I found this drama a mixed bag. Love the first arc but then it just goes downhill especially the mortal arc. If they didn't include such a strong unrequited romance with the SML and then forced vilification of the same, I would have loved it more but at the end I just didn't like the leads together. It just turned cliche and predictable,
Oh my god, it is the most boring Chinese series I have ever watched! It made me doze off so many times in the chair. It is a mockery in comparison to Eternal Love. There I loved these leads but this one is all over the place. I forced myself through the hella boring fox arc, then the pointless mortal arc and when I was finally getting somewhat interested, the doozy dream arc finally broke the camel's back.
I agree with you. I was sleepy bored in the first half and then same now in that aranya dream. It is literally all over the place, the romance is unsatisfying overall as there are strong seconds and then boring hours.
Gonna get a lot of fire with this as I see some really strong fan lobby been rating bombing here with all 10s.
I am biased against YM so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have with someone else leading the show. Also there were many inconsistencies in the drama's first half, especially personalities not matching with people of tens of thousands years of experience. Well actually that didn't change much throughout. Reckless remained reckless and stupid evil remained stupid evil. Simply speaking there was no proportional character growth.
Yes, there is no competent evil character, it has the standard fare 1D demonic evil character that you find in thousands of Chinese novels. This one too blabbers and shouts the same way. Just that this one takes more than one hit and drags itself till the end of the series.
The main focus of this drama is the romance and schemes which are done very well. In fact the drama completely focuses on the main characters, all else be damned. The actual world building is mixed, on one hand it describes the overall things well but then there is this extreme lack of detail about the Gods, their powers and related martial aspects. The god realm is extremely lacking in details; the settings somehow start to feel like a low budget drama.
There was only one impossible situation in the whole series that flopped the plot and I don't understand why couldn't…

I mean what kind of driver in his right mind, stops the bus in the middle of a bridge? There was such a wide shoulder and a footpath to boot on the side, why couldn't he just stop there?
Stopping in the middle lane of a three lane highway speaks of a lot more going wrong than irresponsible behaviour! It wasn't like the girl had a gun to his head.

The focus of the drama may seem to be everything else but IMO it is romance. As it is the romantic subplot of the leads that carries and makes possible everything that happens in favour of them. Both would not have survived to see their goals met, had they not loved each other, especially the FL.
Also the notion of expecting direct expression is absurd. I consider even adding a kiss scene as a blunder in historical dramas.
But I also despise it, when it is added and is handled so poorly like a fish kiss or in this case, no faces! There was that blurred, parrot scene as well... I for one know the parrots were eating their stuff so it was doubly disgusting.
What I characterise as the break up was the plot device after which the parrot scene happens as at that point both leads in their minds have reached the acceptance stage. Again it is the direct expression of break up that influences our minds but at the emotional level the expression of the ML vehemently making the FL leave is the same.
Previously whenever both met there was a feeling of elation, relief, excitement and expectation for viewers which gets increasingly lessened towards the end. And the quick ending completely crushes that feeling.
That's exactly how I felt, empty. Usually I have conflicting thoughts of archiving a series in my library or not but this was such a disappointment that I haven't experienced in a long while.
IMO it was great from start to middle, and then it started to bog down. Considering its namesake, it certainly did not live up to it by ending it in the same episode where the villain dies. The brilliant schemes, witty scenarios become patchy and things just simply slow down to a crawl.
I was addicted and then I was bored. As usual in Chinese dramas, plot takes a huge hit once the leads get to express their feelings for each other openly, usually that long kiss after a long breakup. The leading scenes are passionate without direct expression and then all of a sudden they get reduced to an awkward best friend relationship with loving eyes. The ML should have consulted Yang Yang, when courting Dilraba :P
Even with decades of experience, only rare Chinese writers can cope with censorship limitations while depicting post acceptance passion.
Also IDK why they excluded action scenes involving the ML in the later parts, he looks so good fighting.

This is a roller coaster. Starts and ends awesome but the middle is boring, I dozed off many times... Unfortunately Shen Yue, the actual lead among the leads' story is most uninteresting and skip worthy.
By E6 its a good drama, not as good as the rating, perhaps it will improve later. Though I hated the first episode for some reason, perhaps it was the flu.
There is also this unrealistic portrayal of the importance of galleries and its directors among normal people and students on buses. I haven't laughed as much otherwise than I have on the utter stupidity of these scenes. The drama could have done without easily.
Its a good drama. The only downside is the downright draggy nature of the story. I found the last half particularly uninteresting. The romance is great though.
I gathered it as an inferior version of Reply 1988. The way that drama held all its characters together is worlds apart than this one which feels like it was axed and then the story was adapted to the reduced number of episodes towards the end.
Regardless, it is a diamond in the rough, only if it would have been longer...
