This is what i didnt like about the Shen men, they didnt tell thir wives. Only the old madam had an inkling. The other wives were not expecting that disaster at all.
I know in that period, the men are not expected to tell their wives about work. Still. No steps were made to posisbly save them. Or i guess they were also expecting them to do what they did.
