well the books are written by the same author, so I guess it is a common trope in two of her books.However, I would dare to say that at least Gu Yun didn´t really have that much time of "happy youth":
but SPL is not modern times at all? it is fantasy that is why they have steam-powered gadgets. but they didn´t shoot guns, instead used arrows and fought with swords instead of ... gunpowder and guns?
am I the only one who mistook it for ancient times but with additional fantasy elements in a sense that instead of dragons they had machines in those times which was rather odd compared to real history? was I imagining it wrong?

(though he had chosen that path but Gu Yun didn´t) ZiShi not being able to really choose his own direction in life (it was simply "you are now the head of the sect" and "you are now a Marquis and a Marshal" I also felt that their personalities were kind of similar?
