Goddess Bless You From Death — When a BL Becomes Something Bigger Than Romance

I went into this expecting a BL. What I got was something way more interesting — a dark fantasy / crime mystery that just happens to have a queer romance inside it. And honestly? That’s why it worked so well for me.

This drama doesn’t feel like it’s trying to sell you a couple. It feels like it’s trying to tell a story first. The romance is there, but it breathes naturally inside the plot instead of being forced into every scene. The world is heavy, spiritual, violent sometimes, and deeply emotional. The story follows a murder investigation mixed with supernatural elements, with Thup — a man who can see ghosts — and Singha — a police inspector tied to fate and protection — pulled into something way bigger than themselves.

And that tone matters. Because this isn’t soft romance fantasy. It’s closer to horror-mystery with emotional tension sitting under everything. That constant feeling that something is wrong, something is watching, something is inevitable… it stays with you. And when the emotional beats hit, they hit harder because the world already feels dangerous.

What really made this work is the chemistry between Pooh and Pavel. Not “fanservice chemistry”. Real, quiet, grounded connection. The kind where you don’t need big declarations because you can feel it in how they look at each other, how they move around each other, how the tension just sits there in silence.

And I think that’s why this drama feels like “a normal drama with queer characters” instead of “a BL trying to be serious”. The relationship isn’t sanitized. The tension is physical, sometimes messy, sometimes very direct — which honestly feels closer to real adult gay relationships than the super slow, innocent fantasy style we often get.

If I’m being honest about why I didn’t give it a perfect score, it’s because I could see where the story could have gone further. Some mythology threads could have been pushed deeper. Some emotional reveals could have hit harder if they were tied back into earlier plot points more tightly. But that might also just be me being used to heavy fantasy world-building and wanting everything to connect perfectly.

Emotionally though? It worked. The story feels haunting in that quiet way — not loud tragedy, but the kind that sits in your chest after you finish. And that’s why the rewatch value is weirdly lower than the quality. Because once you know the truth, once you understand the emotional core and the mystery, the shock is gone. And this story lives a lot in that discovery.

This is one of those dramas that proves BL doesn’t have to feel like BL to be meaningful. It can be horror. It can be fantasy. It can be crime. And the romance can exist naturally inside that world instead of being the whole point.

And honestly, that’s why it stayed with me. Not because it was perfect. But because it felt real inside something unreal.

Gentle love, timeless feelings

Even after my fourth rewatch, Hidden Love still feels just as sincere and emotionally grounding as the first time. What continues to stand out is how familiar youth romance elements are handled with so much care that they never feel empty or repetitive. Sang Zhi’s feelings are quiet, restrained, and deeply personal. She doesn’t rush toward love, she grows into it, slowly and almost shyly, and that gentleness is what makes her journey so believable. Duan Jiaxu’s warmth is just as impactful. The way he initially sees her as someone to protect, guide, and look after, without any romantic intention, makes the eventual shift in their relationship feel earned and deeply emotional.
What makes this drama timeless for me, and why I return to it every year, is the balance it maintains. Romance never overshadows family, friendship, or personal growth. The bond between Sang Zhi and Sang Yan still feels incredibly real, messy, loud, and affectionate in that very sibling way that makes the story feel alive rather than scripted. At the same time, the drama allows space for heavier emotions, quietly exploring past wounds and emotional growth without losing its softness.

Visually, Hidden Love continues to evoke the tenderness of youth and the ache of feelings left unspoken. While the muted tones of the early episodes aren’t my favorite, they almost feel nostalgic now, especially when contrasted with the warmer atmosphere later on. The soundtrack remains one of its strongest elements, seamlessly blending into the story and amplifying every emotional moment. It’s the kind of drama that doesn’t just age well, it grows with you. And even after all these rewatches, it still feels like coming home.

Mystique in the Mirror — When the Truth Hurts More Than the Mystery

This is one of those dramas that hits you emotionally in a way you don’t expect. I went in thinking I was getting a mystery with supernatural vibes, maybe something sad but still comforting in a “tragic love story” kind of way. Instead, what I got was something way more brutal emotionally — the kind of story that slowly breaks your heart while you’re still trying to understand what’s even real.

The thing that destroyed me the most was discovering the truth at the same time as the main character. The whole drama plays with perception: memories, ghosts, hallucinations, identity. You spend most of the story wondering if what you see is supernatural… or psychological… or something even worse. And when the reveal comes, it doesn’t feel like a twist for shock value. It feels like grief. Pure grief.

A lot of viewers connected the story to themes of memory loss and dementia rather than traditional ghost storytelling, which honestly makes the emotional impact even heavier. The narrative slowly builds this idea that what looks like haunting might actually be memory, trauma, or loss reshaping reality itself. That reveal hit people really hard because it’s not fantasy horror anymore — it’s real life horror.

What makes this drama so powerful is that it forces you into the same mental state as the protagonist. Confusion, denial, hope, fear… you feel all of it. We can even compared the emotional reveal to psychological films where you realize the truth way too late, when you’re already emotionally attached to the illusion.

And that’s exactly why I cried so much watching it.

But at the same time… it’s not a comforting drama. Not at all. Once you know the truth, the story changes completely. The mystery disappears. The emotional punch is still there, but the discovery is what makes this drama special. It’s not built to be rewatched for comfort — it’s built to be experienced once, deeply. And honestly, I respect that, even if it hurts.

The acting carries a huge part of this. The emotional restraint, the confusion, the vulnerability — it all feels very grounded. Nobody is overacting the sadness. It feels like watching someone slowly realize they’re losing pieces of themselves, and that’s terrifying in a very human way.

The music works, but it’s not the emotional core. It supports the atmosphere instead of trying to force feelings, which actually fits the tone of the story really well.

At the end of the day, this isn’t a “feel good” BL or mystery. It’s closer to psychological tragedy with emotional romance inside it. It’s about truth, memory, identity, and how love exists even when reality starts breaking.

I loved it.
But I don’t think I could watch it again.
And I think that’s exactly the point.

Could’ve been so much better had the writers not given up on the last two episodes

There are 21 episodes at approximately 10 minutes each and I really like the story.
Two incognito lovers and it turns out that one of them is the emperor.
There is lots of angst and misunderstanding before the ML and FL finally get together and it all flowed quite well.
However……
The acting was mediocre at best apart from the FL who was actually quite good. The villains were all despicable and over the top in their villainy, but I could accept that.
What I can’t accept is how they completely butchered the last two episodes.
Not only did his half brother and the Empress Dowager try repeatedly to assassinate our ML, the half brother even plotted a rebellion and committed treason.
What did the ML do?
Not only did he let him off, but he actually gave him the throne……..My mind is blown..
If this wasn’t bad enough, we then had the empress dowager poison the female lead making it look like she died after being repeatedly let off by the ML and confined to a luxury palace as punishment. They just completely wrote her out of the story at the end so we don’t know whether she was arrested, executed or was confined to her luxury Palace..
It’s like they gave up in the last two episodes because they could’ve had a hidden gem, but they completely wasted it with the terrible ending. It turns out the FL didn’t die and they lived happily ever after. Whatever. Just total rubbish.

I like this one, and I don't know why can't other vertical dramas do rom-com like this one.

The comedy here was lovely, scarce but nice, I loved the playfulness of the ML and I wish we had to see more of it, I don't think the whole story is consistent because I can point out some plot holes but still it was very enjoyable.

The intimate scenes wasn't the best but the romance was great, the FL is kissing with her mouth closed which is something I don't like watching, not because I want them to french kiss to satisfy the viewers, but because those types of kisses make the whole scene look very odd and uncomfortable to watch, I'd prefer not seeing any kiss scene at all to a forced one like this.

I think many actors/actresses can refuse kiss scenes or walk around it somehow, or at least try maybe to make it look pleasant.

Overall nice watch~

The Princess plot was quite interesting.

I watch this drama last December and it was actually still watchable aspects as flaws, so let's list them directly.

The kissing scenes between the ML and FL are solid, both passionate and intense.ML is incredibly charming and manipulative-green tea verified, leaving her ex-husband helpless. Li Zijie was a good kisser.

The political intrigue in the later stages was rushed; the verbal sparring should have been reduced, focusing more on the strategic maneuvering. Too many plot elements, and they were all old tropes, making it quite confusing when you watch this.

I quite like Princess back story (it was actually this drama strong point), you might think she's an insignificant plot device, but she actually has a unique mindset. Not only does she plot a rebellion, but she also wants to be with the FL. In reality, the Princess's rebellion is only because she secured peace through a marriage alliance, but upon returning home, she's condemned for her chastity. FL has a reputation for chastity, and the Princess believes she's only pure when she's with her.

The princess's ending was also good. Although she rebelled, she was ultimately allowed to become the empress. People understood her grievances and hardships, and didn't look down on her. Just like the FL said, a woman's chastity is never beneath her skirts. ML hides multiple identities, only revealed at the end.

Recommended to watch.

Romance entretenido

Can This Love Be Translated?

Can This Love Be Translated? parte de una premisa sencilla, pero emocionalmente engañosa.

This drama was too sweet without you realized you could get cavities.

I watched this and this drama was same as Liang Siwei and Yao Yuchen drama but for the sweetness and campus drama this drama wins. This drama is purely sweet with no angst.

The casting also perfectly captures the feeling of college students, especially Zhi Chunhe—she's look so youthful, a truly innocent-looking girl. FL has a lot of inner monologues. No unnecessary plot, no clichéd storylines, no villains, and while the supporting characters have limited screen time, it's all perfectly placed. Best friends gossip about each other is almost identical to real college life. Zhang Chi and Zhi Chun He are mysterious CP that have unrivaled charm that you cannot help but giddy when you are looking at them.

After watching the entire series, from the script to the actors to the production, there isn't a single flaw to be found beside obvious dubbing since i quite like Zhang Chi real voice. Let me rave about the merits The ending was fine and perfect..

This one reduced the focus on the conflicting family dynamics, which aligns with my expectations. I felt that focusing solely on the main storyline wouldn't affect the overall viewing experience.

From my own experience, this drama was more better when you rewatch this

A Horror BL That is Comforting Me

It’s a bit sad that GBYFD has ended because it became my comfort show, even though it’s horror-themed. The series is a mix of horror, mystery, thriller, and romance. The plot is good, though it’s not overly scary—either it’s intentionally mild or I’m just not easily frightened. I was also mostly focused on the romance between Singha and Thup.

Speaking of their relationship, GBYFD feels very different from Pit Babe when it comes to romance. In this series, the love story is a slow burn—not forced at all and very natural. Their kisses and sweet moments are incredibly romantic, and the way Singha looks at Thup is so convincing that you can genuinely feel the love between them.

Normally, I’m not a fan of slow-burn romances, but in this series, their love develops so naturally that it never feels dragged or artificial. Every time they share a sweet moment, I find myself blushing and giggling.

As for the side couple, they have good chemistry, but their storyline is fairly typical. Still, I appreciate that they were clearly written as a real couple, not just friends or a one-sided love situation.

The story is also easy to follow, unlike many other horror or mystery series. The killer was quite predictable—I already had a feeling about who it was from the moment the character was introduced and started acting innocent.

In terms of acting, Pooh has improved a lot, although he’s always had talent to begin with. Pavel is also a strong actor, but whenever he cries, his aura completely changes—it really stands out. There are no pointless scenes or unnecessary characters; everything is connected to the main plot. The production and cinematography are excellent—you can tell the budget wasn’t cut.

Overall, I enjoyed this more than most other horror BL series, although there is another horror BL that I also rated highly.
