The 1★ “earthquake” from 5/2–5/4 that dragged the score from 7.9 to 7.3 appears to be over. With the finale today, here’s the mathematical counter‑force scenario that could undo that shock. About 600 people are still currently watching; if roughly 300 finish and rate — with a mix of 30% 10s, 30% 9s, 20% 8s, and 20% 7s, and minimal new 1★ ratings or other low scores — the score can realistically climb back to 8, or at least 7.9.

Normally the overall score is 0.1–0.3 lower than the Completed score, but Eight Hundred is down 0.43. This is probably because a lot of users drop it early with 1 star and also rate it 1 star separately.

Some people lower their ratings for reasons like “Chen Hui’s parents are too short” or “medical insurance is important for serious illness.” But medical insurance wasn’t even widely available in China in 1997, so that criticism doesn’t really make sense.

i am at ep 5and i don't think there's any going back for ml at this pointi really like the show so far but i hate…
People often watch tragic stories because they care about the characters, the performances, the journey, and the unraveling, even when they know things are going to go bad. Romeo and Juliet, Love Story, and Titanic are still worth watching even if you already know what happens. Breaking Bad is an even better example in the crime genre.

I just saw this Douban user who gave it 4 stars write, "I didn't really understand the true meaning of the words father-son cat-mouse game until the end of the story, which is the excitement of the cat-and-mouse game, and the helplessness and heartbreak of the father-son confrontation."

Episodes 11 & 12 are incredible. Even if you hadn’t watched any of the earlier episodes or didn’t know the story at all, you could still get completely immersed — they’re that well done. And knowing this is the same director who made Falling Into Your Smile… his range is impressive.

the endings of each episode are so climatic, sometimes on the edge of your seat

I wonder how much of the timing of his actions in the very last scene Xu Kai's own intuition to perform it that way. It was hard to watch yet touched so many viewers. I think this kind of drama is better for an actor's craft than the idol dramas especially ones that the director has too much control of the visuals. In this drama, Xu Kai's acting shined best because he had more freedom to express his character.

Really like the opening of this drama and how they introduce the characters with the music and graphics looks…
I really like the opening too. Part of me feels like I shouldn’t, because it’s so melancholy and dark — but maybe that’s exactly why it works. It captures the emotions you’re feeling so precisely that it resonates. It feels like a release, which fits a heavy emotional drama. It sets up the mood before you watch. When I see the faces of the characters, even the bad ones, I feel sorry for all of them because in this story, like the victim became the perpetuator and the perpetuator became the victim.

but i put it on hold because I'm waiting for all eps out so i can binged watching it
I was referring to those who put it on hold status and still rated it a 1 star, that should be very rare, it's mostly the drop status. Tomorrow is the final episode.

Person Yang Yang
Yang Yang seems to do about one drama a year. Is it because he has other activities besides acting?

Plan to Watch + 1‑star: I hate it even though I haven’t watched it.
On Hold + 1‑star: I hate it but I might come back later.
Currently Watching + 1‑star: I hate it but I’m still watching it.
Completed + 1‑star: I hate it but I watched every episode anyway.
Dropped + 1‑star: I hated it so I quit — the most believable status, but still an unreasonable 1‑star.

The link to WeTV the score is 9.4 but the other Tencent link the score is 9.2. I go with WeTV 9.4 since the episode data is updated.

The drop rating fell twice today, first from 2.28 to 2.06 and then from 2.06 to 1.81. For this latest drop, the drop‑user count only increased from 63 to 72, a change of 9, but mathematically it would take about 20 new 1‑star drop‑user ratings to cause that decline. It’s unclear whether the current 7.3 drama rating already reflects this or if it will drop further. If those 20 1-star drop users also rate the drama a 1‑star — and it’s very likely they will — their ratings alone would be enough to pull the drama score from 7.3 down to about 6.9 once everything updates.

This suggests to me that Xu Kai fans tend to wait until they've finished the entire drama before rating a drama because they will give it a 9 or 10.

Preemptive score suppression in action. This sudden wave of 1-star drops at only 4% completion looks like antis trying to drag the score down early and set a low baseline before more Xu Kai fans finish and flood in with high ratings.
Stable at ~7.9–8.0 → sharp and instant drop to 7.4 after 46% spike in 1-star drops
+15 more 1-star drop users pulled drop rating from 2.28 to 2.06 and pull the score down from 7.4 to 7.3. I think usually drops don't rate a drama because that would be a reasonable person, like why bother, you hardly watched it, but I think here, the 1-star drops are rating it.

They want to pull the score down early, while the drama is still getting a lot of attention.
When the score suddenly drops (like from 7.9 to 7.4), new people see the lower number and are less likely to watch or give high ratings.

I think that there are more 1-stars that are not obvious hidden elsewhere not just in the drop which is easy to spot. To go to 7.3, I can only see add'l 15 new 1-star, but there has to be more to drop to 7.3. The data may be delayed. They drop the score then update the data later.

7.5?????? JOKE of the CenturyWho's giving this low stars. CLOWNS 🤡
I think it will go back to 7.7 or 7.8 as the completed rises. Hopefully if the completed can rise to 8, then they 'l give it 7.8 or 7.9. You don't see other dramas get this kind of treatment showing a low score when it's not done rated
