All over the place yet still not enough—an interesting premise that fell short of its potential

Melodramas are typically renditions of people's lives—if you will; a slice-of-life styled series with a little more spice. They tend to showcase the true originalities of their characters with pronounced character arcs, strong emotion, and heavy plotlines. At first, 'Melo Movie' is no different—it sets viewers for expectation that it’ll embody these characterizations with grand depth, originality, and a peculiar sense of artisticness, that in this case, would lay bare within its setting of a cinematographic world where two individuals who are trying to redeem themselves of their lost time meet each other before recognition. However, despite its strong start, the show’s mature feel quickly died down, leaving room for empty and whiplash-giving characters, lackluster performance in acting, and predictable plot.

When two unachieved individuals meet while in the time of their life where they are either in constant wait or pursuit for their desires—what kind of fate will their destiny bind them to? Ko Gyeom’s life is shaped by film, as it is within this realm that his dreams take flight and find breath, while Kim Mu-bi’s life revolves around the industry in the sense that her name and her father tie her down to it like a label. Together, their screen time just falls short of what could’ve been a testament to a bittersweet love story. Only the strongest sides to themselves are shared, while their vulnerable sides stay in hiding, pushed away all whilst secretly yearning to be let shine through. Romantic and swoony, its set-up and premise promised ideas that the show did not further develop, and refrained from steeping in themes that were believed to eventually be explored. What had so much potential production-wise quickly lost its grasp on the actual storyline, that winded up on the common ground of typical rom-com territory.

There are many nuances in the characters themselves that stopped the show from curating an immersive vibe. ‘Melo Movie’ felt empty as a whole in consequence to the mismatch between characters’ behaviours and the storyline. The two leads have faced tragic experiences and are yet very emotionally immature, showing only facades of their true selves to the word—Ko Gyeom, forcing himself to play an overly ecstatic role, and Kim Mu-bi an indifferent and unfazed one. It seems like they are living their lives with little effort, and yet things fall so easily into their hands. They have good friends despite not reciprocating smiles or equal amounts of attention, have grand opportunities come their way, and are constantly reluctant to take them despite it supposedly aligning with their goals. Overall, the leads have the allure of dissatisfaction with their lives which is unfitting to the genre and plays no greater role in the story. Additionally, the actors were poorly chosen and cast, and the otherwise renowned actors barely just fit into the characters’ shoes.

‘Melo Movie’ undeniably struggled to find perfect balance in its blend of rom-com and melodrama. The clash between the two genres the show embodied tore its entirety apart into something not bad enough to render it unwatchable, but certainly unmemorable. Melodramas tend to incorporate elements of slowburn, personal growth, and maturity, with elements borrowed from the slice-of-life genre. As for rom-coms, they encompass silliness, unrealistically planned reunions and set ups between characters, and are typically categorized by their overall lighthearted feel. Despite the big, evident differences between both, ‘Melo Movie’ doesn’t recognize itself in either of these categories alone—instead, it binds both together, alternately varying its penchant in genres depending on the different episodes or storylines presented. Since both ideally bring out different emotions and behaviours from the characters, to have a continuous shift between them not only alienates viewers, but also reveals a lack of depth in especially the leads.

The female lead in particular was very frustrating to watch—Kim Mu-bi fell into a constant habit of contradicting herself. Her motives remained unclear and her personality was in constant shift. Mu-bi would always push Gyeom away but became upset when he actually kept his distance or left, as if he owed her any acts of service or explanation for his leave when she had never put any effort at all into the maintenance of their strange, love-hate relationship. Even though she was bothered enough by his abrupt absence to block him from her contacts, she never thought to reach out and ask if he was alright during his leave. When he did come back, she claimed to be very angered and yet her world quickly resumed its revolving of him, and she even took on some rather unhealthily obsessive qualities.

As if there weren’t already enough neglected aspects in the series, to add to the pile of absurdities, viewers are made to believe both leads truly care and have a liking for one another despite putting no effort whatsoever into their relationship. For example, they spent five years without contact even though they had each other’s phone number and knew where to find one other. They seem to have no chemistry, no interest in each other, no problem with separation or keeping things to themselves—the only thing pulling them together is the simple, hollow, and predictable plot. Given the little actual interaction between the leads, it seems that the show’s intent was for the audience to analyze the individuals presented and their behaviours. However, the leads embody an emptiness that renders character analysis impossible to achieve. It seems fair to say the romance has undeniably missed its mark, veering the rest of the show off of course and resulting in an unwatchable mess.

So tropey and annoying

This show has been quite a let down. Gonna keep it short and a bit spoilery

Once again i have been baited by a show presenting the FL as a strongheaded independent character only to make her fall for the ML one episode in. The ML is pretty much a stalker, following her everywhere, and being "helpful" when she asked him repeatedly to leave her alone. After she falls for him he ghosts her for 5 years and yes he had a reason to be away, but he could have picked up his phone and written her a message. Yay a trope of not talking for no reason other than plot demands it.
Then they meet again for work thing and he acts the same stalkery way and again she falls for that shit. He even bribes her childhood friend to help him. SHE SHOULD HAVE A RESTRAINING ORDER ON THIS MAN IF ANYTHING.
There is also a secondary couple, but i wasnt much interested in them.
They all have a movie related carreer, and the male lead is childhood friends with the secondary couple. FL by magical coincidence starts working with the secondary female lead. Also the secondary couple broke up 5 years ago and met around the same time again the main couple met. It just all feels so lazy and convenient.
The production seems ok, but who cares anymore.
Only real draw for me to continue watching would be the two FLs, but its just too annoying for me.

Comecei assistindo sem quaisquer expectativa, mas, obviamente, pelo nome imaginava assistir um romance puro e caloroso, mas Melo Movie não entrega isso. Na minha, apesar do que li, é sim sobre amor, mas não é só romance. E quando digo amor, é de amigos, família e o romântico também. Além disso, é sobre sonhos, dores, recomeços, sentimentos e decisões.

No inicio achei muito lento, mas dar uma chance aos outros episódios vale a pena pois tudo vai se conectando e você entende melhor a história. Kim Mu Bi e Ko Gyeom fazem a gente se apaixonar, eu adorei o desenvolvimento dos dois (apesar do inicio ter sido confuso, depois melhora). Achei o casal secundário, Hong Si Jun e Son Ju A, bem fraco e sem química, não tive muita paciência para eles mesmo após o episódio que explica melhor o termino dos dois, pois ainda sim, para mim, não faz muito sentido as tentativas de aproximação dela (que fica chato, dava vontade de pular), para além da música. Kim Mu Bi e Ko Gyeom enfrentam suas dores individuais, mas trilham juntos um caminho de compressão e recomeço, é lindo como se apoiam. Acredito também que há uma mensagem legal sobre a forma como lidamos com as coisas na infância e isso molda o que seremos e como lidaremos com o futuro. A vida real não é como um filme, não há um roteiro pronto e uma direção, o desenvolver o Ko Gyeom acrescenta isso e ter os pensamentos dele deu um toque especial nesta mensagem. Algumas coisas não fazem muito sentido e acredito que tenham ficado desconexa, mas em geral é ótimo.

Eu sentia que podia fazer o mesmo, mas o mundo fora dos filmes era opressivo e cruel. Não havia narrativa bem feita ou falas calorosas. A vida era solitária e desolada. Mas isso foi até alguém aparecer... e foi a Kim Mu Bi. Eu não sei se ela está passando pela mesma escuridão que eu, o que importa é que não é mais aquela luz quadrada que eu amo, quem eu amo mesmo é a Kim Mu Bi. "

La serie me atrapó desde el inicio , la historia me pareció muy interesante y los 10 episodios se me pasaron volando.
Los personajes me resultaron profundos, especialmente Ko Jun, quien a pesar de ser un personaje de apoyo se convirtió en mi favorito. Me gustó mucho cómo se utilizaron flashbacks para contar la historia de cada personaje y darles mayor profundidad. Sin embargo, sentí que faltó desarrollar un poco más la historia de Hong Si-jun.
Uno de los aspectos que más me gustó de la serie fue la belleza melancólica que se transmitía en cada capítulo. Esto se lograba a través de la fotografía, la música. Mi capítulo favorito fue 'All you need is love'. La historia, la música y la fotografía de este capítulo me parecieron especialmente emotivas.

Pas de coup de foudre sous les projecteurs pour moi…

Je suis vraiment passée à côté de cette romance... Pourtant, j’étais curieuse au départ, la bande annonce m'avait bien hype, le titre m’intriguait, le visuel donnait envie, et j’espérais une belle mélodie émotionnelle 💔🎻 Mais au lieu d’un slow poignant, j’ai eu droit à une histoire un peu plate, qui m’a semblé traîner en longueur... 😮‍💨

J’ai trouvé ça mou 😴, presque trop doux, comme si tout était enrobé dans un filtre "cul-cul" un peu gênant 🙈. L’émotion ne m’a pas atteinte, et je n’ai pas réussi à m’attacher aux personnages... Peut-être que je ne suis pas le bon public pour ce genre d’ambiance mélodramatique très appuyée 🤷‍♀️

Je reconnais que certains y verront une romance touchante, un peu rétro dans le ton, et je comprends que ça puisse plaire à ceux qui aiment les histoires douces et lentes 💞 Mais de mon côté, ça manquait de relief, de passion, de tension... Résultat, je me suis ennuyée... Après ceci est juste mon ressenti perso, pas une vérité absolue 💭☺️

Bref, une romance qui ne m’a pas touchée, malgré de bonnes intentions, mais parfois, ça ne matche juste pas… 😅💔✌🏻

Não me espantei quando vi que a roteirista de Melomovie é a mesma de "Nosso Eterno Verão".

Premissas diferentes, execuções diferentes, porém que te deixa tão reconfortado como.
Assim como no outro citado, este não é um que você deve vir com expectativas de "vai ter várias reviravoltas, com triangulos amorosos, vilãs v*g*b*nd*s que vai te deixar com ódio no coração e infernizar a vida dos protagonistas. Não, aqui é onde você quer vir pra ver um romance, bem leve, pra ficar feliz com uma ficção que lembra alguma coisa ou outra da realidade.

Melo movie le drama qui chamboule votre cœur

J'ai vraiment adoré se drama.

C'était incroyable, on passé par tout les émotions, dommage que le second cople on pas finit ensemble, je voulais trop qu'ils se remettent ensemble mais dommage.

J'ai compris que leur relation n'allait pas aller loin prk ils voulaient du changement pour réussir dans leur vie et c'est se qui m'a ffafait comprendre que dans la vie pour réussir ilil faut parfois abandonner la chose qui est précieux à nos yeux.

Puis les personnes on bien joué leur rôle j'espère découvrir d'autres drama comme se lui ci.

J'espère avoir la même relation amoureuse.
