Chasing Freedom, Finding Love: A Journey of the Heart.

This is the tale of Luo Ling Yu, a young woman determined to escape an arranged marriage, not only to protect her parents' legacy but also, later on, to safeguard her own freedom. Along her journey, she repeatedly crosses paths with Lu Yun, and their fates gradually become entwined.

It’s a classic costume drama, filled with humor, charm, chemistry, slightly caricatural antagonists, and engaging intrigue, everything we expect and love from this type of series. I wouldn’t say it reinvents the genre, because it doesn’t, but it’s a well-crafted story that allows us to follow Luo Ling Yu’s journey with excitement as she bravely fights for her freedom. She’s such a delight to watch: bold, endearing, and unafraid to go after what she wants, including the people she cares about. It’s refreshing, especially when so many female leads tend to take a more passive role when it comes to love.

Lu Yun, on the other hand, is the definition of a green flag: sweet, protective, and sometimes adorably jealous. But what I appreciate most is how both he and Luo Ling Yu actively are supporting each other in moments of doubt.

Beyond just the romance, what truly makes this drama shine is its compelling and multi-dimensional characters. The princes and noble ladies aren’t just decorative figures in the background, they have their own ambitions, struggles, and personal growth that make them feel real and engaging. Some of the friendships and relationships are particularly beautiful to witness, like that of Prince Heng Yang and Luo Ling Yu, whose bond is built on mutual respect and understanding. Their dynamic, along with many others in the series, adds emotional depth that makes the story even richer.

I won’t reveal more about the plot, but if you’re looking for something lighthearted, cute, and full of romance, this drama is absolutely worth your time.

Rom Com that Rom Coms

The plot gets a 9.5 from me because it said “rom com” and it delivered romance and comedy. If you’re looking for angst, drama, suspense, historical accuracy, etc this show is not it. It stays light and stress-free; conflicts resolve relatively quickly. A feel-good show if you need a pick me up.

I loved the chemistry between the leads. They have a playful chemistry and the battle of wits was entertaining. & Personally for me I loved the FL. She was confident, intelligent, independent, and sassy. And I’m a sucker for MLs who fall in love with their FL’s confidence and strength. I thought they did a great job building on their romance—lots of late night conversations and voiceovers that show you the WHY of them falling in love. Their romance never gets sidelined for secondary characters either.

It’s not a show to make you think hard but it still does a good job with character developments. There’s a running theme of freedom that focuses on the FL and the women in the show; and through the men in her life, you see why she falls for the ML as he’s the one who loves her for who she is and respects her autonomy.

Other pros:
- fun secondary characters
- a solid ending that stayed true to the genre

Cons
- some choppy editing/plots but I’m assuming they had to cut down to 26 eps from the rumored 30. I always give cdramas a pass towards the end lol.

( Edit: Will add that some of the plot at the end may feel out of place but it’s clearly written to reflect the “freedom” theme and how certain people’s perception of love can be confining. The plot towards the end exists to flesh out how much the leads mean to each other even if they’re not always vocal about it. )

Anyway, recommend people giving this one a shot. I think it’s highly underrated and anyone who’s a rom com fan, will likely enjoy it. :)

A Game of Matching Wits

Final Verdict: Dropped

Is this a bad show? No, it honestly isn’t. I probably could skim through the final episodes, and I might still do that. However, for me specifically, it’s lost me.

The last half fizzles out in my opinion. It loses a lot of its charm. I feel like the writing just goes out the window. First of all, they did not build up the intrigue side of the show well enough for the drastic shift in the later episodes to make sense or pull you in. Secondly, some of the male characters drove me crazy… Our lead seems to grow more juvenile as the time goes on but then we’re supposed to buy it when he suddenly gets serious? And don’t get me started on how dumb the crown prince is written. It’s insane. And the antagonists… These “baddies” don’t give you a high stakes feeling at all.

And when I said second-lead-syndrome hits the chat HARD, I mean it. I found myself rooting for the other prince over the ML at times…Big yikes. Loved his character.

Look, I still honestly think a lot of people are gonna like this. So I’m not necessarily recommending against it. I really really enjoyed that first half, and maybe the flaws in the second half won’t bother everyone like it did me. But, personally, it’s gonna be a no.

Initial Review at the Halfway Point (Will Update after Finale)

I had super low expectations for this, but it has pleasantly surprised me. The romcom is definitely coming through strong. Our leads do a great job of portraying these bickering frenemies always trying to outwit the other. It’s funny and charming, and their chemistry is excellent. It’s not a perfect drama, but I’m really having a blast watching it.

Our FL has gotten a bad rap from commenters, but I get her. She’s been shaped by her awful circumstances; so she’s willing to do anything to protect herself, her little sister, and their beloved servant. She manipulates and acts “selfishly”, but reality always shows she has a heart that is strong and compassionate, and she’s brilliant too. This really is seen after episode 6. Stick it out, and she’ll win you over.

Things I’m liking so far:
• The cast is pretty solid. I love our leads, and many of the supporting characters are acted well too. You’ll fall in love with the FL’s little sister.
• The scenery, cinematography, costumes, and OST are *chef’s kiss*.
• The story, took a slow start a bit, but it’s on fire now. It’s really pulled me in. I’m invested fully and excited for the next half. It defies some trope, which I also appreciate.

Things I’m not liking so far:
• Something just wasn’t sucking me in the first five episodes. No “wow factor”. I almost dropped it, but I’m glad I stuck it out. I got done with the game of wits angle over and over because, while it was done well, it felt like there were two whole episodes just dedicated to their competitive dynamic but not in a way that kept you interested. Luckily, it shifted away from that. They still have the game of wits but it’s a part of the plot rather than the whole plot.
• I would like to see the overarching plot of the ML working for the Prince explored much better. They’re going for sneaky and vague, but it just comes across like nothing actually matters. You can’t get invested on their side because I’ve got nothing to work with. Give me some depth.

A perfect match!

Les Belles was not in my radar and I can't remember why I started watching it, but I am glad I did because this is easily one of the best romcoms of this year. And not only that, it has a solid political intrigue on the side.

Lingyu is a wonderful leading lady. She has being through it after her parents' passing, raised (if you can call it that) by her uncle and aunt, she has manage to grow to be a young lady full of confidence and self-love, smart as a fox but, because of her circumstances, she's also kind and humble. Lingyu has a very clear goal in life and plans several steps ahead to get it. It is only right that she would meet her match in Yun, a young lord who has a talent for political and military strategy and comes from a family of court officials. Raised by his uncle, an important Minister, just like Lingyu, but in a loving enviorement that has allowed him to grow to be one of the capital's most desirable talent and bachelor.

Watching these two play an extended game of wits, as they get to know each other and come to the realization they might be perfect for each other, it's an absolutely a treat. It's only enhanced by Yun's family dynamics with his cousin Xian (a hilarious mother hen), followed by the strict aunt and uncle, and Grandma's constant health ruse. Add to that Jinchuan (Yun's nagging servant) who does everything possible to get his ship sailing, and you have romcom gold.

But that's not all, the rest of the supporting cast it's also full of lovable characters with excellent character development. The Crown Prince and his siblings are a handful (iykyk) but really honest and good people; it's been a while since I have seen such great royals. Miss Chen and Miss Zhou complete the friends group, bringing some really heart-wrenching and hilarious moments.

The political narrative of this drama it's also really interesting and balances out the comedy perfectly, giving the drama some gravitas and opportunities for the characters to grow as young adults taking their places in the public arena. All the characters are developed wonderfully through their relationships but also the political intrigue they must handle, which has an emotional and action packed resolution.

Les Belles just kept getting better with every episode, until the very last scene, and keeping me on my toes and entertained. The excellency of this is not only thanks to the cast perfect chemistry and performances, but also due to the people behind the scenes. The filming locations were perfectly chosen, the sets beautiful to look at, each costume design a perfect mirror to the character wearing it. The stunt coordinator for all the action scenes and even some of the physical comedy really delivered some of the most hilarious and bloody savage choreographies.

Director Huang Ying Xiang and scriptwriter Wang Hong are a dream team; and I would love for these two badass women to work together again if they deliver this kind of high level production every time.

Don't miss out on Les Belles!!

A cute romcom with a lot of humor

This is the first time I'm watching a costume drama being light hearted. I had no expectations from this but it was a good watch.

This story is not meant for those who love caring and sympathetic FLs. Here the FL has got so many shades — she's brutal, savage but also a clown in her own way, which is GOOD. BUT sometimes I felt the urge to put my hand in the screen and smack her :")).

I believe in redemption tracks but here the redemption isn't slow and visible to the eyes. You just come across this one scene where she's kidnapped (and almost physically assaulted) and then she wakes up after days (of recovering from the trauma) all changed. I kind of didn't like it. I love when the redemption comes slowly. Although here the redemption isn't really a whole 'redemption' but more like her realising the worth of her brain apart from her beauty. And someone who's behind a matrilocal husband for years — the redemption seems very fastened.

Also I hate how both the Prince and the antagonist gave me unsettling vibes. Maybe it's because of the acting but whatever — hate em'.

The second couple's story is as much interesting as the main cpl's so they didn't bore me with their screenspace. I love the scenes of both the couples. They're filled with banter, humor and subtle romance. The politics isn't too hard or complex on the mind (being brutally honest, by the end you wouldn't even care to watch that).

Overall, a good watch for those who want a break from watching ctraumas and ktraumas with something that doesn't focus a lot on politics.

Another Romantic Hidden Gem with Heart

Luo Ling Yu is a young woman determined to escape neglectful foster parents and an arranged marriage. She wants to live freely with her younger sister and protect her parents' family fortune. Along her journey, she repeatedly crosses paths with Lu Yun, and their fates gradually become entwined.

It’s a classic costume drama rom-com, filled with humor, charm, and overwhelming chemistry between couples. This was so well written, directed, cast, and acted. Alen Fang as Lu Yun and Jelly Lin as Luo Ling Yu have electrifying chemistry and camaraderie. The two together leave you wanting more of this couple pairing. Alen Fang, whom I have seen in a few dramas, has really matured into a better actor. His puppy dog eyes and gestures are totally believable and swoon-worthy. Jelly Lin is absolutely beautiful and a strong FL worthy of the part. I have not seen her in many dramas, but I am sure she has matured also because she did a spectacular acting job. They make you want to follow their journey of looking for justice and love.

What makes this drama more interesting is that most of the cast has straight forward and simplistic characters. They are easy to follow and easy to love. The side stories are interesting and actually go somewhere. Lately, I have found myself fast-forwarding through side stories in dramas but not this one. There is brotherly love and a side romance; I dig it.

On another note, I really liked the costumes worn and the production. Although the costumes were a bit vibrant as far as color, the way they were put together was beautiful. The set felt warm and not congested like some of the sets are, and this made the production feel bigger, although it was obvious that it was a small budget.

The soundtrack sounded nice even though I did not understand the words, so I cannot speak much on that.
What I would have liked more would be to add to this storyline a bit. Put in some fight scenes and special effects and so on. But it was okay the way it was.

In conclusion, this was light and sweet for the romantic at heart. It was also a well-made drama. Not to cheesy.

Light-hearted and humorous but with a serious story to tell

This was a lovely romance drama. Story was light-hearted and humorous with a serious mystery to uncover. What happened to Lu Yan's father who was a general? Was he really a deserter?

The drama featured a cast of very good-looking male and female leads, including the villain. Besides the lead actor Alen YiLun Fang (Lu Yan), the second lead actor Charles Lin (Prince Heng) and the villain acted by Jerome Deng (Fan QingChen) were also very captivating. Charles did not look like the typical Chinese actor (notwithstanding that he is Taiwanese) - I always suspect that lead Chinese actors were commonly selected based on a certain look. Jerome looked really psychotic when he was upset in the story - I certainly hope it was completely due to his excellent acting :).

The drama was very humorous in the early episodes. The lead couple was always getting into each other's way. The story started with Luo LingYu, an orphan, trying to run away from an arranged marriage she was forced into by her uncle and aunt. During the wedding, Lu Yan sneaked into her fiance's home to search for evidence of treason. Mistaking him for a burglar, LingYu deliberately raised an alarm to divert attention away from herself in order to escape. This caused him to be discovered and shot, and to fall into the sea. Coincidentally, he was saved by the runaway bride in a boat. She nursed him not knowing who he was as he was wearing a mask, and was quite nasty to him. However, not wanting to be seen with him when she reached YueZhou, she forced him to jump back into the sea.

At YueZhou, she sought refuge at her aunt's home where she settled and tried to look for a matrilocal husband. She thought her third cousin , being also an orphan, might be a good candidate and tried to win his affection. More humour arose. Unknown to her, he was Lu Yan whom she sabotaged earlier. Taking revenge, he was always making things difficult for her. Her fiance Fan QingChen traced her all the way to YueZhou. Looking for protection, LingYu threw herself at Prince Heng, a childhood friend of Lu Yan, and won his affection. Threatened by a love rival and getting jealous, the table was turned with Lu Yan now trying to win back the affection of LingYu but was ignored.

The drama got more serious when Lu Yan got nearer to uncovering the secret behind his father's disappearance. What happened next? That's for you to find out.

I had seen Alen in two other dramas: as the male lead in Love by Hypnotic, a comedy and second lead in A Journey to Love. I remember him vividly as the casanova in the latter, who added a lot of humour to the drama. However, I have yet to see a blockbuster where he was the lead actor. He is both good-looking and an excellent actor. I hope he gets his break soon.

Of course, like a lot of dramas, there were opportunities for me to nitpick. The most common was that someone could faint and yet could continue to stand leaning on someone - I always find this laughable - when people faint, their knees grew soft as well. Another was when Lu Yan dashed into the enemy camp single-handedly to save his love one - that was quite stupid for a battle strategist. When he finally found his love, he threw her onto a horse and told the horse to take her back to the camp - why so stupid a second time? He could have got himself onto the horse with her and rode away without staying behind to be hurt. I should check out whether the director or screenwriter was the same as for Love by Hypnotic where there were some similarities in the dramas.

On a whole, this is an excellent drama for some light-hearted entertainment. I was debating whether to give it a 8.5 or 9, but decided on 9 which is a bit generous. However, with a rating of 8.0 on Mydramalist, I think this drama was underrated.

“Nothing can bind me. It’s just a cage. I’ll dismantle it.”

Pros-
1. Luo Ling Yu-
She is confident, clever, witty, independent and highly optimistic. She knows what she wants and can do anything to achieve that. My girl only wanted freedom for herself and her sister. Some might think she's cold, but I liked that about her. After her parents died, she could only rely on herself even after living with her so-called Aunt and Uncle.
Despite her past, she stayed true to herself. She also raised her little sister with those same values. She bows to no one, but would give her life for her sister in a heartbeat. Their bond is amazing. Her friendships with Yang Ling, Princess Tang, and Prince Heng Yang are the best. Each friendship is unique and they always help her when she needs it.
From having no one to rely on to being surrounded by the most protective people. She came a long way!

2. Lu Yun-
He is such a sweetheart and a green flag. His protectiveness and jealousy both are very cute. He's the type who would do anything for you if he wanted to.
Ling Yu and Lu Yun both lost their parents. But, she never had a loving family like he did afterwards. She only had herself and her little sister. That's why she does not ask for help. Lu Yun is ready to risk it all for her, even if she denies his help a thousand times.
He slowly fell in love with her kindness.

Their chemistry was the most beautiful part. It is not like other cliche romance dramas. Their cute fights will make you fall in love with them. Despite having issues with each other, they will do anything to protect each other when the situation calls for it.
Her chasing him not knowing his real identity in the first half and him chasing her after knowing everything about her in the second half was just so beautifully shown.

3. Prince Heng Yang-
He is funny, smart, charming, kind and protective. Another green flag. I really wanted him to end up with someone in the end, but it didn't happen.
The bromance was so good. Him getting jealous over a nickname was so adorable.
He has become one of my favorite second leads. His excitement and happiness over little things were so cute!
The friendship dynamics of this drama are very good.

4. Luo Yun Hua(Little sister)
She is so cute and kind. She may be small, but she's wise. Big sister has nurtured her with love. I can totally see the good upbringing. I love how she does everything her sister says but If she feels something is wrong then she will definitely not be afraid to speak about it. She gets the boldness from her big sister. I truly admire their bond. She stole the show for me.

5. Fan Qing Chen-
He played a very good villain. He made me want to slap him in the second episode only. I hated him so much for his actions but I loved the writing of this character. I love how they just made him obsessed with her rather than giving it the same old reason that I see in most of the dramas. He just wanted her as a possession. Nothing more nothing less. He still creeps me out. And that's how I know that the actor nailed the role.

6. Another good thing about this drama which makes it to so special is the side characters of this drama. All the women in this drama were strong in their own way. This is the first drama in which I have seen Prince and Princess in positive roles. Each character had important roles to fulfil individually. I really liked Prince Changyi and Yang Ling’s love story.

Cons-
1. The last few episodes were rushed. They could have shown the war better. Maybe they could have made another season, like Love Like the Galaxy.
2. The plot got repetitive after a few episodes.
3. The physical intimacy wasn't great!

One of my favorite quotes from the drama-

“If good deeds are forced, they become burdens.”

Despite having its own flaws, this drama aced in a light-hearted rom-com. Would I recommend it? Absolutely, yes.

a nice spin on a lot of tropes

First impressions: I just looked at the cast section, and the screenwriter and director are both female, which in hindsight makes sense bc there are a lot of feminist ideals that the FL talks abt. There are a lot of callbacks to previous scenes, and I love it when shows do that. Most of the scenes are done on location, so there are so many breathtaking backgrounds, and you can tell they have a high budget too bc the wardrobe and makeup ppl went all out.

TLDR; for me, the most important part of this show is the life lessons it teaches. The story is mostly pretty realistic when it comes to how they handle certain situations. Acting seems kinda forced at times. The only character whose acting seems the most natural is Xue Chen's errand boy. The intro and outro songs are really catchy, and they love using them in the scenes. It's more modern-style, and sometimes they'll use pop elements in there for some reason. For me, it's a one-and-done, but don't let it downplay the story and lessons of the show.

Story: There's a lot of role reversal tropes that are pretty well executed. There are a lot of misunderstandings, but for the most part, it's not overly dramatic and it usually gets resolved pretty quickly, and the characters aren't dumb and actually use their brain. There were a lot more life lessons than I thought it would have. As for the mystery, it doesn't really start picking up until the tail end of the show. In terms of comedy, it definitely plays a lot with romcom tropes that are quite enjoyable.

Acting/Cast: Seems a bit unnatural a lot of the times, idk why. Love the writing of the characters tho. The dynamics between the characters are pretty mature, and I love how they talk about their relationships. They have a lot of reflection in their actions that I don't see in most cdramas.

Music: Intro and outro songs are catchy, with the bgm using more modern elements.

Rewatch value: One-and-done for me, although I enjoyed the character dynamics and morals of the show.

A SIMPLE HISTORICAL ROM-COM WITH A MODERN TOUCH

Review of 2025 C-Drama Les Belles

A Beautiful Romance That Starts Strong but Loses Its Way

Les Belles (2025) is a historical romance drama that hooks you in with stunning visuals, a compelling love story, and plenty of tension between the leads. However, as the story progresses, what starts as a charming and intense romance slowly gets weighed down by unnecessary drama—particularly an obsessive second male lead and a war subplot that feels completely out of place.

The Story: From Fiery Encounters to Unexpected Love

The drama follows Luo Lingyu (Lin Yun), a noblewoman whose life is turned upside down when her once-powerful family falls from grace. With nowhere else to go, she travels with her younger sister to Jianye, hoping to seek refuge with distant relatives. However, fate has other plans when she has an unfortunate run-in with Lu Yun (Fang Yilun)—a seemingly cold and arrogant young master who, unbeknownst to her, is part of the very family she’s trying to turn to for help. Their first meeting? A heated argument that ends with her shoving him overboard.

What follows is a classic "enemies-to-lovers" romance filled with sharp banter, undeniable chemistry, and a slow-burning attraction. Lu Yun, initially skeptical of Luo Lingyu’s intentions, gradually finds himself drawn to her resilience and intelligence. Meanwhile, Luo Lingyu, despite her strong will, starts seeing past his arrogant exterior and into the man beneath. Their relationship builds steadily, making for a satisfying and engaging love story—at least for most of the drama.

Where It Falls Apart

While Luo Lingyu and Lu Yun’s love story is the highlight of the drama, Les Belles stumbles in a few areas. One of the biggest frustrations is the obsessive second male lead, who starts off as a likable character but gradually becomes overbearing. What initially seems like sweet admiration turns into a repetitive, exhausting subplot where he refuses to move on, dragging out unnecessary drama between the leads.

And just when it seems like the drama is reaching a natural and satisfying conclusion, it suddenly introduces a war subplot in the final episodes. This shift feels abrupt and disconnected, as if the writers felt the need to add high-stakes conflict but didn’t know how to integrate it smoothly into the story. Instead of focusing on the emotional payoffs that had been carefully built up, the drama diverts attention to war-related tensions that feel unnecessary and rushed.

What Works & What Doesn’t?

✔ Breathtaking Cinematography – The visuals are absolutely stunning, from the intricate costumes to the beautifully crafted set designs. Every scene looks like a painting.

✔ Strong Chemistry Between Leads – Lin Yun and Fang Yilun carry the romance with their performances, making their characters’ relationship feel natural and engaging.

✔ A Well-Built Love Story (At First) – The gradual development between Luo Lingyu and Lu Yun is satisfying, with a good balance of tension, affection, and emotional depth.

❌ The Obsessive Second Male Lead Becomes a Headache – His infatuation with Luo Lingyu starts off as harmless but drags on for far too long, making it frustrating to watch.

❌ The War Subplot Feels Unnecessary – Instead of wrapping up the romance properly, the last few episodes shift into an abrupt and out-of-place war storyline that disrupts the flow.

To be savored as pure entertainment (very successful) full of handsome guys.

Romantic comedy, historical, fun and light

PLOT: The FL, an orphan, flees a marriage arranged by her uncle and aunt with the ML2 (rich and powerful psycho) and runs into the ML, a noble, orphan, looking for clues about the death of his father, betrayed 10 years earlier. After a difficult start, they end up (FL, little sister and servant) finding refuge in the ML's family, frequented by "beauties" (suitors looking for a husband) and quite a few princes. Every lady is fighting to attract the favors of the ML, but the ML2 has not given up...

+++ Great actors (Alen Fang & Lin Yun as CL, with great chemistry) and a bunch of handsome actors, all magnificent and talented, who develop endearing characters. Even the psycho is very convincing! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)
+++ Lively direction, with superb effects and cinematography.
+++ Brotherhood and sisterhood well highlighted. Excellent choreography and fight scenes.
+++ Lively OSTs to accentuate the comedy aspect.

### At times the "comedy" tone is excessive.
### Some sides of the characters (aggressiveness of the FL, bickering, little sister's interventions) can be annoying.
### Some coincidences / clichés are too obvious (ML2 who survives, ML surviving drowning, avalanche, etc.)

=> To be savored as pure entertainment (very successful) full of handsome guys.
*************************************************************
Comédie romantique, historique, fun and light (Parfois un peu "roman Harlequin :)

+++ OSTs entrainantes pr accentuer l'aspect comédie.

I don't like the story much

This is a story about a girl and a boy who faced injustice in their childhood. The girl was separated from her parents, after that a tragedy occured, while the boy’s father was accused of treason.

When they grow up, both of them start investigating what went wrong with their parents. During this journey, they meet multiple times, and the boy believes that fate keeps bringing them together. Over time, he is the first to fall in love with her.

Before she met the boy , her foster parents arrange her marriage with another boy. She gets married but later runs away, leaving behind a note to apologize. However, the boy never forgets her and desperately searches for her.

Overall, if you have nothing else to watch, you can give this drama a try.
