My most favourite drama ❤️❤️❤️

It's a must watch drama ....the plot , the story , the actors , the entire cast was completely mind-blowing...I love each and everyone in this drama . I even cried, laughed, got angry so many emotions i felt while watching this . This C drama teaches alot of good things like ..women empowerment, friendship bonds, building trust , staying loyal to one's nation , love , sacrificing for the country , fighting against the evil and traitors . It has highlighted the bitter truth , and so many other things ...apart from all these things I really loved Xu Kai , Bai Lu , Tobby Lee , I loved everyone in this drama . This drama I would consider as rarest gems . I'm not Chinese but I love China so much and its rich history alot ❤️

Rewatch Worthy

A true og in the KDrama world.

Rewatching this made me realize how ahead of their time this show was.

Even if this was more than ten years ago, the writing is beautifully crafted in a way that the story shows growth.

It is both funny, heartwarming, and emotional.

The chemistry between the leads isn’t what you’d call steaming. But it is cute.

The second male lead also known as the villain is both annoying and pitiful.

Overall, I’m really glad I rewatched this.

I have no words to express my sorrow after watching this C Drama....I literally felt bad right at the ending ...I thought it's gonna be different somthing like happy ending I expected. Every character in this story played very well . But I was waiting foolishly for 25th Episode but to my disappointment it ended till 24th 🥺. It's a very tragic story , felt so sad.

learning what love is like

I love how it is supposed to be unironically cliche due to the setting of the novel. It is so quirky in its own way and I enjoyed it for what it was. Main standout is how amazing the female character is. I loved her so much in this show. Her chemistry is good with the male lead too. Male lead will always do well in CEO roles and I will eat it up every single time. I did not care for the second that much. I am starting to get tired of the trope where the plot does not explain parts of it. It is nice to come up with your own theories though, but I need closure. I also needed to see more scenes of them happy because where is my wedding? Female lead now learned that love is not so bad after all. <3

Wait a minute

“Affinity” is a senseless drama with no clear direction, but it still has something worth watching. If you enjoy intense love stories filled with romantic scenes that give you goosebumps, this drama might be for you. The story itself is illogical, but the acting is top-notch—especially the male lead. I watched it till the end mainly because of the intense love story and the chemistry between the leads.
By “intense scenes,” I don’t mean bold scenes. It’s a deeply romantic love story with many kissing scenes that highlight emotional intensity rather than explicit content.

A Great Love Story with a Slice of History

I was a team- Story of Yanxi Palace who refuses to watch Ruyi because it’s supposed to tell the same story upside down where the protagonists and antagonists are swapped. I used to believe that Yanxi told a more historically accurate version of these people. But I have now changed my mind after watching this 7+ years after it airs. This is a Masterpiece that makes so much more sense. To me, it makes Yanxi a little lightweight in terms of realism and depth although Yanxi is still very entertaining and charming.

1) Story
For people who complain about the plot and ending etc, I think they forgot that this is supposed to be a historical drama. So you can’t change history. It helps if one reads up a bit about Qianlong (his family section, double click on the characters) in Wiki before watching this drama. Everyone knows that Step Empress’ life didn’t end well but we never figure out a logical story of what happened until this comes along. The story told in Yanxi is too fictionalized. This drama helps to explain LOGICALLY how a person can seem so unloved yet she had children and was constantly with the Emperor until something happened. And what could happen to upset her so much that she cut off her hair knowing it is a taboo and would end everything for her…must be humanly too much to bear, as told in this drama. . This drama also explains why a person is infertile for so long and suddenly could get pregnant in succession after 15 years of marriage. I think the drama tries to explain all these to us in a well written way; although the reason for her to be buried away from Qianlong is a bit romantized (but I gladly accept it as it fits the narrative). However I dont believe Imperial Consort Ling’s ending is correct. Otherwise she wouldn’t be buried next to Qianlong unless her own son the next Emperor intervened and moved them together after Qianlong died. Regardless this is a very well narrated version of the history we know. From the fate of each character, the children they bore, their clan and background, etiquette, food, surroundings in the palace, all told with precision… exception being the costumes and jewellery …probably…they were more accurate in Yanxi.

Acting
I was resisting this drama for the last 7 years. One day I looked through the list of actors for this one and realised that a lot, I mean most are now established or very established stars. So I got interested since there aren’t that many dramas where you get to see a galaxy of stars together. People raved about Zhou Xun, yes she is good. People said Wallace Huo can’t act, that’s wrong. He acted so well that it makes us hate him at some point. But he is so subtle too, in terms of expression that you can see his lust, his confusion, his arrogance and his regret without too much dialogue. His body language is also wonderful. I especially like the subtle gesture of him holding the consort’s hand when he walks with them to their palaces He makes me pity the Emperor and wonder at the same time how is he supposed to sleep with so many women and make them feel loved too. How does he decide who to visit each evening. Normal human like us would want to spend our evening after hard at work relaxing with the person we like most but the Emperor’s evening job is to entertain one of the women in the harem. I pity the Emperor. So I think he deserves some praise here for bringing out the character so well. At some point I feel the Emperor is a breeding machine. He must be so exhausted. The other actors and actresses all act well too. Villains or otherwise, they pulled it off brilliantly. You could hate, love or pity them. Jing Chao who plays the royal guard is very underrated. I hope he gets more and better roles to show his talent.

Overall, to all Yanxi fans who refuse to watch this and thinks Yanxi is more historically correct, I suggest you watch this to appreciate both differently. Like me, I am blown away by the depth of this drama. I still love Yanxi especially the Emperor played by Nie Yuan. He is super charming. But I can’t help but love Wallace here. He must be the most handsome Qianlong of all time with Nie Yuan as a close second to me. Enjoy this for the overall impact. Don’t expect a lovey dovey ending but to me it’s a perfect ending.

the couple deserved more than 8.0 but...

I really really enjoyed this drama, and the main couple and its plot are really nice. However, the subplots during the first half of the show made me want to skip a lot of scenes. And its not the side characters fault (i liked all the side couples), but the plot by itself.... From the middle to the end of the show i felt that those subplots evolved to a steady rhythm and became more enjoyable. IJust feld it was too slow and tiresome until, idk, epi20. But AGAIN: the show is a good one and the couple create a really healthy relationship. if not the slow rhythm from the first half i think i would give a 8.5 score.

A Rom-Com, Body-Snatched by Sageuk

“The First Night With The Duke”…. The title sounds like a Mills & Boon knockoff and, honestly, it is tacky. The drama itself isn’t - but it is deeply confused. It starts on one note and escalates into something completely different. I didn’t hate it, but I was very aware of the wasted potential. With 16 episodes, this could’ve been a much better ride.

Story
This is a time travel transmigration drama. A lonely college student wakes up as a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her supporting character in a romance novel. She’s not mad about it, since she’s now the adored daughter of a rich magistrate’s family. Her plan is to lie low and watch the Cinderella romance unfold. Naturally, this fails spectacularly. The hero becomes obsessed with her instead. She spends first half of the drama aggressively trying to push him toward the intended heroine. Chaos (and fun) ensues.

Unfortunately, the fun clocks out early. Midway through, the leads declare their love and the drama appears to be possessed. A completely different show takes over. By the end, you’re left wondering if you just watched a rom-com, a sageuk, or a melodrama having an identity crisis. The tonal shift is so abrupt it causes whiplash, and just when you adjust, it’s over. Hence: should have been 16 episodes.

Characters
Yi Beon (Prince Gyeonseong) has a fearsome reputation and the focus of a bulldog with a bone. After a drunken one night stand and a morning escape, he falls hard and refuses to let go. This part of the drama is genuinely delightful, gleefully mocking every K-drama cliché. Despite the scary rep, Yi Beon is pure MacDreamy.

Sun-Chaek starts off refreshingly unbothered. She has an ONS, says goodbye at dawn, and dedicates herself to matchmaking the ML with the would-be FL, for purely altruistic reasons. Her Joseon era cocktail experiments are a highlight and frankly more consistent than the plot.

The side characters include: a scheming would-be FL, a mean girl, faithful sidekicks, a doting family, a jackass king, and a queen mother who cannot mind her business. New characters are introduced purely to drag the drama into sageuk territory. Sun-Chaek’s family, however, is excellent and deserves its own spin-off.

Actors
Ok Taec-yeon looks great, fights well, and romances effortlessly. The role doesn’t challenge him; he’s on cruise control. His deep voice deserves its own fan club.

Seo-Hyun is uneven. She’s solid in lighter scenes but falters in emotional confrontations. Certain angles make her look distractingly like Park Eun-bin, which doesn’t help, especially since she doesn’t quite match Taec-yeon.

The supporting cast does its job. Seo Bum-jun’s lipstick does not. Ji Hye-won nails the mean girl energy, while Han Sol-kwon’s innocent act fools absolutely no one. Poor Lee Tae-sun is dropped into the story midway and tasked with carrying a tonal shift no actor could save.

What bothered me
Accountability simply does not exist here. Characters commit treason, attempt murder, and nearly wipe out entire families — and walk away with wrist slaps and future HEA potential. The Heuksa clan should have lost their heads, not just their jobs. Serving justice is not cruelty.

Also, 12 kids? seriously???

One thing I actually liked (besides Ok Taec-yeon)
The drama resolves the fate of the original Sun-Chaek. Unlike many time travel dramas that pretend the displaced character never existed, this one actually ties up that loose end. Credit where it’s due.

Overall
It starts as a fun rom-com and ends as a confused wannabe sageuk. The transition is messy and abrupt. Not a total waste of time, but not something I’d drop another drama to watch either.

FL was just awful

I really wanted to like this drama but the FL ruined it for me. Don’t get me wrong, she was hurt by the miscarriage and it was terrible, but she blamed it all on the ML. Did she ever stop to think that he was hurting too, no she didn’t. It was all about her and how she was wronged. How do you finally find out that the ML has done all kinds of things for you even coming to airport to talk with you about your relationship and you still leave him standing there, what a witch. He should have never took her back. She did not deserve his love. I don’t know wrote this garbage but they should never write another story.

Final Episode – A Happiness Chosen, Not Calculated

This finale embraces what this series has always been at its core — a romantic comedy that values emotional resolution over perfect logic.

Throughout the story, there were moments where the plot felt uneven or slightly rushed.
Some decisions didn’t always feel like the “best” ones from a rational perspective.
But in the end, this episode reminds us that love is rarely about perfect timing or perfect choices.

Pai’s conflict represents that idea beautifully.
Even when everything suggested that his relationship with Tim might not be the “optimal” path, his heart refused to let go.
And that emotional honesty became the true answer of the story.

North and Yuu’s wedding, with all its grand and overwhelming family expectations, contrasted nicely with the more intimate choice that followed — a wedding not defined by tradition, but by what felt right for them.
That shift from formality to sincerity captured the spirit of the series.

The visual symbolism in the final scenes — black tuxedos and white tuxedos — subtly reinforced the idea of balance, contrast, and coexistence.
Not one “correct” form of love, but multiple ways to be happy.

Is it a flawless script? Not really.
But as a romantic comedy, it delivers something just as important: a sense of warmth, closure, and genuine happiness.

Seeing all four characters reach their own version of happiness makes the journey feel worthwhile.
And honestly, that lingering feeling of “they’ll be okay” is what stays with you after the credits roll.

SPOILERS for HAPPY show that makes viewers smile + laugh. It's cute AND funny.

WATCH THIS!!
For all those doubting about another cold, mean, super condescending ML ... he is NOT.
This TV show and its success highly encouraged the trend of high IQ MLs who are also sweet... early in the show instead dragging the romance...

Also, the main couple has plenty of air time together (unlike many other shows where other side stories take up too much time) .

This TV series shows the ML's point of view too.

This is a very short review...
