They totally missed the point on his personality. Tang Ci is way too sweet and righteous to do something like that.

Of course, we saw that when she realized he was immensely sad because of those traumatic experiences. She would have told the truth and bore the consequences of her action. Because although she has low self-esteem. she is courageous and strong. And she had a crush on him despite his harsh treatment.
Had she told the truth, he would have forgave her despite his negative bias against her. And the story would have been less painful for him. The two had their share of suffering in this story.
