drama the king is showing good character growth and it appears that Prince Jesan and Mok Ju were trying to drive the king mad so they could more easily overthrow him.
Are you the type of person who enjoys spoilers and trying to figure out the plot for each episode ahead of time?…
I usually try to avoid spoilers because in most types of dramas it ruins my enjoyment. I like to watch things from a fresh perspective, without any preconceived notions.
I knew the link you posted was a possible spoiler but clicked on the link anyway. 😀I guess I feel that the pace of BAYM has slowed down a little and I’m hoping to see something change. Sometimes something bad has to happen in a drama in order to get things moving. I’m still hoping for a positive ending.
(I was so disappointed by the last 2 episodes of When the Phone Rings. I couldn’t believe how a good drama could go downhill so quickly. What was the writer thinking to make so many poor choices?)
So this part might happen in ep 9 or 10 my girl does not deserve this type of hard adventure she was just minding…
Are you the type of person who enjoys spoilers and trying to figure out the plot for each episode ahead of time? Do you ever feel let down because the actual story doesn’t go in the same direction you predicted? I’m not saying that it’s wrong, I’m just curious.
A blind test should’ve been done in the competition. The voting is so unfair considering that both nations have…
In episode 7 they tried to kill the royal chef. Prince Jesan and Mok Ju both tried to sabotage the competition in different ways. There was no possibility that the competition would be fair because of the outside interferences.
Aww, the King got all teary eyed when he heard Ji Yeong mention her late mother when she was describing the beef dish. Our so called tyrant is a softy who still misses his mom. I hope he finds out the truth about his mother’s death and gains justice for her.
OMG YES!!! I totally agree with you.. mostly dramas with good cast and storyline are short now idk why is that…
Supposedly dramas are switching to the 12 episode format to meet audience demand for faster paced stories that have little filler material. Also because most people stream dramas the shorter format is thought to make it easier to binge watch and reduce fast forwarding.
In my opinion compromises are made when the length of dramas are reduced. There’s not as much time for in depth character development and the story often seems superficial and rushed.
I still prefer the 16 episode length for dramas. Unfortunately I’ve already seen some 8 episode dramas and that really scares me. I hope the trend doesn’t continue. I believe that as they continue to shorten the length of dramas they’re sacrificing quality.
