This scene never happened in the novel. Novel Lu Yan did a much better job at hiding Shen Zhen from his mother and the rest of the world. He even used one of the famous courtesans in town as a cover whenever he visited her at his secondary residence. The idea that he would hide the daughter of a criminal in the main family residence like he does in the drama is quite absurd and unworthy of his shrewd and careful character.
I watched the first three episodes but I can make neither heads nor tails from it. The editing is simply terrible. The way the story keeps jumping between present, past and dreams is very confusing. Some more explanatory subtitles regarding characters/locations would have been helpful.

I agree. In the novel things are revealed bit by bit which makes it much more interesting. I think putting all the focus on the main couple in the early episode and bringing them together too early took a lot of the suspense away so that they then had to come up with these annoying and artificial obstacles.

So here it goes: Li Di is from a poor family in the countryside and came to the capital for the imperial examination. He happened to be present (not really by accident, as we later find out) when Shen Ran fell into the water during a walk with all the noble ladies of the town. After that he kept camping in front of the Shen Mansion professing his undying love. Initially Shen Ran wasn’t really interested, but he was very persistent, not too bad looking, either. She eventually agreed to marry him because she thought that with someone who is so passionately in love with her she would have a good life. .in fact this whole marriage was a set-up from the start because the person behind it all was plotting to ruin the three daughters of the Shen household to stop Shen Wenqi from marrying his daughters to the son’s of other powerful households. This would have made him a very powerful minister. So for the eldest there was a student from a poor family, the second was suggested for a political marriage to some foreign Prince and the third, Shen Zhen, was supposed to be married to Xu Wei as one of his concubines.

Novels sometimes give very detailed descriptions but as soon as the scriptwriters see it it gets all cut. They seem to think we’re too dumb to understand.🙄 Decoctions of herbs actually are cooked for hours ( the general rule is to reduce the liquid by half ) and they are very bitter because if they are wound medicine they usually contain boswellia, myrrh or peony roots. I’ve had a fair share of these preparations and I feel their pain every time one of the characters has to drink this 😂
