After reading up on the development and usage of "Taglish," the use of Tagalog and English together within conversation…
I think Taglish is natural in Manila, though you may be right that English may be seen as a language of higher prestige.
As a native speaker of Spanish, I am aware of code switching and the use of english by speakers of spanish.
If bilingual speakers didnt alternate between languages, would they be able to speak both languages well? Idk. In Puerto Rico ppl will speak English in the metro area mixed with their spanish and often the use of english has the same objective: to denote the intelligence and/or bilingualism of the speaker.
I dont mix my languages, but i have no problem with those who do.
Ep 4 was a big improvement - mostly because there was no Raynold Tan trying to be a bad boy. He's got smoldering…
No, the issue (for me at least) is not that he is the Uke (I am not even sure if he is) but that he is presented as a nerd and a super ace student who is also the school president or something. He is a rule follower. He is also in HS and most kids in Hs dont get tattos.
I was glad they addressed the issue directly in ep4 and tried to incorporate it into the character. They should have done that in ep1.
This low-budget series has much better acting (especially considering all 3 leads are rookies) and writing than…
My theory is that its Filipinos who are mostly critical of this series. I think its pretty good. The acting is passable, if maybe a bit inconsistent. The cinematography is excellent. I dont know why anyone would criticize the direction. This is no Gameboys but comapred to every other pinoy bl i have seen in the last 3 years, this is amazingly well done.
The only Filipino BL that I completed is Like in the Movies. I guess this will be the one that I can finish.
Could you help me understand why Taglish in Gameboys is not normal but here it is? I mean, the only difference I see is that in Gameboys, English words were peppered throughout the dialogue while here it seems that entire conversations are in English, with a few Tagalog words peppered in.

BTW My Story is not as bad as other Pinoy BL series I have watched, but please, don't judge Pinoy BL based on that series ;) or anything from Oxin Films.
Rainbow Prince was IMO one of the WORST series of the year. Maybe, it was the worst. :O
I can understand why some Filipinos can't watch Pinoy BL. The acting alone is subpar in most of them. The cinematography is crappy.
However, Gaya, Gameboys, Boys Lockdown and Meet Me Outside, are all exceptionally well made series. Gameboys in particular is miles above anything else I have seen from The Philippines. The originality of the premise alone deserves international accolades (and it has gotten a few awards I think). If you are Pinoy, you should be very proud of it. It is excellent and to boost, it is one of the few BLs available on Netflix here in the USA. :)

That is a weird reason to drop Gameboys. In this series they speak Taglish too, but you like it? How is the Taglish in Gameboys different from The Day I Loved You?
If I am not mistaken, certain characters in Gameboys used Taglish more than others and I think this was used to establish a class difference.
It is a shame you didn't finish it. I consider Gameboys one of the best BL series I have ever watched. Period. The episodes, The Elephant in The Room, and the series Finale, "Crossing The Line", rank among the very best episodes I have ever watched of any series, in any language, BL or not. It is that good. The acting is sublime. Elijah and Kokoy are miles above anyone in Thailand with maybe one or two exceptions (Fourth, Ohm, Nanon, and the likes).
Boys Lockdown is also one of my favorite Pinoy BLs. Definitely a top contender too. It has at least one or two scenes that I think are just really good, and wholesome. The sister breaking down because of the pressure of COVID was just something we could all relate to, no matter where you lived. And the romance... I got butterflies with that one. :) The series made me cry and made me laugh, but mostly it felt like eating sugar, dipped in honey, coated with caramel. It was one of the sweetest series ever. Too bad we didn't get a second season.
I kinda wished Justin and Eli are the main leads too though. I’m from the Philippines and although tattoos aren’t…
Thank you for the cultural insight! Those are points I didn't even think about. Yeah, I think they should have covered them with makeup. Or maybe have him wear long sleeve shirts and use makeup on the neck.
I don't mean to disrespect the lead, Tommy, who seems like a fantastic actor and I am sure that's why he got the role. However, one has to wonder why they didn't have Rabin play the role of Nikki instead (and Tommy play Justing). He seems to fit the description of Nikki better. IDK if highschoolers can get tattoos in The Philippines, but here in the USA it would be almost unheard for a nerdy guy like Nikki to get tattoos. Personally, growing up in Puerto Rico, I associate tattoos with a whole different kind of student. Tommy also looks much older. He is adorable and so cute, but he does look older too. I would have put some glasses on Tommy and make him play Justin, and I would have Rabin play Nikki without his glasses.
Anyone else thinks that way too?
Again, no disrespect to the lead Tommy who is really giving us some nice sparks with his co-lead. I LOVED that dancing scene. He did so well. However, Rabin is just fantastic and very believable too and he seems so adorable. Maybe that's why they casted in the role of Justin. I think we have to feel for Justin... So, maybe I am wrong.
One thing is for sure, this is a fantastic series. I am glad it got produced. Kudos to everyone involved. Thus far, I am loving it. My hats off to you guys!
Also, did you guys catch how the intro tells the story of the series? I think Justin will eventually warm up to Eli.
I was a little afraid because i didn't have love the last Regal Entertainment BL (Ben x Jim & BXJ forNever) but…
The premise is not original but the cinematography is pretty cool. The use of color is almost as good or better than any Thai BL. In fact, the cinematography rivals Boys Lockdown and Gameboys.
I think BenXJim started good, got a bit boring in the middle, then got interesting again, and then ended in a confusing, weird way with characters doing things out of character.
My point? I am a bit concerned this could be good almost all the way and then they ruin it in the end.
But I agree, this is the best Pinoy BL I have seen in a LONG time.
Reynold Tan isn't very convincing when he's being thuggish, but he definitely turned on the heat when he needed…
I interpret it as that he is not a real bad boy but just a boy starving for attention from his mom. He hesitated before he vandalized the school and he was against stealing the answer sheets.
But I agree, when he gets mad and tries to be mean it comes off like he is faking it. The actor most be a very nice guy. At least he is better at getting mad than Phuwin is ;)
The man is hot. Very hot. But he really is doing a good job with getting the sparks fly between him and his costar.
I love this. First time since 2020 that I am genuinely excited about a Pinoy BL.
Haven't watched My Day and won't watch it. I don't care abou the love story of a broken up couple tbh. But the…
Just watch Episode 8 of My Day to watch the roof top kiss. That's all you are missing. It is definitely one of the most iconic scenes of 2020. The love making scene afterwards is also one of the best I have seen in a BL.

The second couple is pure fantasy and I am willing to accept the impossibility of what's going on.

This is a good series. It seems very promising! I hope it delivers!
