I think they're still underestimating or misunderstanding her. From the Lin family's reaction (including xlx and the maids) this is the first time they encountered this level of craziness. Most of them are good normal people who can't imagine personally killing anyone, even if it's justified.

It was as he said to xlx, he knows he's not at fault but he's still sad.
