I hate to say it but that’s how he treated her in the first half - often ignoring her and putting obstacles in her way. And she did try to go see him but was told not to come around again. Yes she should try harder but I am giving her the benefit of the doubt that she is emotionally exhausted and not thinking right. And, Her career ( how she supports herself) is crashing with evil, colleagues going after her. If her parents knew how she’s been treated, they’d ask her to give up on Shi Yan.

I’m not sure Shi Yan liked her from the beginning. He is intrigued by her writing abilities and wanted her to do his interview even when he has never met her or knew how she looked. Then he was really mean to her maybe knowing she had an ulterior motive for pursuing him as he did ask her about that. Or, Perhaps he was mean to her because of his unwilling attraction to her and he just’ knew ‘ how to deal with the likes (gold diggers) like her.

I read in China, there are more men than women due to the 1 child policy and males being preferred. So maybe in China, for men, you snooze, you lose when it comes to pursuing a female partner, right or not…

Yi Yang did say he will continue to pursue her even though she has a boyfriend and had rejected him. And Shi Yan was so confident in saying she is free to choose others or something like that. Though I agree Shu Yi should have followed her instincts and come clean early on, Shi Yan is not exactly the easy going type. He is quite formidable and is so moody, so it’s not surprising for Shu Yi to step carefully and ask for advice.

Shu Yi didn’t accept Yang Yi attention willingly. He told her he was going to take her somewhere for work inspiration and you see her going unhappily. Comes a point when. in order to feel less dead, one might have to do something to relieve the crappiness. She didn’t go with him to be romantically involved. She can have man friends.

Goblin is a good description of Shi Yan though he is improving probably because of Shu Yi. And there I thought I was the only one who thought She Yi cute and likable. Glad you feel the same. Shu Yi is clueless because she has been pursued all her life. Even given free food by delivery man. LOL. Maybe that’s why she is attracted to Shi Yan. She has to do the chasing which is a first for her. Both have been privileged in different ways and levels.

Yes, I think his pride is hurt more than anything and he wants her to grovel. He didn’t even give her a chance to explain. I also want him to grovel for all the curtness, insensitivity and moodiness he showed her in the beginning.

Yes, I agree with you. There is an underlying double standard regarding work being more important for the man vs woman. He can forget about her while working (he’s better in later episodes) but she is seen as work obsessed. She is still single and have career aspirations and it’s her work that supports her. He’s not said anything about being together forever…. It’s a mistake to rely on a man alone. A person is in charge of her or his own life. But I do agree there are times she talked about work at the wrong time - like when they were making wishes while watching fireworks but it would be more brazen to wish for a lifetime together when he has not said anything yet. Work is important for both of them and I feel Shi Yan wasn’t considerate towards She Yi as much as he should. He was really mean to her at first. Compare his behavior to Yang Yi’s who is better boyfriend material.

Wow. Interesting. I have the opposite reaction. If Yi Yang and Shi Yan appeared at the same time, I’d choose Yi Yang over Shi Yang for a boyfriend. So I want Shi Yan to be jealous of Yi Yang and to really think about what it means to lose her. But I am too invested in Shi Yan (always liked Dylan Wang)to give up on him. He deserves not to be lonely. Obviously, She Yu brought light into his colorless life. To me, he was quite unlikeable at the beginning. I think he is now too angry to feel anything else. Yi Yang’s temperament is more like Shu Yu’s - sunny disposition, opptimistic, assertive, persistent and willing to bend over backwards for Shu Yu. Shi Yan is moody, not expressive and curt ( even to his niece) and have baggage ( failed relationship with ex?). Maybe even emotionally stunted, naturally suspicious of women chasing him. I don’t think he even liked She Yu at first and thought her shameless and brazen. He was Born rich, so expects people to cater to him. So it’s always Shu Yu chasing after him. Yes, he started caring for her but not enough as his girlfriend. He won’t even let her explain. Yes, she had ulterior motive chasing after Shi Yan initially but fell for him instead. She didn’t even flaunt their relationship with her ex and homewrecker which showed she already gave up on revenge on them. Shi Yan suspected she had ulterior motives in approaching him but said to himself , in one of the episodes, he’d forgive her if she stays by his side but when the truth was revealed his pride was so hurt, he can’t take it.

Yes, I agree, she should have done more to see him but she is suffering from depression and after 2 devastating breakups within months, her judgement is gone and she was grasping at the kindness Yi Yang is showing her. I feel sorry for both of them.

Shu Yi is depressed. She could not get out of bed for several days at her parents house until Yi Yang came to her house. I would think her judgement is way off after suffering 2 breakups in a matter of months. Anyone would be devastated after 1 breakup let alone 2. I’ve seen people going through breakups. They were like walking zombies. Granted, the first one was a god send but just as hurtful. Also, Yi Yang is very persistent and willing to treat her well. To me, Shi Yan did not initially treat her well. For example, their first horse ride was brutal where she was frightened and bruised. I was quite shocked how curt and insensitive Shi Yan was. He is not good at coaxing or being nice to her and is always pleasantly surprised after ‘testing’ her. Shi Yan has his own baggage ( due to his ex) and being so wealthy, he’s been catered to all his life and is naturally suspicious of why women want a relationship with him.

Yi Yang and Shi Yan’s responses to Shu Yi are so different. Yi Yang is willing to do anything for Shu Yi but Shu Yi is always the one running after Shi Yan who is always so insensitive and curt towards her. Yes, he secretly helped her but no one is a mind reader. I thought at first he was incapable of warmth. He is not good at expressing himself. As his niece explains, people can get tired of always being the proactive one.

I didn’t like him at first, but in the later episodes, he is shown to be honest , righteous, and willing to support Niao Naio and LBY.

I agree on many of your points; however, I was so happy to see the emperor, consort Yu and LBY in his red and white robes arriving at the Cheng Manor for the engagement party. I almost jumped up shouting. It was clear that Princess Ruyang was there to cause trouble and the empress arrived just in time but she was still no match for the old princess. This way, the old princess was sent to the Temple and out of the picture I hope. Her long suffering husband no longer has to pretend to be a Daoist. He was SO funny. And, LBY’s step mother’s confined to her house never to enter the palace without being summoned.

I will have to rewatch ep 35 to see why you said CSS handed the empress and crown prince to be cooked alive. Perhaps you can expend on that? If I remember correctly ( ok. I admit, my memory is not the best), CSS unknowingly undid LBY’s scheme to rid the court of Wang Lin’s father and brother when she told the crown prince to meet with the emperor to spare the Wang’s. LBY supports the 3rd prince for the position of crown prince but CSS does not know this yet. The whole thing showed how weak and inappropriate the crown prince is for his position. Though LBY told him more than once that his uncle is incompetent, he still wanted to keep him in his post just because he is his uncle. And to lose the tiger tally which mobilizes the army is just incompetent and deserving of demotion. And the crown prince’s aunt is so vicious towards the empress. The way she talks to the empress is so inappropriate but the empress allows that kind of behavior. The empress and the crown prince are too kind for their own good, especially in a court with people full of ulterior motives.
