Honestly, the show is so much better than the book. There’s a lot of content that was incoherent such as the Lingbi sect and Cangcang’s acceptance of the marriage that they’ve made coherent. They also made Cangcang’s dad’s storyline more complete. And it seems they will fill out Du Tingxin’s storyline as well. The scheming and mind games were only hinted at in the book and sometimes didn’t make sense but it seems they’ve cleaned them up as well.

One thing I also appreciate is that I feel the story is balancing the complication of the relationship well. It shows that many of their more hurtful actions are often influenced by the outside world but deep down they still love each other. For me, it has the feeling of the book. I feel Cangcang’s sadness and understand her lashing out and at the same time I understand Xiao Huan’s helplessness but also see his overprotective nature and his desire to let her be as free as she can be within this.

That’s not being naive that’s being kept in the dark. 😅Remember she doesn’t have backing in the harem nor is she long established so she can’t use those avenues. It also seems she’s been separated from her Fenglai Pavilion contacts by entering the palace. That only leaves Xiao Huan and her family who are definitely going to lie to her.

Yeah, it’s super weird that people want her to turn on her family so easily. Xiao Huan also lied to her from the start so it’ll be even harder for her to believe him over her family.

It’s always sold itself as a melodrama.

Meh, I haven’t cared about MDL ratings in years. MDL has a certain formula it likes and MDL ratings basically have no meaning in China. I only care about the heat index, Douban score, and playback volume.
There’s also two directors and it seems they have filmed different parts.

I heard some of the more recent Huanrui dramas were going for a throwback feeling. They want people to feel a bit like they’re watching an older drama.

The misogyny has gotten really bad in the last few years and I don’t get why. Some spaces are absolutely toxic. Hopefully this space won’t get that bad.
It’s wild that people are criticising Cangcang when she’s literally fighting alongside the male lead.

Me too. Like the original book has a terrible plot (the drama is way better) but Cang and Xiao Huan are really good characters and have a really good dynamic. I don’t know if the drama will have it but I really hope they have the arrow scene and the scene under the tree where they re-introduce themselves.

The actual novel isn’t that similar other than the master part. I don’t think this show is that similar either but gets equated with GMP because of the actress and red flag ML. The hidden identity storyline has a different motivation. The master part has a different motivation. The main characters even feel different, though the FL uses the same voice actress.

It seems a lot of the new shows have warp speed intros because they’re afraid of losing viewers. They’re competing with the pacing of short dramas I guess.

True which is why I always treasure the carefree period of these types of characters. The “growing up” that people demand often has steep costs for this type of FL.

The setting might be off because not all of it was filmed on location but indoors with green screen and then the background added in. And for camera work, there’s two directors. I feel like one is definitely better than the other at shooting people but I don’t which one that is.

She is so pretty. I’m glad they reduced the filter on her. I think it makes her looks stand out more. Plus one of the directors is really good at filming her. The scene when she wakes up from her dream in episode 4 is super beautiful.

Yeah, I like character development too. And one of the biggest highlights of the book was watching Cangcang and Xiao Huan learn how to build a relationship despite the cruel environment of the court.

Yup. It’s also honestly wild that people think the FL should get married when she doesn’t want to just because the ML wants to.

Right? And it’s obvious that her family is going through great lengths to keep things from her too.

After watching all 4 episodes, I like it. I think it has a good mix of everything- romance, martial arts, tragedy, politics, and humor- without taking itself too seriously or becoming muddled up. It’s a soap opera so I don’t expect Oscar level work.

I also think it’s really easy to see the differences in style between the directors. Once the story returns to the palace is probably one of the best scenes for this. It feels completely different in visuals and tone from the jianghu.

I like the whole cast so far. PXR and RJL play really well off each other as RJL has domineering energy while Xiao Ran has a defiant energy.
