I rarely watch chinese modern genre dramas,they're mostly unnecessarily long and boring.i rarely find them good. Costume dramas were hard to get into at first, but those genres, specially some older dramas are really great.

Haha You'll be shocked to know what a sensation this drama was back in 2015, the craze & popularity was insane. I'm sure whoever watches this drama nowadays will have somewhat similar opinion like you, (except the Acting part)...if you ask someone from that era or even Scroll this page down far enough, You'll see mostly positive comments from 9/10/11 years ago but as the years go by , All kind of criticisms took over :) Reminds me of a currently airing drama that's breaking all popularity records now, (same happened for 'My sunshine' back then, tbh if compared, FAR MORE than any current hits, I'm sure almost half of China watched this drama at that time,5 billion views in 20 days of airing & 10 billion views in total when their country's population was around 1.3 billion lol)..& if i'm not wrong, this was only the 2nd chinese drama in history to become internationally popular to audiences (to reach me as well haha)

The fact is, if the actual Quality of a show Isn’t really good, the hype won't age well :))

The synopsis does remind me of Korean Makjang dramas, those used to be Helpful for low BP too haha

For Chinese dramas, MDL Ratings are often a joke!

Fang Muyang didn’t disown his parents at that time & was sent to countryside as a punishment/ "educated youth settlement" for years, practically another Manual labor kinda thing /machinery works (ep 1 you'll see he's been working), Ling Yi was there as well...He did his works well for years so his superiors in the factory recommended University spot for him,Which he gave to Ling yi...so except Fang Mujing, everyone was 'exiled' and Fang family property was seized by govt. back then

yeah otherwise she would be exiled along with them, she couldn’t bear to lose her career bcz of her family, so she chose to cut ties with them....

As a cdrama watcher for 9 years, i highly suspect that ''popularity'' or "success" of POJ might be the starting point of doomed quality cdramas in near future. This takes me back to 3/4 years in the past when "Expansion of the Market" started to gradually decline the quality of kdramas. & look now where it is. I Agree with your take "the scent of commercial calculation" is everywhere. i dropped this drama at ep 16, & really happy to be the minority here, not being the target audience of this "visual appeal" lacking substance
