I was super biased against this show and have been putting off watching it because, let’s be honest, the ML Ash Zhu (Emperor Yan Jin) is not that good looking as compared to Dylan Wang, Zhang Ze Han, Simon Gong, etc. But seriously, after you get past episode 1 and just enjoy the show based on the plot and cinematography, You will binge watch this show until the last episode.
This is probably the most well written period drama in 24 eps that balances romances, hijinks, court politics, and character development and relationships. The story is predictable but the way the director tried earnestly to use unconventional shots and editing to pack in as much emotion as position per scene is so refreshing. It may be a low budget drama with mostly controlled tight shots but the director did try to deliver shots filled with double meanings. Reminded me a lot of the beautiful shots of Tang Dynasty tour but with less budget and fewer episode counts. And I also want to commend that though the villains were not that scary, they did their part but not in an illogical way. Also even if w shed a few tears near the end, the show did give us 3x happiness for romance and nice ending for some of the supporting characters.
So to those who want a period drama that is short but still has substance, do watch Oops, The King is in Love and you will love it.
PS. Don’t expect The Eternal Love level of chemistry. It’s more like a warm congee feeling with some kiss scenes.
The movie had budget, it was serviceable like some B movie you watch on your downtime on iQiyi. The girl was giving me Son Hye Jin/Han Seri in CLOY vibes.
Jdrama is trully superior to Kdrama and Cdrama in terms of short episode count dramas (6-10eps)! Horimiya may be short but there were no filler scenes and you don’t need to speed up the episodes due to boredom! I love the casting, perfect Hori and Miyamura. Even Tooru and Yuki are adorbs. Every single one of the characters are so adorable. Even the previous middle school bully except for that one minor dude who seemed to never changed for the better.
This was only 12 episodes long, might be more romantic in season 2? I haven't watched it yet, does the ending make…
I’m used to iQiyi series being split into different seasons like my fantastic mrs right so yes there’s probably a season 2. But the problem with this drama is the gap between the s1 and s2 is almost 2 years and the ending and romantic build up for s1 is not worth waiting for s2. At least in MFMR you get invested in the OTP but, here it’s meh. Better wait for s2 with 24eps. But no news yet if it already started or when it will be released. I doubt it will be soon because iQiyi have better rating and more popular series in the pipeline than this.
This drama has the ingredients for an addicting drama: 1) perfect cast specially Kevin Xiao as Xiu Ran with his cat-like face and Tian Xi Wei as Mint with her refreshing character, 2) good chemistry between the ML and FL with their banters and cute interaction, 3) beautiful cinematography and decent budget for the production, 4) unexpected plot twist, and 5) short 16 eps and good ending.
But somehow it still failed to hook me like how Eternal Love Rain and My Fantastic Mr. Right both of which are in the same animal transformation genre. ELR and MFMR have smaller budget but more episode count were able to deliver the right amount of sweetness and angst to make us want to binge watch on them. Be My Cat on the other hand might be too sweet and lacks that emotional depth and angst to actually make us feel that loss specially on the climax of the drama.
I’d also like to point out that the producers of this drama are also the producers for Well Intended Love so I think their work is meant for more episode counts or for modern times. Also the Director is the one who directed The Eternal Love 2 so we do have the gorgeous scenes. The screenwriter also wrote the script for Romance of Hua Rong, so we have great main lead characters. I think the main problem is that the whole production is limited by the 16 episode counts so the story felt way too rushed and they just don’t have the proper skills to make condensed 16 episode dramas like the ir South Korean counterparts.
Well Chengcheng was 18 when they filmed this drama I think
He’s from an idol competition where Cheng Xiao was one of the mentors and he’s also the brother of Chinese Alist actress Fan Bingbing so he’s got connections.
Is this a good drama? Oh should I watch this drama?
This is a boring drama at first but when you get to ep 6/7 you’ll know if you’ll stay to binge watch or not. I was also surprised I liked this drama even if there’s very little skinship between Cheng Xiao and Fan Chengcheng but I love their chemistry.
Can I have a reveal spoiler of the last ep. because I want to know if it will be a sad ending or a happy ending?
Open ending. FL “dies” with the chance of reincarnation and ML goes on his journey to achieve his maximum potential. Open for season 2 but highly unlikely given that though this drama had good reviews, it’s not that spectacular.
Why Chinese writers like open endings so much? wtf is so good about open ending?! It's not like their stories…
I think they want to give them the option of creating a sequel in case they have spectacular ratings, hence the open ending. Also there are a lot of side plots in source material for this drama (anime and novel) that was not shown in the drama so they can do a sequel from that.
I love this drama because the chemistry with Jade Cheng and Simon Gong is so good and they are also not averse…
That Jing came out of the game after she got her happy ending. Like how you will log off a game after you’ve done the main quest and your contented with finishing the side quests. And the other MLs in the modern world don’t know her except CEO Wu Mei and purely coincidental. Wu Mei knows her because he probably entered the XR game too as a hard core/hard working CEO of the game. So yes they just continued their romance in the real world.
I love this drama because the chemistry with Jade Cheng and Simon Gong is so good and they are also not averse to skinship. To compare the 2 seasons, I liked the pacing of season 1 and not so much S2 because there were draggy scenes that I just skipped specially the villain scenes. But yiu do need to watch S2 to get the happy ending. And IMHO, I think the ending meant...
do I need to watch the first Unique lady to watch 2? I remember I started it a long while ago and it felt like…
You need to watch S1 (part 1 & 2 = 24) to get more sense out of the relationship of the FL with her Female leads. And I found the pacing of S1 to be better than 2 but S2 has the ending that resolves everything.
I’m almost finished with this drama and this is a drama that doesn’t force you to binge watch it. It’s something that you can go back to when you’re bored and continue watching. I liked the first half because it was had more scenes with the ML and FL but the latter half got too draggy.
I also would like to comment that that specific event in the later half is becoming a Cdrama trope that I’m beginning to hate. I remember seeing this scene/dilemna in 4 dramas now and dang can’t the writers come up with problems not involving harem shiz? WoF thankfully missed this trope, and Tang Dynasty Tour just gave the worst iteration of this. But you have to give it to My Heroic Husband for keeping the characters reactions and decisions more realistic and in character. This might be the best solution/outcome for this trope with the FL knowing the plan rather than the 2nd FL. It’s not as painful as what happened in TDT.
No relation. Some actors/actresses are the same, thats it.
Thank you! I’m a few minutes in and I must say that the cinematography for this drama is so good, reminds me of the old epic movies set in ancient China like The Myth, the Forbidden Kingdom, Painted Skin, or in dramaverse Tang Dynasty Tour. The shots are so artsy that I’m curious if how much budget they have and if it will actually match the romcom vibe that was “requested” in the beginning.
Anyone who watched the latest episodes & Joy of Life, do we need to watch JOL to get the story of this drama? Is the story related? Or it’s more like fan service where the JoL actors are “recycled”/ make a cameo in this drama?
I’m planning on watching this on iQiyi now, but if i have to watch JoL first, I might drop it. I didn’t find the ML & FL in JoL pleasing to my eyes so I dropped it.
You know this would be a honest to goodness BL drama when the main 2 actors are so handsome (Zhang Ze Han & Simon Gong) while the other female supporting characters are unforgettable. Lol. Not my cup of tea but from the trailer ZZH & SG are killing their roles. Now I wonder if the Omyouji with Deng Lun and Mark Chao is also supposed to be BL because they are both hot actors.
Also surprised that this only has 36 eps given that ZZH & SG are Cdrama wuxia staples. I was expecting 40+ eps to milk their star power.
I finally finished this drama and I must say that it’s so fluffy and uncomplicated, focusing more on romance and family dynamics. Some might find it boring given that most ancient cdramas like this have some political plot almost every episode and a different villain every other arc. But I personally like how Oh My Sweet Liar OMSL panned out because the FL was not excessively “tortured” for weird reasons like in You Are My Destiny or TROTAR, and the villains were irritating enough for their deviousness but not to the point that we lost key characters that we cared about.
I also personally love the chemistry between Xia Ning Jun (Hongbin) and Xi Zi (Xi Ruo) even though they took like half of the show to fully reveal their feelings for each other. The chemistry between the support cast was also great between the side romantic couples, and also between the Li Family and the Yunhao Art Pavillion.
Lastly, I’m just happy that even if the ensemble cast are not A listers, Huace Entertainment still gave this drama great cinematography, set design, costume design, and OST/BG similar to their other recent drama A Love So Romantic.
So please give this drama a chance. Just watch it at 1.5x speed and do speed reading of the English sub. It might not be as fast paced as other dramas but it’s worth the watch if you’re looking for something light and sweet.
